Normally those Nut Latches should completely close.
With everything done to that instrument it is likely those are not the original lock wedges, or they were installed backwards or upside down.
Either way, those black nut wedge latches should be completely flush when closed.
See if you can find the correct lock wedges and give it another try (checking tuning stability).

    • @ianfurqueron5850
      @ianfurqueron5850 Před rokem +3

Yep. I used these string locks on my Les Paul back when they were new, hoping for something easier to use than the 6 grub screw string lock that was installed at the factory on my Kahler equipped guitar. I found it to work OK, but I eventually removed it when I discovered locking tuners. I mostly found the clamp to not grip well on the G string due to the thickness of the D string. In hindsight, one might be able to cut a light groove into the clamp for the D and thus make the effective clamping force more even.

Anyone who actually spends their money on that is doing so knowing full well that they're getting a piece of paper as a gag gift for their brother-in-law or whatever. Absolutely nobody with a mind competent enough to get themselves dressed in the morning would see the ads for them and think "Oh, I am actually owning property that I can make any use of" or would legitimately call themselves "Lord." I sold one of these a couple of months ago in the Metallic Sunset colour. The clearcoat had yellowed so it developed a nice copper hue! It had extremely stable tuning, if you use the string clamps correctly but they take a little bit of setting up to get the right tension and it's quite easy to pass the string through the wring place so it's not properly between the clamps. I sold it as despite it being a well-made instrument, and loving the quirkiness of the unique features, it was uninspiring to me to play. Quite dark sounding and without the 'snap' that I associate with other SGs I've had in the past that I've liked. Also, the singer of the band I was planning to use it with sadly passed away suddenly so I no longer had the use for it.

The TP6 came in handy for me one night gigging in Walt Disney Orlando on the west end outdoor pro stage.
The 200 plus hot stage lights affected my neck and when I want for a D chord the G-B-E strings went out even though I string at the post via the "Gibson Mandolin String Post Method", stretched, greased the nut slots and tested for tuning stability before I stormed the stage.🤣
Thank God I use to practice detuning and quickly tuning with the TP6. Saved me ass. I keep one in the glove box for good luck.🤪

  • @neilwarden

You are correct on the lock nut, they don't really clamp the strings hard enough. They were made by Kahler, I had one on a custom build neck thru' super Strat with a Kahler Trem'. This was around '83/84 when deep diving trems were just in their infancy. I replaced the 'pop up' clamping nut back to the Kahler standard locking nut as I bent the main through post (axle) by over tightening, trying basically to get the guitar to stay in tune. Sometimes it was clamped so hard it would hurt your fingers. Can't see the point of it on this SG or at all.

I like that SG, I have mid eighties MIJ Charvel Charvette that is quite similar to that SG. it's white and it has yellowed slightly over the years. to this really cool color that can't be duplicated by unnatural ageing processes. there are some that would say it's antique white but it's not. I have seen antique white finishes and it's not the same. and it's one of the reasons why I have no use for relic guitars. the Charvel Charvette that I have has a real Floyd Rose that has the big brass block, and a Floyd Rose locking nut. and it stays in perfect tune even if it's sitting for a while, providing the strings stretched out properly. and that's probably due to the Floyd Rose locking nut. because I don't think I would rely on the gotoh tuning machines to do that. it has EMG pickups (none passive) a humbucker at the bridge, and a angled single coil at the neck. with no pickguard and it has a really skinny neck. I think I would like that SG without the pickguard also. but it would probably be impossible to get rid of that discoloration. which I think is caused by smoke and other environmental impacts. and it stayed those areas because they don't get cleaned and polished in those areas. in the playing demo it sounded really good when you played the Kansas "Dust in the Wind" riff. however it didn't sound quite as good when you played the AC/DC riff, and when it had dirt on it. I think I would consider messing around with that nut some more. it also might explain why the pickups had been changed. it's definitely a nice SG and has serious potential.

I love SG’s and I particularly favor the white ones as well, then that gorgeous ebony board to just put the icing on the cake. I’d love it 🤙
In 2017 Gibson made a run of exclusives for Sam Ash Music, I own one. They came in Arctic White and the smaller pick guard too, however sadly no Ebony board or real Mother of toilet seat inlays ahah! It’s a fantastic guitar though and the rosewood board is very dark ( these also came with the standard trapezoid plastic in lays ). It also came with the standard Nashville bridge and Stop Bar tail of course too.
I’m pretty sure outside of going custom shop on the later models those were the only ‘affordable Standards’ you could find in white. The neck on the 2017 Sam Ash one is also thinner almost feeling like the Ibanez U necks but not quite as drastic with a tad bit larger shoulder.
Anyway, I love your channel Austin… it’s my morning ritual along with my cup of coffee each and every morning 🤙

My favorite sg is 2 pickup, white with gold hardware.

Solder joints can be easily cleaned up to look original again. Not big deal.

I like sg standards in burgundy or black that's it but being a les Paul player they are real uncomfortable to play because the necks are longer so its changes my playing position

It would appear it’s not actually a locking nut but a device to achieve straight string pull through the nut.

Maybe it could be used that way, but it certainly “can” lock it down if it wants to

Trog, saw a hot rod red Gibson electric single pick up guitar, not a SG , solid body with the banana head stock in a glass case at the Nashville Airport. A real beauty! Help me out here, thanks!

I really like that white SG. I was ever to buy an SG, that would be the one. It really speaks to me.

Surprised you didn't try to find the Sunset Finish to document and deno. I almost scored an SG Elite in Sunset Metallic a few years ago on eBay for around 1,600 but I didn't win the auction as my internet was acting up the last minute. I was so mad but hey that's life.

My god, this is my guitar, well was my guitar, I sold it back in 2019 and then the guy I sold it too sold it again on reverb and I Almost bought it back, was wondering where it ended it up cause I want it back, I’m the guy that bought from you the Gibson Mod Shop Les Paul Custom gold sparkle SilverBurst last year ….. is this guitar available? I want her back ….and I know it’s her cause of that ding on the back of the guitar close to the control cavity and the chainsaw case is missing a latch….

  • @jeromestevenfaigin6059

The only SG I ever liked was the one with a maple top. But, even today I don't like them. They look like the bat-man logo built as a custom job and I'm not impressed!

What do you know. Gibson actually made an SG speced exactly as I would want one. I’m a big fan of ebony fretboards and love the coil splitting. I prefer an SG with the smaller pick guard and love the white color. Who knows, might need to check one out if I can find one for a reasonable price. Reasonably priced Gibson is an oxymoron unfortunately.
