- Shuhada' Sadaqat (8 December 1966 - July 2023), known professionally as Sinéad O'Connor, was an Irish singer, songwriter and political activist. Her debut studio album, The Lion and the Cobra, was released in 1987 and charted internationally. Her second studio album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got (1990), became her biggest success, selling over seven million copies worldwide. Its lead single, "Nothing Compares 2 U", was named the number-one world single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards.
O'Connor released ten studio albums. Am I Not Your Girl? (1992) and Universal Mother (1994) were certified gold in the UK, Faith and Courage (2000) was certified gold in Australia, and Throw Down Your Arms (2005) went gold in Ireland. Her work included songs for films, collaborations with many other artists, and appearances at charity fundraising concerts. Her 2021 memoir Rememberings was a bestseller.
In 1999,Sinead was ordained as a priest by the Irish Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church, an Independent Catholic sect that is not recognised by the Roman Catholic Church.She consistently spoke out on issues related to child abuse (including her 1992 Saturday Night Live performance), human rights, racism, organised religion, and women's rights. Throughout her music career, she spoke about her spiritual journey, activism, socio-political views, as well as her trauma and mental health struggles. In 2017, O'Connor changed her name to Magda Davitt. After converting to Islam in 2018 she changed it to Shuhada' Sadaqat,but continued to record and perform under her birth name.
Sineads home in Bray
There have been calls among many Bray residents for a permanent tribute at - if not the preservation of - the former home of the late Sinéad O’Connor, despite the fact the private owner of the seafront property is waiting on a decision from An Bord Pleanála to convert the Victorian house into apartments.
BBA Architecture, on behalf of Rachel Carthy, lodged a planning application with Wicklow County Council in May last year, but the council refused permission on grounds that it would be out of character with the streetscape and would intrude on views of the protected structures in the vicinity of the site.
The singer bought the six-bed house, named ‘Montebello’ in 2007. It’s located on the Strand Road along Bray’s seafront and was sold in 2021 for €1,040,000.
Sinéad had put her own stamp on the property, which had given it a unique status on the seafront, the stand-out being the choice of bright red, yellow and green paint to boost the quoin stones on the double-fronted house, built in the 1860s.
In fact, one Bray local had posted in a tribute how they always remembered “passing her house with the lovely coloured bricks”.
While there have been suggestions ranging from “buy the house and set up a music foundation there in her name”, to memorials, murals and plaques, the fact remains that the home is in private ownership and an appeal has now been lodged to gain permission to convert the building into five apartments.

A lot of people have been coming forward with stories of Sinead saying she would pay for fans and neighbour's medical bills and counseling. She was such a sensitive and kind woman. If only she could have been kinder to herself. Rest well Sinead. 😢❤

Thank you to yee, iv heard loads of stories about how good she was to people, i heard one story from back in 1992, where she went to meet a 20 year old girl(with terminal cancer) who was a massive fan and brought her to london for a week, took her to a gig, took her to parties and so on, really spoilt her well and sinead didn't do it for any other reason than to just be her lovely self, no publicity or anything. Mental illness can do that to a person. It's really terrible when you don't have a support system. I understand the situation better than most. I empathize with her, I'm still healing from depression,PTSD, anxiety,and panic attacks. I'm blessed to have a very small support system.

Sue, this was beautiful. It has brought tears to my eyes. I just think of her beautiful face in the video "Nothing compares 2 U" and I can't help but think of her mother abusing her--she would have been such a beautiful little girl. It's incomprehensible. She never deserved that. That abuse changed her life completely. I'm sure she suffered with PTSD. So sad. Thank you for leaving the flowers and taking us there.
