      I have a friend pigeon he knows what time I feed him
      And he waits on my neighbours house and then flys down to the small wall
      I place the seeds I use pointing to communicate and let him know
      That it is okay for him to eat the seeds
      And he seems to understand it honestly he has his own. Personality

      One walked along the wall of the garden where I used to live and the way he lifted his little feet up was quite endearing and I made a 'doo be doo be doo' noise in a silly voice to try to describe the manner in which he walked. I've got one that visits my garden now. He'll be after my raspberries soon but I'll just let him have them. He jumped into my raspberry bush when we were sat right next to the raspberries! So cheeky! He got paranoid about me watching him from the kitchen so he flew off or maybe he didn't like a particular clattering noise. I was trying to be quiet. Think he was looking for seeds.

    When I first moved to the UK, I saw one of these birds in my back garden. Me, being the american iɗiσṭ that I am, saw the unique markings and thought it was an escaped pet pigeon. So I grabbed some bird food and tried to coax it in, not understanding why it acted so scared, completely oblivious to the fact that I was terrorizing a wild animal.
    It flew off, and I was devastated....only to find a whole flock of them hanging out in a tree the next day.

    I like the wood pigeon, they seem allot cleaner then feral pigeons and don't shit everywhere.
    They are also polite when they visit your garden and don't hang around once food is unavailable.

    Any tips to prevent wood pigeons destroying my planted borders?
    I have two feeders in a 5 year old hawthorn tree which was trouble free until the local wood pigeons discovered the feeders and now upto seven at a time come during the mornings and have broken my ferns and climbed in several bushes which has broken them or stunted their growth.
    I used a tray on the feeders to stop the seed falling to the ground but the pigeons discovered how to perch on the trays or feeder perches to steal the seed whilst flapping about attempting to gain balance.
    I’ve changed the feeders, moved the feeders to no avail. My artificial lawn laid last year is along with my flower borders being ruined by these nuisance pigeons to such an extent I am seriously considering stopping feeding the birds altogether.
    I am at my wits end as I enjoy feeding the wild birds but it cannot be at the detriment of my garden and daily clean up of pigeon muck and damaged plants due to these pigeons bickering over fallen seed!
    Any suggestions other than shooting them is greatly appreciated!

    • @aimeedesign
      @aimeedesign Před 2 lety +1

      There are some seeds such as sunflower hearts wood pigeons can't stand. Also, they hate suet. So maybe you could place only sunflower hearts and suet flakes in the bird feeder? That way the wood pigeons would no longer be interested!

    • @666DW
      @666DW Před 2 lety

      believe it or not I use a 50% sunflower heart mix as it is a very nutritious seed for wild birds, along with dried mealworms, calci worms, peanut granules, suet pellets and a small selection of crushed oats and other 5% seeds, but these pigeons hoover anything that falls to the ground!🤯
      I have tied with the idea of just sunflower seeds in the past to stop any seeds growing in the borders but thought it’s nice the birds get a variety of seeds to eat.
      Thanks for your comments but I just don’t think sunflower hearts on their own will stop these ‘very well fed’ wood pigeons, but I will try!

      I've seen bird tables on the market with very low roofs to stop larger birds like pigeons getting to the food. I wonder if one of these might contain the spillage better than a feeder but still enable smaller birds to get to the food.

    I just love wood pigeons. I'm in North East Scotland and I go for a walk every morning around 7:30. And these guys are everywhere. It was mentioned in the video that they do five 'coos'. Well, the ones in my area do three and a half. In other words, the fourth coo is halved in length.

    Woody 1., is a regular visitor to my garden, sits on fence waiting..... swoops down to feed when i set it out... All was well for several weeks when a second bird arrived and for a few momenents they fed together, But all of a sudden Woody 2, attacked 1, by peckijng and then chasing away ,then to replace Woody1. at the feed table. NOW woody 2 waits for Woody i to arrive and then chasues away and not allow Wooddy !". to feed. This happens every day inthe same pattern.... WHY IS THIS ? CAN ANY ONE EXPLAIN THIS BEHAVIOURB PLEASE .Woody now cannot feed due to this attack. THANK YOU.... SASn.
