- Undefeated two-time world champion David “El Monstro” Benavidez didn’t miss a beat in his 175-pound debut, soundly outboxing and out-slugging former world champion Oleksandr “The Nail” Gvozdyk to win a 12-round unanimous decision (116-112, 117-111, 119-109) and the Interim WBC Light Heavyweight World Title.
"I went up in weight, won every single round and dominated a former world champion and an Olympian as well,” said Benavidez.
"I had him hurt a couple of times. I wasn't throwing a lot of combinations because I reinjured my hand in the third round. I tore my right ligament four weeks before the fight and I hurt my left hand in camp. I'm proud of myself because I also got a cut three weeks ago and I pushed through and gave the fans a good fight.”
Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) displayed every skill in the book, using a snapping jab to work his way in and unload to the head and body with accurate combinations. Gvozdyk, in his first world title bout since 2019, didn’t go quietly. The Kharkiv, Ukraine product threw punches in bunches, often sneaking in a right hand behind his quick left.
"I obviously wish we got a different decision tonight. I wish I had done a little more and been more active in the early rounds of the fight,” said Gvozdyk.
"I think the scores were pretty accurate. It was a good fight, a close fight. He was better in the first half of the fight, but I think I started doing better in the second half. I'd love a rematch with him."
Benavidez hurt Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KOs) several times during the second half of the fight but wasn’t able to put his tough opponent away in what was a dominant performance.
“I'm looking forward to what's next in the division," said Benavidez.

Just because Benavidez faded at the end of the fight people acting like Benavidez is no good. It's obvious he came out fast to start this fight trying to make a statement at 175 and get a knockout, and he didn't pace himself properly. It's no surprise he gassed at the end. Lesson learned for him. Some of yall are focusing so much on how he looked at the end of the fight and forget what he did to start the fight. over the first 6 rounds he was landing an average of 46% of his punches, with like over 50 or 60 body punches landed. He was doing great work.
I also don't think Benavidez built himself up physically for 175 yet. He always planned to come back to 168 to fight Canelo (let's see if that happens) I think next time we see him at 175 he will be better

If anything Munguia is a way worse Benavidez, Benavidez has simple yet solid defense meanwhile Munguia defense doesnt exist, and all I saw in that fight was Canelo getting connected with more heavy shots than in any of his recent fights and him not being able to stop someone who standed static in front of him the whole second half of the fight.

David's grown up a lot...he looks and sounds great.
Everyone keeps talking about David's power not translating well and him not being able to hurt dude, but power alone doesn't win fights.
David showed way better defensive responses. Slipping and using a lot more head movement and not just throwing up a high guard. Staying in front of his opponent, cutting them off well. He just looked like a more improved and patient boxer.
Gvozdyk looked ripped as hell as was obviously the bigger man imo. It's not surprise he took those punches in that shape

After watching again, he looked very impressive besides gassing towards the end. Only thing I feel like he needs to work on is loading up on shots when he’s out of range. Bivol n Beterbiev will take advantage of that.
If he eliminates those small mistakes I feel like he could beat both of them.
Just has to tighten up more but he’s consistently improving every fight.

Like Canelo, i feel like Benavidez is tough enough to handle the punching power of fighters like Gvozdyk and Bivol. But both Canelo and Benavidez lack the power to K.O. at that weight and also get tired faster from not being used to carrying that much weight around. Nonetheless, they can give good performances and even take some wins like in this fight.

First fight up a weight class and he outboxes a hard hitting former champion, who lets not forget put one of the hardest hitting light heavyweights in a coma to become champion. Great win for Benavidez. Excited to see him again at 175 once he has got used to that weight class better.

I watched this fight in its entirety twice. DB won every round and beat Gvordyk convincingly. Those of you who say DB has no power at 175, ask Gvordyk if DB has power or not.
Have any of you nay sayers ever been hit in the liver by DB? I dare anyone of you to step into the ring with DB at a 175 pounds and take body shots for just one round and then you can tell me if DB has power or not, that's if any of you can even survive for just one round.
If anyone wants to talk about punching power, Gvordyk didn't show any punching power at all, in any round.
Just because DB didn't knock him down or out or give Gvordyk the beating of his life doesn't mean he can't compete at 175. Benavidez won by Unanimous Decision and rightfully so. He earned it.

Although it wasn’t the fight I was expecting, David as usual came forward and forced the fight while also displaying great combinations. I think if David can secure the Canelo fight his biggest asset at 168 imo is his gas tank. Canelo still has the power but I’ve noticed that he does tend to slow down due to his age. I think that’s what makes the fight so intriguing because David takes a lot of risk and makes mistakes which leaves a lot of opportunity for canelo especially towards the body. I hope they can come to an agreement because It’s gonna be a BANGER
This is a great starting point for David Benavidez in this weight class I don’t think he should fight Bivol or Beterbiev yet he should work his way up with other quality opponents and hit the weight room so the power can carry over better

BENAVIDEZ vs GVOZDYK show that Benavidez has improved a lot: hand speed, power fits, and footwork.
The only thing that BENAVIDEZ needs to improve is the TORSO FLEXIBILITY and HEAD MOTION.
Then BENAVIDEZ will be unstoppable in any Boxing Division.
This was a good fight for David. One of his best performances. He showed great defense, geeat footwork, great pressure, landed some beautiful combinations. He faded a little in the end but still finished strong. His opponent was very durable, many guys would've been knocked out by those punches he took. It's not always about getting the knock out. What do you do if your opponent can take your best shots? David answered with this performance. I don't see him beating Bivol or Beterbiev though.

I dont get the complaints about this fight. It was a fun fight. Gvozdyk has only been stopped once. He is past his best but still a good win at 175. Benavidez threw some good combos and had some good defense
Canelo stans are delusional. This was a good showing for Benavidez because of his footwork and head movement. Usually he stands tall and is sometimes tripping over himself.
