  • Developer Reviews: Focal Bathys vs. B&W PX8, Momentum 4, and Airpods Max. I'm currently in the market for premium Bluetooth over-ear headphones.
    In this video, I'll shoot out the Focal Bathys against the Bowers and Wilkins PX8, Sennheiser Momentum 4, and the Apple Airpods Max to find out which I like the most. Hopefully, you will also find this helpful.

    I like you enjoy music as a part of my daily life and have a few wired headphones for my daily listening needs, paired with a desktop rig and a portable rig. For travel and work related isolation needs I have usually used in ear BT monitors, but recently I desired some good quality over ears. I chose the B&W PX8, SQ, instrument separation, clarity and engagement are all excellent. I’ve not heard the Bathys, but I can see that if you prefer a purely neutral sound sig that the Bathys would be your preferred set.
    Very good over all approach to comparison and excellent overview.

      @@jaypalmer3806 Hey! Thanks. Bought the PX8, haven’t had a chance to check Max as from the design standpoint they’re a “no go” for me. Regarding the PX8, I can hear the weird compression sounds accompanying the cymbals (I’m afraid that I agree with most things that Resolve said in his review, it’s a shame that he did not covered the eq as I think that the headphone benefits from it much), and the stock bass setting is way too much (I might need to check how it performs with AptX/cable, got an iPhone). Compared with the test pair at my local dealer, sounded the same. Mid bass is overpowering for heavier music genres. I set it up for -3,5 db when working with ANC (-2,5 db without ANC). Still, I cannot sit in the headphones for long, I find them fatiguing and compared to my other headphones there’s almost no sub bass. 😵‍💫 I like how PX8 performs with Jazz, artists like Agnes Obel and classic music. The soundstage is intimate albeit not really super wide. It’s a shame I had no chance to check out the Bathys (not really fond of the size for the mobile headphones), wonder how it compares with heavier/ faster music genres / artists like Camo & Krooked or Leprous. Sorry for the long post. 😅
      I’ll keep them as they’re completely different from everything I had until now. Love how the connection works and the app is really great for my needs (I think it works faster then the Tidal app). They make some of my music playlist sound fresh and exciting. 😊
      I find some posts that suggest boosting the bass slider fascinating. It makes the headphone completely unlistenable for me.

    Great vid man :) just got APM yesterday for $430 instead of $550 but still considering returning them for the Bathys. I’m definitely an audiophile guy and usually listen with Hifiman Aryas but the noise of my work environment is just too much for open back lately. The ANC on the AirPods Max is just so good… but I want that audiophile quality that you get with the Bathys…decisions decisions!

    • @bfree45
      @bfree45 Před rokem +6

      Ok follow up... I returned the AirPods Max and got a demo Bathys for discount, and yeah... I made the right choice. The ANC isn't nearly as good but it's definitely not bad, it works and worth it for the bump in sound quality. Bathys have a true hifi sound, and I own some super high end headphones like the HiFiman Arya Stealth, He6Sev2, Ether Flow C... the Bathys still managed to impress me. Layering, imaging, soundstage, separation, all incredible. Surprisingly sweet tonality as well, not too V-shaped like most consumer BT headphones. Already, the BT quality alone is astonishing, but when you use the DAC mode with the usb c cable, it's easily just as good as the premium Focal wired closed backs.

    • @lolin2414
      @lolin2414 Před rokem

      Just remember is still Bluetooth so you won't get Audiophile quality from an over priced Bluetooth headphone that doesn't have good noise cancelation or transparency features. • @bfree45
      @bfree45 Před rokem

      @@lolin2414 I am aware of the differences. You can also listen to the Bathys or px8 completely wired with hi res lossless files and still enjoy the (mostly excellent) noise cancellation, which is a huge selling point.
      I also own focal clear mg, Dan Clark audio ether c, AKG n5005, and a desktop dac/amp stack. Can’t listen to open backs in public or even in a mildly noisy environment like a house with kids or falling asleep next to your spouse. Closed back are fine but if I wanted to use them with the best quality I’d have to use an amp/dac every time, and if it’s not a dongle that requires a power supply, aka more stuff (and more money invested)
      Or…
      When I wanna travel, work, connect to any tv or computer or gaming system in the house, block out noise, with the possibility of still enjoying the best possible audio quality via the built in DAC/amp and usb c connection, of course it’s gonna be worth it to invest in a high-end Bluetooth ANC pair. And when it comes to detail/resolution/imaging, both the Px8 and Bathys are most certainly audiophile quality, even more so when compared against the competition. With pure sound quality and resolution, they still easily hold their own against audiophile closed backs costing $600-1000

      @@PeterbFree Technically for sure if you mean electric circuit, but my Sennheiser PXC550 use some kind of weird bluetooth-over-usb tunneling or something. Even when they are connected via USB they behave exactly the same way as via BT: If some PC application requires microphone, they turn into headset device and music quality goes to hell even thou they are not limited by BT bandwidth. I would expect that they behave just like USB sound card (plus keyboard, cause gestures are translated to volume up/down, pause/stop, forward/back keys), but sadly they don't. I'm not sure how other headphones behave, but this is somewhat annoying feature, you basically can't play video game and use voice chat at the same time, sound quality for everything but voice is unacceptable.

    Very good review. I started exploring what to get into office. Here in Czech Rep. PX8 are for 18k CZK (735eur), Focal are for 20K (816eur). At this point it does not matter. Question is if I actually that expensive headphones. 5 years ago I bought Sennheiser PXC550 for 11000, due to inflation it's almost the similar price. But they sound a bit muffled and faux leather starts falling apart so first option is to have them repaired if spare parts are still available, second option is buying Sony (from one review it's like WH4 sounds pretty muffled too, if not more, so it won't help. WH5 are better, but still not perfect). I don't regret buying them, there are extremely useful in the office.
    By the way, five years ago I tried Bose QC35 as well. I could not stand them, cause with music off, I had very weird, unpleasant feeling of pressure, something you may experience in landing airplane with stuffed nose or sort of like being under the water. I don't know if it's their ANC just simulates this feeling by filtering some frequencies, but with Sennheiser I have zero issues. It feels like all sounds are nextdoors. Did anyone had this feeling with any ANC?

The Apple's comfortably the worst, by some distance. Interesting to see how different people's ears are. My advice. Buy headphones from some where it's easy to return them. In the last 12 months, I've bought and returned 7-8 sets of headphones/earbuds. I settled on the Senny Momentum 4s for when I'm at my desk and the OnePlus Buds Pro 2s for travelling. I have been on the same hunt as you. The B&W also plays as a DAC via USB and sounds the best this way. The Px8 will also charge while in DAC mode. Also, I want the option to turn off the ANC when I walk around my property and the Bathys does not offer this option. Focal does not allow the user to hear their headphones in raw-passive mode at all. They are 100% ANC/DSP confounded. What are they covering up?? I love the SenMo3 but have no interest in the 4. I do not like touch control, so the Apple are out for me as well. I always change something when taking off/on or just adjusting them. And the Bathys do not have a pause feature when you lift them off your ear/head which is a one of my most useful options.
    The Bathys looks like something from a Star Wars movie, the Senn is yawn-boring looking, the Apple is very modern looking, but the Px8 look like something James Bond would wear. Overall, I am keeping the Px8.

      I agree and ordered PX8 today. I tried Bathys and PX8 at a store, and concluded that Bathys have more of an open sound, whereas PX8 feels more like being in a concert hall, very warm tone to the music. I would say Bathys are more comfortable as I have big ears, but I chose based on the sound as I mostly listen to EDM and needed something that brings out the emotion in the music.

    I have the Focal Bathys and this noise you are referring to is due to the “play” between the metal headband and the surrounding metal around the adjustments band - it’s not the yokes themselves. This noise does not occur when the headband is not extended and only occurs when twisting - not when putting them on and removing them. The Focal also use real leather unlike the rest.

  • @demantim

    For me, it can't be understated how much better the Bathys sounds compared to the PX8, a direct competitor. PX8 has frequency troubles where even the original PX I've used since release doesn't have them, and anything orchestral falls flat on them. They're super "hyped" / V-shaped sounding, almost in Bose territory. I didn't *want* to get the slightly more expensive and weird looking Bathys, but PX8 disappointed me in such a way that I tried the Bathys immediately. With metal I think the PX8 does very nicely in the lower mids, but the hyped bass and ringing frequencies in the treble ruin it for me.
    Bathys is open and honest sounding, and quite three-dimensional for a closed back. In DAC mode it's the best sounding headphones I've owned. Highly recommended.
