I love the B rolls of John walking through different parts of Berlin, hope to see more. And John also did not disappoint with more of his unique vernacular: pendulous, flickering, crockery clatter. I agree with John that having a bit more bass in an outdoor environment can beneficial, it helps to recover the dynamic drive that can get lost in a noisy setting.

Describing something as having an “audiophile difference” i think was one of the most helpful descriptors you’ve ever used. It’s not measurable, but it really makes clear that the differences would really only matter to a small percentage of customers than the majority of the market.

Firstly, thank you so much for this review. I’ve been waiting for a long time for the Darko seal of approval on these. Furthermore, the production value of these videos is always stellar. Great work, Olaf! The fact that you guys produce two videos a week and the work it takes to do these side by side comparisons is stunning! John, take care of yourself. Don’t stretch yourself too thin! I hope you get some good rest soon. Finally, John’s Patreon is well worth joining. The playlists are very eclectic and wonderful sonic journeys. Hello John, this is another great content of yours ! I got px7 s2 and felt in love with this headphones. Sound signature of B&W straight from the box is something I love. All tones are playing separately with presence of punchy bass which is not interfering mids at all. In general those are great headphones. I decided to give a chance to px8, was afraid because price difference but OMG those are bringing experience from listening to even higher level. This amount of details which this close back Bluetooth headphones can produce (comparing to Sony's and Momentums) is amazing! Really close to mu open back Sennheiser ones. And full potential of those is when I use mu mini DAC with cable connection. Px8 became my favorite pair !

I tried the BW Px8 in-store and wow... My ears are used to the Focal sound signature.
The Px8s sounded very bass heavy to my ears. No matter what song I played, I could feel the warm sound being layered over.
They did have good enough detail. I could see these being my fun sounding headphones as I already have enough neutral sounding headphones.

Thank you so much for this excellent review where you worked hard on answering the questions so many of us have. We really appreciate your insight and explanations. Even though its nice to have good ANC on bluetooth headphones, I always want to be aware of my surroundings. I would not feel safe not hearing some level, the noise around me. So I don't want the ANC to be too good on the headphones. B&W and Focal seem to be in a good range. I have been going back and forth on PX8 vs Bathys in my head and I think your video here is helping me decide on my choice.
Now when I am home, if I want to listen to headphones, I go to my room that has my stereo, I get my Focal Clear Mg's along with an extension cable so I can sit in my comfortable chair and focus on listening to the music. All its detail, depth, micro details and having no distractions, allows me to really get into the music.
Now when I am traveling about, going for a walk, doing chores around the house from room to room, going for a walk and listening to music at the same time, I am not giving the attention to the music like I do when I sit down in my stereo room and focus on the music.
If sound was the only thing we are focusing on here with bluetooth headphones, I might go more with the Focals. However, the cheaper buttons, the bulky look, not turning off the music when you remove them from your head, and headphones that stand out more, I want to go with the PX8's.
The B&W PX7 line was decent, but the PX8 with its improved headphone band, softer leather, and most important, the improved carbon fiber driver which provides a cleaner and improved clarity is important to me. Even if the sound improvement is only 10% better than the PX7, with all the other features, it makes it worth it for me to get the PX8's. Being able to adjust the EQ is another important feature. I would probably reduce the bass by -2db so its a little more balanced. In addition, your not focusing on the music as much with bluetooth headphones when your listening when your doing chores, going for a walk, etc. When I want to really focus on music with headphones, I will use my Focal Clear MG's in my stereo room sitting in my favorite chair. The Bathy's are Focals first attempt at Bluetooth headphones and they came out with a very good model. But like the PX8 is an improvement over the PX7, Focals next bluetooth headphones will probably me even better as well and more worthy unit to own over the Bathys.

I received my PX8's today. Leather on cups and headband feel great. The sound is up front that sounds very good. I put the sensitivity on normal and it seems to work well in stopping the music when I take off the headphones. Granted I experienced a delay in it turning off the music by about 2 seconds. The headphones definitely have a quality luxury feel to them when you put them on. As the headphones are not too tight, I have not found any problems wearing them with my glasses. On my first day of listening that I like the EQ flat. So far I'm loving these headphones which are a nice size and are not distracting. The Bathys you may prefer its sound signature, however you cannot turn off noise cancellation. You can only makde adjustments with it. The bad news with this is the hiss with ANC you can't ever turn off. On the PX8 you can.

  • @MatonisMatas
    @MatonisMatas Před rokem +4

    I TOTALLY agree with John.
I have tested both PX8 and Bathys, used Sony NW-ZX507 in BT mode (my Iphone is garbage) ant Tidal.
Its True that Baty is more "hifi" sound, but PX8 is more fun, more engaging, grabbing your attention and not letting go...
On the go or on the airplane I am not audiophile, I am music lover - I need fun engaging sound with good thumping base especially when listening at low volumes and PX is right there to serve me well.
PX build is premium (this is from the owner of PX OG and Momentum 2) its looks is refined, expansive, sleek and sexy (black color, yellow is ugly, we need normal - Brown B&W). You hold them, you look at them and fell good, fell satisfied.
Bathys build - plastic cups, which reminds me of a gaming headphones (made in China, only driver is made in France) (don't know where PX is are made :/)
And the most important feature of BT NC headphones - COMFORT, PX8 is the winner in this competition hands down, Focal messed up with ergonomics - weight is big and the headband is to narrow - so uncomfortable so wrong, I hope Focal will fix it in Batys mk2.
Thanks John for a good review.

Dear John, when connecting the PX8 via USB C to an iPad (or via lightning dongle to iPhone) I am receiving Dolby Atmos when playing Apple Music, and it sounds pretty amazing and really opens up the soundstage, just like Dolby Atmos on Airpods. You can ofcourse also listen to lossless audio connecting the PX8 with USB C, although it is not mentioned up to which audio resolution the PX8's DAC is able to process. I think this feature is hardly ever mentioned on the pX8, while it's a major selling point on the Bathys.

Great review, as always. I’ve tested the Px7 S2 and found it really good sounding, although it was a bit too colored and v-shaped for my taste. So I didn’t try the PX8. Watching some other reviews I recently landed by the Beoplay H95. The longer I listen to it the more I love it. It’s another level to the Px7 S2 and also the Momentum 4 which I like a lot. It regularly gives me a wow when I listen to it. The last time when I listened to Fables (Live). It just could be a good bit louder, but boy this sounds great. Also the comfort is great and the controls are just the best, at least for my taste.

i prefer the ML5909 over Px8 & Airpods Max, i would love to try the Focal Bathys as i like the closed back wired Focals a lot, the big advantage for me is that the ML 5909 sounds way better when wired to a Fiio BTR7 or Ifi Gryphon, i use BT/NC only when travelling, when i'm in the office i always prefer wired to a portable-desktop amp/dac, i think the B&O H95 could also be interesting...

  • @dkerlee
    @dkerlee Před rokem +5

I've now owned both, I prefer the Focals.
I recently purchased a pair of Px8s off craigslist $500. The fit and finish is top notch, 10/10. Metal and pleather in all the right places. But I couldn't shake the idea of the Focals perhaps being better. If I'm in for $500, why not be in for $700 for "better?" To my ears the reviews have been spot on: mids and highs are where it's at on the Focals. I will also mention, I was listening to a song with a bass drop (Dadi Freyr: Think About Things). I heard it once on the B&Ws and was like: oh, that bass drop, love that. No way will the Focals hit this. Swapped em out, I heard every bit of that bass drop on the Focals: but it wasn't as in-your-face-punch as the bass drop was on the B&Ws. I'd chalk that up to accuracy, and DSP choices at the perspective companies. Gonna sell the Px8s and stick with the Focals.

  • @briansowden-worldwidestereo

I really appreciate this video. I've been playing around with all of these headphones and haven't jumped into the PX8s yet. I agree the thickness of the Bathys is really nice but they're not as easy to wear around in public as the XM5s. I'm intrigued what the next set of headphones will be.

Perhaps the choice also boils down to what equipment each of us already have. E.g. I already have a focal headphone, I would be less inclined to get the Bathys which although tuned differently to their open backs, but still very much the Focal house sound. Hence I have would be going for the PX8 to add a different sound signature to my collection. 🤗

I have the PX8, love them and have been curious of your thoughts on them compared to the Bathys from a sound quality perspective.
I’ll say that I compared the PX8 to the Focal Radiance (both wired and wireless-with a BT Amp/Dac) and I found the SQ to be fairly comparable, with similar clarity, separation and soundstage.
I don’t have the Bathys to compare, but I’ve heard them referred to as close to a wireless Radiance.

I have a pair of the ML 5909s and like them quite a bit as far as noise canceling headphones go.
I just bought my wife a pair of the Focal Bathis because I wanted her to enjoy great sound and good ANC as well, and she specifically requested “big, leave me alone headphones” that discourage people from trying to talk to her at the cafe; something that her IEMs apparently don’t do a good enough job of.
So… apparently big and bulky can be an asset if you’re hoping to be antisocial out in public! 😂

Any thoughts on the current batch of high end Bluetooth headphones against the Chord Mojo+Poly and a good full size headphone? For me, it’s the DCA Aeon (original). I’m really loving your comparisons between the newer Bluetooth headphones. It seems that depending on the listener’s preferences, you can pick the one that suits you best. Since they all seem to give you something a little different. Albeit with higher price points. For me, the Focals seem like my cup of tea, but that Mark Levinson, although pricier maybe the ticket. However, with your tease at the end about ANOTHER possible contender really has me intrigued and it’s killing me not knowing what it is. I have a sneaking suspicion it’s the Bluetooth electrostatic headphone, the name of which escapes me at the moment. I can’t wait till you finally reveal it!

Great content, thanks. I bought the PX8's, loved them but they would not charge, battery stayed at 23% even after multiple resets. Returned them, got a new pair and the battery died and then would not charge - at all. I've read this was an issue and B&W said there might be a firmware upgrade but if its not charging, that's a huge flaw. I was going to give a third pair a go but thought I'd try the Focal Bathys. I ended up buying the B&Ws, then ALSO the Bathys. I prefered the Bathy's slightly over the B&W. I use the DAC Mode all the time on my laptop at work. The active noise cancellation is excellent, and I like the hardware connection AND occasional Bluetooth in airports and planes.

Thank you for the really interesting reviews, I have tested this weekend the PX7 and PX8, and the difference was huge, I didn't like the PX7, the PX8 was much better but expensive, I have chosen for the dali IO6. But I have one question, you are mentioning often music that's worth listening on a HIFI headphone, which resources do you consult to discover new music?

It's very interesting you mention the size and look of the Focal. I just thought "i'll be mugged" wearing those but had no such fear with the PX8. It was one of the reasons I chose the PX8. I also love a bit of punchy bass in portable sound and the PX8 was better in that regard too. Focal had better detail but when bounding to work you leave some of the "audiophile" part of you at home so the PX8 signature was more pleasing and appropriate for me.
Although they are clearly better choices those new Sonys are so light and comfortable they will definitely be king for the general consumer. They have had quite a few more attempts at it than the others but it's great to have such great choice out there.
Thanks for the review. It's nice when you've heard these things yourself and concur with the opinions of a reviewer.

12:29 This is a great shot of the size difference between the PX8 and Bathys. The PX8 don't say LOOK AT ME like the Bathy's do. For Bluetooth I want more discrete headphones that still sound great.
His conclusion was excellent. The $400 Sony Bluetooth used to be his favorite noise canceling headphones. The PX7 2 was a little better as the Sony sounded a little bit veiled. Then as you move up in price scale, the PX8 improvements made the PX7 2 sound a little veiled. Then you pay more money for the Bathys and you get involved separation and a more spacious sound. Then you go up in price again to the Mark Levinson and it's even better than the Bathys.
Not only do you have to choice what price range you want to stay at, but also how much you will focus on the music if your doing tasks while listening?

What I don’t understand is how Bang & Olufsen doesn’t have the popularity when it comes to premium ANC headphones. I would still argue that the cheapest B&O bluetooth offering is miles ahead of Sony and Bose. Not to mention the higher end B&O models like the H95. I have not listened to the Bathys nor the B&W yet but they are in the same price range as the H95.

My current setup: AirPods Pro 2 for out and about, particularly love them for Spatial. Mojo 2 + various borrowed headphones - best, and most expensive, I've been able to use were the Hifiman Arya, a dream - listening to late Autechre on them was eye/ear opening. With the lossless EQ, I'm most interested in detail, separation and soundstage - all of which the Aryas do. Was really interested to hear your podcast partner say the Mark Levinson wired sound quality competed with much more expensive headphones. That's the dream - a single pair of headphones that work wired and unwired and sound wonderful for both the full gamut of electronic, jazz and sui generis musics. Unfortunately as far as I remember you didn't talk about soundstage with the MLs and I wonder whether soundstage as good as open backs is possible. There's also the issue of spatial audio and how well headphones work with that, something you seldom cover, despite your commenting that the new Talking Heads mixes were a 20% improvement. I think spatial is something to cover more consistently with and without your future-fi hat on. Thanks for a great channel.

Can't stay far enough away from the Bathys as they are not worth more than $400 with NO option to switch off ANC/DSP. Plus, they look like a kid toy. LOL. Love your videos!

Currently own the older PX model which has held up incredibly well over the years. ZERO signs of wear. I am toying with the idea of replacing them just to experience something different, and am considering the Audeze Maxwell - thoughts? Edit: not too concerned with ANC

John, thank you for this and all the previous videos you brought to us. Maybe there is one little detail which might be intresting when it comes to a „shootout“, and that is cupsize vs. earszise. With my bigger ears the bowers are not that comfortable than the focal are…

I'm looking for headphones for mostly indoor use where bluetooth is still a huge advantage to me since it gives me freedom to move around -- when going out, in public transport etc, I will just put in smal unobtrusive low-fi earbuds.
So for me the criteria will be sound quality with a wide variety of music, and price.
I do like the industrial design of the B&Ws but I'm afraid that sound-wise, they'll not be my thing...
    Thanks for doing the review!

Thanks! Helpful! I tend to always hit that bass boost, even on audiophile stuff, and really love to give the spotlight where it deserves to be over analytic (both is best, but super expensive). So I'm really looking forward to the PX8. can't wait to try out thunder by imagine dragons and on my level by wiz. and bts. i just really like a detailed strong punchy bass, and lovely highs in the vocals.
