Richard Pryor was Mel Brooks' first choice to play Sheriff Bart, but the studio was really nervous about Richard's drug use, so Mel kept him on as a writer and got Cleavon Little. Gig Young was originally supposed to play the Waco Kid/Jim (John Wayne actually turned down the part, saying he thought it was too blue, but would be the first in line to watch it), but had issues from alcoholism and Gene Wilder was brought in.
Mel had full editing power on the film and only cut one like because he thought it was a bit much. It was the scene where Lili Von Shtupp tries to seduce the sheriff and after turning out the lights and (after and unzipping Bart's pants) saying "It's twue!!" , Bart responds ""I hate to disappoint you, ma'am, but you're sucking my arm."

Unless you've seen many of the old westerns from Hollywood a lot of this humor will just go over your head. Mel Brooks was a genius at satarizing Hollywood movies. The more movies you have seen from the past the better and more funny movies like this are. When I saw this movie in a Chicago theater in the mid 1970's people in the theater were rolling in the isles. We, black and white, all laughed so hard our faces hurt. This movie makes fun of racism and we all knew it then and admired Mel Brooks more for it.

Mel Brooks is a genius. His comedy was equally hilarious and cerebral. Mel makes us laugh at ourselves. Mel took serious issues like racism and Nazi's and made you laugh your butt off!
A fun fact. The movie "World War Z" was made from the novel written by Max Brooks, the son of Mel Brooks and his wife the late great Hollywood beauty and actress Anne Bancroft.

You missed the pun. "Laurel & Hardy" was a famous comedy duo who did comedy shorts in the 1930's. Ever see s skit about a piano going down a long staircase and breaking? They invented that skit gag.

0:55 - That moment when you realize you're so old that nobody gets the joke. "A Laurel. And a Hardy handshake." I am REALLY feeling my age.
The thing that most people don't notice about Blazing Saddles is that everyone who is racist in that movie is stupid (good guys or bad guys) and everyone who is NOT racist is smart (good guys or bad guys). Hedley Lamarr isn't racist.
