  • The Lubavitcher Rebbe's discourse Kol Yisrael begins with the Mishnah that is recited before the study of Pirkei Avos stating: "All Israel has a portion in the world to come." In this lesson, covering chapters 1-2 of the maamar, we question why even those souls that reside in the highest levels of heaven will need to come back down to the physical world in order to experience resurrection after the coming of Moshiach.

I might have missed this if it was answered, but will we get our memories back after the resurrection?

Thank you Rabbi! You ended by saying that you were giving us not an answer but something to meditate on. So here is my meditation. We have a misperception of what "embodiment" is. We think we fill up this entire huge, clumsy body, but no. We're just this tiny pinprick inside the body, living maybe behind my left eye. And this is possible because for 99% of the things this body does, that little pinprick is not required. That pintele Yid (if that's what it is) makes just a couple of decisions every now and then. At least mine does. Most of the heavy lifting is done by the nefesh beheimis I suppose. Which is bad news when I consider that I should be in charge of much more of my day. BUT. It's good news because I, like yourself, am not enthralled with embodiment. This is no pleasure for me. But if most of the body is the experience of the nefesh beheimis, then I don't have to feel guilty or ungrateful about that. The unpleasantness in my chest and head is not Me, and those feelings can largely be disregarded. Let's see if this helps me in my Tanya practice--I can picture it better now. Gut Shabbes!
