- This episode of the tabloid TV program American Journal was originally broadcast on December 22, 1997. Various people are interviewed, discussing whatever happened to Jack Lord, including his wife Marie, Moe Keale, Kam Fong, Margaret Doversola, James MacArthur and Sharon Farrell.
Jack died one month (1/21/98) after this episode was originally broadcast on 12/22/97. He is my all-time favorite actor.
I ran into Jack Lord at Wards Centre in Waikiki in the late 80’s. He was dressed in all white and wearing a white Panama Hat. He casually spoke to me for several minutes and I kept thinking I know this guy, who is he? Later a remembered seeing a white Lincoln or Cadillac earlier during my visit at Wards Centre and the license plate said “Five O” on it. When I finally connected all the dots I thought “Oh my God, that was Jack Lord… 😳
So Jack Lord gets capitalized but not God.
I highly doubt jack lord would be driving around in a vehicle with License plates that said that........Good story tho.lol.

Hawaii Five-0. A wonderful television show when it initially ran, 1968-1980. I'm still watching the original Five-0 over forty years since it went off the air. God bless the late Jack Lord, his wife, and the rest of the Five-0 cast and crew.
Sad to think that they're all gone now. I love Hawaii Five-O and still watch it on dvd.

There will never be another State Police Detective actor like Jack Lord. He was the icon of Hawaii Five0. The Mastermind of solving Crimes and capturing criminals. He was born for that role. It was his vocation and he fulfilled his acting career as Steve McGarrett. He was astonishing in that character role, a natural fit. The rest is Hollywood History and he became an Icon for his tremendous acting abilities, a true professional that found his vocation in life. Priceless accomplishment, genius!
I wished that I met Jack Lord when he was alive ! I remember when my family and I had to wait 2 in a half hours aboard a 747 air plane when we along with other passengers had to go to their destination at the Honolulu airport . This was back in the late summer of 1980 . My family and I were going to the Orient for a family trip . During those 2 in a half hours , we could have been shopping at the souvenir store in the airport , and maybe I could have run into Jack Lord and his wife Marie Lord ! Hopefully when I leave this world , I will get the chance to meet Jack Lord and his wife Marie Lord in Heaven . Any way again , thank you for sharing this video with me !
The first Felix Lieter in the James Bond franchise-Dr.No.He was so cool looking with those Ray Bans and dark pompadour hair style and then add in the crisp enunciation of his lines,he was the ultimate tv detective.I grew up watching Hawaii 5 0 and wanted to be Jack Lord,lol.
That's right! He WAS the first Felix Leiter. I hadn't thought about that in years (haven't seen Dr. No in years either,) but that's a key character & initial characterization by Lord. Good call!
It’s understandable, that having been such a dynamic TV presence for 12 years, you’re not anxious to be seen as old or ill. Even during production of the series, where he exercised total control, Jack Lord was known as a private man. Sharon Farrell said that he was showing signs of trouble during the final year. In any case, Lord left behind a positive legacy in Hawaii. In addition to bringing TV production to the state, he and his wife were generous toward many humanitarian causes. He loved his adopted state, and is still spoken of warmly to this day.
Love Jack ,but honestly it's sounds like his cognitive and physical health started going down the tubes.ide like to watch the very last episode of it to see I can catch any difference in him from the first episode.....

Some actors doing a television series and doing to long just like 10 years or more even 8 years they tend get tired and forgot their lines and going through the motions that why they should do the show 5 years that long enough for a actor doing a weekly series. Jack Lord want to ended the show end of 10th season and CBS went on for another season and Lord plead CBS he want to ended in 11 seasons and CBS want another season. And Jack Lord was definitely tired during season 12. And CBS finally cancelled it. 12 years 284 episodes that is a lot and I imagine that Jack Lord want to do the show 5 years. Like I say doing the show for a long time just like Gunsmoke and was on 20 seasons and James Arness was on the entire run and he was tired and also appears episodes briefly due to his bad legs and they shoot all his scenes in the morning and he then leave. The average seasons of tv shows is 5 years.

Always watched the show in first-run. Jack Lord was great as the series lead. It was unfortunate he didn't continue as CIA agent Felix Leiter after "Dr. No" in the next few Sean Connery James Bond films.
Jack wanted to be left alone and had a wife who supported that. After working all day and week, I hear him.
She was french and would bring his home made lunch to him.

I was an extra on an episode during the final season of Hawaii 5-O and although I was pretty young at the time, like 11 or 12 I distinctly remember the producer having to constantly reminding Jack of his lines. He looked and reacted physically like an old man. I remember being a bit disappointed because I was expecting to see this active, virile guy I'd seen on television as a kid.
I'm getting set to watch the final season on my DVDs soon. Which episode were you on so I can watch out for you?
People aged quicker back then but he seemed 69 on that last season instead of 59. Big difference.
He was my favorite actor on my favorite TV show when I was five.
I loved to watch Hawaii Five-0.
It is sad that he got alzhiemers disease (a fatal disease which has no cure) that causes progressive dementia and he could not remember his lines and many other important parts, including how to keep it going. Consequently, the most popular TV police series ended when he retired because he was the show that held it all together.
Apparently, he died happy in peace and love.

Back in the Seventies, I went to Colonial Williamsburg. At the Visitors Center it showed a movie short to introduce all visitors to Colonial Williamsburg. In it was Jack Lord in one of the leading roles.
I'm from Brasil and visited Colonial Williamsburg in 2012. Unforgettable. I want to return and explore it more.

He was a great actor no doubt about it . Bar none.. I tried watching Alex O ' Laughlin play the part of Chief of Detectives Steve Mc Garrett on the new version of " Hawaii Five O" , I was bored by the way he played Steve Mc Garrett. Now Jack Lord , he was a better actor than Alex O ' Laughlin . Let's face it , Jack Lord will be remembered as the best Steve Mc Garrett on " Hawaii Five O !. " Thank you Jack Lord so much for the memories ! And Marie Lord , thank you for having a great husband and being so sweet and kind to your husband Jack Lord . I was never a big fan of Hawaii 5-0, but there were two episodes unforgettable episodes: The ones with Simon Oakland and singer Nancy Wilson. Jack Lord was a natural to play Stoney Burke, and everything that Leslie Stevens did made that show a winner, even if it ran only one season.

Hawaii Five-O was one of my three favorite crime shows, the other two being The Rockford Files and Mannix. And there must have been over a hundred police and private investigator shows back then.
I found him so handsome. I was a teenager when the show aired in my country. Who didn't have a crush on him.

I'm a fan of Jack & Hawaii Five-O. From what I've read, Lord was a mixed bag of things. Intense, driven, private, a tough taskmaster, and a difficult gent to work with and disliked by many. He also, according to Five-O producer Perry Lafferty, was responsible for taking charge of the show and keeping it running for years, after the death of the creator-producer of the show early in the series run. Jack & Marie gave a great deal of money to charities. I believe that most people like to ascribe to the people they admire all their virtues, and none of their vices. The truth is we are both.

1985 and I'm stationed at a training command on Ford Island in Hawaii. I'm the FNG so I get tasked to be one of the bodies supplied by my command to support the CINCPAC change of command when Adm. Crowe got relieved by Adm. Hayes and then went on to become Joint Chiefs Chairman. Anyways, my tasking was to stand at a spot on the running track in front of the bleachers and as a guest's limo approached, come to attention and hold my right arm out perpendicular from me to indicate where the limo should stop, then open the passenger door for the guest. Yeah, rough task, I know. Anyways, one of those guests was Mr. Jack Lord himself. I opened the door and out he popped. I thought that was pretty cool.
What did his hair look like Specifically? And did he have any cognitive issues at all ?
He died a year after this was broadcast at the age of 78, of congestive heart failure. So undoubtedly his health was not good at this time.

he gave an interview to an Australian newspaper in the mid 80's, so as they say there, he was still the 'full quid' during that time.

Early Alzheimer's. i also talked with people who worked on the original series. he was forgetting lines, he'd walk on the set and look lost, not recognizing people he seemed to know the day before, even crew members (like my friend) who had been with the show for a decade seemed to be unfamiliar to him. i can remember when he said "you could tell by the look in his eyes...something was not all right with Jack. Eyes that used to smile at you now seemed distant and unfocused. it was very sad"
Someone on a talk show years ago said things were taking a turn around the time he was only seen being driven around by others (Danno, etc) while filming automotive scenes in the show.
@Dave F. There is a documentary on the original show and James MacArthur said that in the final season Lord wasn't well and he had Alzheimers.

I watch the reruns all the time. When I can catch a street name I'll go on Google maps and try to find the same location. A lot of the places still look the same.

Jack Lord suffered from Alzheimer's Disease for many years including the last season of Five-0. His wife, fashion designer Marie de Narde in the story above, lied to protect her and Jack's privacy until his death Jan. 1998 because of his Alzheimer's Disease.

As much as i love Jack Lord I sadly feel he was suffering from it and it makes since that his wife would say things to protect him.
I thought the very same thing, especially when she made the ridiculous statement that he walks on the beach every day and writes poems in the sand. Yeah, right. Not to mention, but if he walked the beach daily, did he use a cloaking device? I am a big fan of the series and was born the year it began. In 1973, I had toy binoculars with "Hawaii 5-0" and a bust pic of Jack Lord. I have no idea whatever happened to it, but I wish I still had it.

Great actor, eventually hobbled (and humbled I'm sure) by just bad health coming with old age. Hey -- aging happens to everyone. Sounds like he had a great life in retirement with his devoted wife. We should all be so lucky. RIP Jack.

Interesting that this Video was made in 1997 and he died in 1998.
From his wiki page he had Alzheimer's disease the last 8 years in his life and probably more years than that as in his final year of the series, he walked stiffly and was forgetting his lines.
There is a story that in the 1980s, James MacArthur visited him at his Beach tent to get him to make a TV Movie based on the series.
He left the tent and cried like a baby after he realized that Lord had a serious case of this disease that robs you of your mind through no fault of your own. MacArthur did not want that to come out of his interview here.
My father had this disease and died like Lord of a heart attack.

Hawaii-Five-0 (the 1968 version) was the best show ever put together. Jack Lord played a big role in it but not just by his acting, his insistence of hiring locals made the show more realistic. But, I'm not surprised to hear rumors of his ego. Jack Lord was offered the part of Captain Kirk in Star Trek but he demanded ownership of half the show. The producers told him to take a walk. Also, there were other offers Lord had and he made similar demands. His ego must have been gigantic.
He never showed any emotion on that show.
But when he got the control he wanted, he sure took the ball and ran with it. 5-0 was one heck of a show.
having met Gene Roddenberry (part of a college project where we were fortunate to meet this creative genius) i can remember when he talked about the development of star trek and wanting Lord in the Captain's seat. he said he admired Lord's work, but "(he) wasn't THAT good and no one was going to own this show but me/ he must have thought he was Elvis Presley or something" (elvis was known to want ownership of his 'covers' of the songs written by others. he wanted to cover "I will always love you" but Dolly would not give him even partial ownership of her song)

He was an excellent actor, executive producer and director of many of the episodes. Lord starred in Hawaii Five-O for its 12 seasons (1968 to 1980) as Detective Steve McGarrett, appointed by the governor to head the State Police criminal investigation department in Honolulu, Hawaii. When series creator Leonard Freeman died in 1974, the show's ownership was shared among Lord, CBS and Freeman's estate, with a contract that made Lord executive producer and gave him complete control over content. He was a hands-on partner who paid attention to minute details, and was known for battles with network executives because he insisted on excellence. I think one aspect of the show that worked so well, and was new for being highlighted was how the forensics lab would wind up either solving the crime or providing the clinching evidence. Good ol Che Fong and his last minute revelations were gold in a day when tv didn't feature this aspect much.
He also played a semi-psychotic outlaw in "Man of the West" starring Gary Cooper, Lee J Cobb, and Julie London. Also 2 of my favorite character actors: John Dehner and Royal Dano.

When we arrived at the Hilton Hawaiian Village late one night in Dec, 1986, there was a sign showing he was hosting an event at the hotel that night. Unfortunately, we didn't see him.
Shortly after this episode aired. Jack Lord passed away in January of 1998.
Herman Wedemeyer died in 1999. Kam Fong in 2002.
I saw the show in syndication during the 1980's and 1990's. I saw Jack in Dr No as James Bond CIA contact, episodes of The FBI, The Fugitive, Ironside before he became Steve McGarrett.

Herman Wedemeyer was an All American halfback, who played for the Saint Mary Gaels. He played high school football at Saint Louis College in Honolulu. He used to live in my neighborhood back in the Thirties. Kam Fong was a classmate of my brother at McKinley High School in the Thirties.

Two of the series regulars, Henry Darrow and Cameron Mitchell co-starred on hawaii 5 0. The entire series came out on DVD years ago. Needless to say i have that series also. Can fully recommend it.

I loved the show as a kid and then had the good fortune to be stationed there while in the military. And then he died on my birthday. A couple of weird coincidence's.
I'm sure that Marie was trying to protect her husbands privacy as well as his legacy. Jack may not have wanted his personal information out there for the public to know. I choose to remember him as he was, when he was playing Steve McGarrett so brilliantly.

Action television series takes a toll on actors. Big money and limelight, but a lot of hard work. Look at James Garner...his legs were shot by the time he was 50, because of Rockford Files. You can tell a big difference in Telly Savalas in the 80's after Kojak ended as opposed to the 70's. Lee Majors had multiple knee surgeries...surprised he's not worse! So there can be a lot of other wear and tear factors on the body ...not just for Lord, but McArthur too.

That sound like early onset signs of Alzheimer's. Can't blame the guy's retreat from public life. But it also explains why I haven't seen or heard anything from Jack until his passing. The show used to come on over here in the UK on Friday nights on ITV.
My mother watched every episode of 5-0 in the 70s. On CBS.

There was no mystery. He was very private. He was also suffering from what eventually took him away from us: congestive heart failure. Medication for congestive heart failure is very debilitating. Someone who had been as vigorous as he had been might prefer not to be seen in public.
Think it's on Imdb that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1990. It did sound like he had serious memory issues. Sad but he was happy and he did his bit.

But if he was suffering from heart failure (and associated dementia) since 1979, he lived very much longer than most people suffering from those conditions.

I heard rumours many many years ago that Jack was a nightmare to work with and was addicted to cocaine. I don't know if any of that was true or not it's just what the word on the street was at that time. What I will say is as a kid growing up I loved watching 5-0 and his catchphrase "book him Danno". I hope he's doing ok.
I did heard that Jack Lord was very hard to work with and he was so demanding and I see why his co stars left the series. Zulu left in 1972,Al Harrington left in 1972,Kam Fong left in 1978,James MacArthur decided he leaving in 1979 and left the last minute and told the CBS he leaving and Jack Lord didn't was pleased about that and they already had script for season 12 for him and now they had to rewrite the script and had another actor to take the part and they had William Smith to replace MacArthur. I wonder did Jack Lord had some kind of ego or have obsessed with his work and don't want to see his co-workers had little fun and play and just focused on their work on the set.and he must be real strict.
