The Peak End Rule: What You Actually Remember From a Experience
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 15. 06. 2024
- People tend to judge and remember experiences based on how they felt at the peak and at the end of it. This psychological phenomenon is known as the peak-end-rule. The model was first proposed by Barbara Fredrickson and Daniel Kahneman and infers that instead of remembering a whole experience we only remember snapshots of it. Today we know that how well the rule works also depends on our expectation going into the experience.

Before a new experience, you can consciously lower expectations. This sets up a lower threshold for negativity, which makes the experience more acceptable or memorable with a more âopen mindedâ approach. Prejudging is often a negative factor wherein imagination sets you up,or teases you. Simply let it happen on its own terms. Giving situations a chance to play out is the policy that keeps anticipation from clouding judgement. Relax and be patient!
I think this works very well in relationships and can also explain how some people stay in abusive relationship
Love your videos
I had learnt this concept from my own experience in my life.đđ
This is a good video....
I expected a very good video from Sprouts....
I had a bad experience.
... So disappointed! đ
The most important thing is to do your thing to the best of your ability allowing experience and feedback to refine the rough edges. The biggest errors are, a) creating unrealistic expectations in the minds of potential customers (usually through bullshit advertising), and b) trying to live up to other people's expectations, particularly in personal relationships. Expectations exist in the individual's mind and are beyond the control of anyone else. Setting yourself the goal of "meeting or exceeding expectations" is a suicide mission doomed to failure.
I like to paraphrase this as
"Be optimistic when things are going downhill, it does not stop you from improving"
Movies have to face this problem, for example I can barely remember anything about the first Avatar movie, yet it was a huge box office hit. But ask me for a line from little known movies and I have plenty of them. Thatâs because I had low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Ie âAttaboy Luther!â From the Ghost and Mr. Chicken with Don Knotts.
Superb quality video.
Love the way you present â€
Love the way you want to learn!
interesting vid you guys did there and i sure would most remember the cold water experiment part the most
Amazing! Fantastic! Incredible! Not only better than Marvel movies, but even better than famous book that I read about this issue
Thanksâ€
I found this video confusing because I was thinking of peaks as the best moments. Everything becomes obvious when peaks are thought of as the most standout moments, whatever that would be in context.
That experiment makes no sense if looking for the peak âgood momentâ, but if the peak is the pain from the water at 14 degrees, then it makes perfect sense. The second scenario is preferred because it ends on slightly less discomfort, and the peak of that discomfort is before the end.
Iâm with you!
Awesome video
Arsenal explanation good job
I had experience once been with wheelchair I was 5 years old at the time my wife's wheelchair
Amazing channel.
Thanks for the visit :)
My takeaway is the best possible result of anything stems from keeping expectations as low as possible by default.
2:30 Small error in the experiments description. It's -10 F and 14C. Water freezes at -14c đ
Exceptional content great presentation
I love love love this channel, i want to be a psychiatrist and you have so many good videos on that
I can relate to some of these themesđ
Curious about how this applies to travelling.
People remember an empty car ride as eventful if they get to eat somewhere good in the middle, and get a perfect rest at their destination hotel.
I it possible to implement this in a creative writing setting?
How much I pay for an item or service will of course affect my expectations for it.
đ
This makes sence why I always say the ending of the movie to people
Bettelheim theory pleaseđ
This kinda explains why i'm bad at sex.
"Would you rather dip your hand in ice-cold water for a minute? Or do that and hold it for an extra minute while the water is raised by one degree?"
I think I'd rather leave.
"But you'll forfeit your participation gift card."
*Eff* your gift card and dip your own heads in that cold water! I'm out! (slam door)
I was born with psychic ability since young. Even though I haven't watched the video yet (which I will after this), I already know psychically what it is about: it is the idea and theory of how people reach their peak before ending. You know, the highs and lows of life - reaching the top of one's career and falling. Okay, anyway, enough talk, time for me to watch the video to confirm my psychic accuracy.
You absolutely failed lol
I was right đ
â@@evita9284then i guess you are watching a different one because this one is about psychology and how your memory works
@@danielazevedoteixera4194 They're delusional lol

This voice is now forever engrained in my mind for mocking Stanley. ^^
I took my wife to Disney World during its 50th Anniversary, for the 1st Anniversary of our wedding. I pulled out all the stops, even inquiring about the Disney Vacation Club so we could tour the Riviera. It was a full 5 day vacation, visiting all 4 theme parks.
I made sure the 1st and 5th day were both at Magic Kingdom, and we did Magic Kingdom After Hours on the 3rd day, after being in Animal Kingdom, to exploit this exact phenomenon.
We stayed at the All Star Movies, a Disney Resort Hotel. I literally blew through $5,000 and I have absolutely no regrets. I even have exclusive 50th Anniversary souvenirs that will be worth a lot of money in the future.
I doubt they could submerge their hand in -10C đ

The peak rule applies to women in their 20s big time. They expect to find their "guy" in their peak years but don't get him. Then in their 30s and 40s wonder where did all the good men go and end up settling and bitter. So based on this rule, it is better for women in their 20s to not go into trying to find the top alpha mate but the nice guy. Then when the women is much older she will think her choice of man much better as she remembers her life. Tragic most women don't apply this to their lives.....
And you would know how exactly?
@TheThora17 Well, since you brought it up, Thora the Explorer, let's use you as Test Subject #1. How old are you? Dress size? Married? Kids? Divorced? Age? How much do you make in your profession? What is your profession?....Start with those honest answers and then I will break down how the peak rule applies directly to you.
@@antarahmoody575 Thank you very much for your concern, although equating my name to a childrenâs fictional character then underhandedly attempting to insult me with it speaks volumes towards your character. I just wanted to hear where you get your facts fromâŠ
@@antarahmoody575 And how about yourself? Age? Balding? Single child?Profession? Friends? Dress size? Number of Divorces? Is your best friend a dog? Number of arrests? Child custody battles? You seem quite intelligent- letâs hear how you assess yourself to the degree of accuracy you seem to place upon your âtheoryâ
