I was a drummer in the opening ceremonies-- had two guys carrying the green Taiko drum I was playing on the field. Wore one of those pringle outfits. We waited with John Williams at every rehearsal and on the big day. Great guy. He teased me about having my music on a transparency taped to my drum-- said "I wrote that one!!" It was hot as blazes and a once in a lifetime memory.
thats so cool…heard olympic infrastructre in atlanta is in shambles though
Wow! I truly always wondered what it was like for all of you performers. Thanks for sharing your experience! I remember watching this like it was yesterday

Will never forget the 1996 Olympics. I was fortunate to be one of the people who got to perform as Izzy, the mascot of the games. Made appearance throughout the event and Centennial Olympic Park. Once in a lifetime experience!

The question is though… Whatizit?
@@TheGammingPie what are you trying to compete in?
What a time to be alive living in Atlanta in the 90s. Here I was 13yrs old, huge Braves fan coming off world series win. The whole world on your front doors step and in your backyard for 2+ weeks.
1990s Braves seemed upstobbale back then.
@@nandarox528 That pitching staff was amazing. Glavine. Smoltz. Maddux Avery all in a row. Mark Wholers the closer. Then you got David Justice. Fred Mcgriff. Grissom and Chipper jones and Javy Lopez. They should have won at least six world series like the bulls in basketball.
My sister, Nicky, was working in the production truck coordinating all the camera shots so that what you and I enjoyed watching of the opening and closing ceremonies could flow seamlessly. She left an awesome memory for millions of people not only by the Olympics in 1996 but also the three Olympics prior.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Bravo! Was she with Olympic Broadcasting or NBC?
@@JamesBarcus NBC. She was with them for the Sydney, Seoul, Sarajevo and Vancouver Olympics as well as Atlanta.

There is no such ceremony in existence at least not vision broadcasting of the Olympics only began in 1936 and back then they weren’t even like this they just an athletes parade

On a warm June day in '96, my father and I made a short drive to Bennington, VT to watch the Olympic Torch Relay. We were lucky in the choice of our spot as we watched a hand-off directly in front of us. My father passed away three months later but I will always have that memory of the two of us getting to see that.
Wow I love these moments In life too
I live in Belfast, N Ireland, UK and one of my most abiding memories is taking my late father to Belfast City Hall to see 'The Flame' on it's way to London 2012 and when the relay guy stopped and let my father touch the torch made him so happy and proud that 'our wee town' was part of 'The Olympics'
What a great memory of you and your father
Sorry for your loss
I get emotional when I watch this I am so proud of my city ATLANTA ❤ .
Give me the thumbs up if you are watching this after watching 2020 Tokyo Opening ceremony
This ceremony shows in a nutshell how much better the world was in 1996. Imagine if you were an alien, and watched both the 2020 and 1996 opening ceremonies - which time would you want to live in? It's hard to imagine the 2022 opening ceremony having fans or any elaborate sets either.
The 2020 games showed how Japan has become a sad and decaying country. Istanbul or Madrid would have done much better. Rio 2016 was much better.
@@Caveirazul it's more declining than decaying. I'm sure in the future it'll bounce back. I mean Europe survived the Black Death and the Mongols.
@@frankieseward8667 They need migrants.
I wish that Tokyo would've put up a more energetic opening ceremony with some J-pop music and anime appearances including Miku Hatsune. Tokyo should've put up a much more better performance, and the same energy that Atlanta did back then.

Thank you for going through this video and pointing out the times of key events in this Atlanta Opening Ceremony!! :) :)
For a few of us back in 96' our world felt like a peaceful, simple and much more friendly place to be silly and care free 🏅🏅🏅
That's because the Crack and Opioids epidemic didn't have the same press publicity as the Covid-19, but it was (and still is) more lethal than any virus.
Also, the media itself was more fair and less sensational and one sided. Today it's all about hatred and hysteria.
Atlanta 1996 has the great ceremonies in the Olympic histories. My favourite segment is the Atlanta Welcome Wave. because the song "Welcome to the World" was cool.
@@alphanimtheskykid it was very special but London communicated the greatest message of achievement and growth of a nation. From the birth of the industrial revolution to the creation of the national health service to witnessing the mainly peaceful end of an empire to the rise of music and culture to the gift of the internet to the world.
Now that's an historical segment worth watching because we can all relate and be a part of their contribution to all our history.
@@superyachtchef In addition, my favourite part at the start of video is when the spirits and the tribes from the Olympic rings, and 450 children that come into the stadium and form "100" to represent the Centennial year. They later appear for the second and third times they perform the dance.
You're just older.
This is currently the last occasion that United States hosted the Summer Olympics. The next time will happen in 2028 in Los Angeles. In this ceremony, the nations are announced in French and English respectively. Spanish should be added for the parade of nations of 2028 Olympics.

One of the best events to be a part of. They ran the Olympic torch through my town on the way to Atlanta. My family went to the Outer Banks for the first time a day after this, the first time we stayed in another state as a family. It was fun to watch the Olympics on TV at the beach for the first time. Jeff Rouse from my hometown, won gold in the 100 meters in the backstroke in swimming that year.
This was my first Olympics that I was being an audience in front of TV when I was 12, my Olympics memory was starting from that moment. From that year I became a big fan of Olympics each time and found out it is the place that I could actually engage with the whole world in this way, and this feeling is great~~~~~
For me it was Lillehammer '94. Ever since then, the olympics denote a sort of a 'benchmark' of my life. "Another Olympics...time sure flies".
It kinda hit me when I reached the point where I realised that I am older than most competitors.
For me it started 92, but by 94/96 I was hooked.

One of my favorite opening ceremony of all times Barcelona was next
I was five years old when I watched this in my home city. I got to go to a baseball game, saw the torch and "Izzy" drive by on the streets of Atlanta, and was held for a picture by the woman's soccer team.

It's already been official. The 2032 Olympics will be held in Brisbane, Australia 🇦🇺
2036 JAKARTA, INDONESIA
I remember watching the Atlanta 1996 Closing Ceremony but I did not get to see the whole thing because back in 1996 ,
The Olympic Truce did not work too good for me on a school night as in back to school the next morning ( Monday ) when I was an autistic SPED school student
( in fact , beginning My Senior Year in High School ) . Now that I am an autistic stay at home son I have all the time in the world for an Olympic Party .
With that said , this shows more than even what NBC themselves showed on that night of the opening ceremony .
Thank Goodness for The Olympic Channel !! Please post the closing ceremony as well .
Honestly , whomever posted this couldn't have picked a better time for it . I needed a little light from the light right now .
This is my favorite ceremony of all time!
Its just amazing looking bk at thiz moment and to think i was 11 yrs old when this took place had no clue what this meant, and ive been lucky to be alive to watch more Olympic ceremonies to this day, i share this moment w my kids and tell them what it means, nxt Olympics in 2021 will be unprecedented, unique and special symbolizing what 2020 was, and what is to come....
Miss. Celine Dion, the power of the dream.

Thank you! It was the only ceremony that I needed to see complete 😍because I didn't yet 🙏
My mom says that she remembers this vividly cuz me at 5 months old was sleeping in my pack and play while my mom and my grandparents watched this at my grandparents house
Oh my gosh I've been waiting years for a decent version of this to turn up! The "Ancient Olympics" portion with Basil Poledouris's music (57:30) is the best segment that's ever been in the opening ceremonies!
Agreed
I love that too!
Just finished watching on June 9, 2020 at a time in our world when a pandemic canceled the Tokyo Summer Games and racial tension is very high. Wish the games could be held, it would be so nice to see people cheering together. If just for 16 days of global happiness.
Hopefully Paris 2024 & LA 2028 are like that!!!
I can't be the only one when I hear the Olympic hymn and anthem I get chills on my arms and back
Amazing opening ceremony! Aleluya! Greetings from Colombia!
Not ashamed to say that Welcome To The World at 24:00 still gives me goosebumps. So nice to have a clean copy up at last!
I watch this part on repeat alot. lol
Me too.
at the end of that I was completely speechless
OMG same!! We taped the opening ceremony on VHS and we would re-watch it over and over again x 1000! So glad to see it in HD. Naturally I watched that part 5x just now haha! 😂
This ceremony represents the kind of USA the world misses, today.
That’s what I was thinking before seeing your comment. Modern day USA is messed up 😕 Two party division saying this & that. Police brutality & many more problems.
@@jesusbarraza8428 well...at least they are seriously talking about it, now. The dialogue has reopened. It's up to the people. Let's hope that the americans take a step forward when this blows over.
@@jesusbarraza8428 also sad to think that policebrutality in the US is nothing new.
@@jesusbarraza8428 That still existed in the 90s... it just is culminating now
@@roddo1955 EXACTLY
My favorite opening ceremony! I was only 14 in 1996 going to swimming pool everyday in a hope to be a part of Sydney 2000.
back then...all of us were so looking forward to the future..a future filled with all possibilities and peace...now....
The SHADOW part is the best part!!! So simple. So beautiful.
Wonderful to see can't wait to summer for the 2020/2021 Olympics god bless those who are participating
I could have sworn that the "spirits" on the ramparts of the stadium at the beginning were from Nagano! Man, memory is a weird thing...
Unforgetable! Perfect!
Having watched this opening in 1996 and watching this replay gives me nostalgia and coming to my conclusion that, this was the best sports event opening I have ever watched. This was simply the BEST. The organisers spent every sweat on something that is likely never ever get a repeat in our life time. Love from Namibian 🇳🇦🇳🇦🇳🇦
First Olympics I ever watched 😊. Good times. I was 9 years old
same here! 7 years old!!
Same here. Turned 10 during the games. I will never forget. And it attracted me to Atlanta were I'm now a resident.
Me too!!
The most memorable moment was Muhammad Ali lighting the cauldron!
I'm not sure why he got the honor do to that. I mean, how is boxing a "Sport"?
@Kevin Dominic Kinoc
I'm fully aware it's an Olympic sport. But to me punching another humanbeing unconscious is definitely not a sport.

@Kevin Dominic Kinoc He won gold in Rome.
this is the 25th anniversary of the Atlanta Games I wish I could voluteered there.
Wait For LA 2028
Loved the "welcome around the world, welcome everybody 😀 ' and John Williams "Summon the Heroes" . My friend represented New Zealand in the 50km Road Walk at Atlanta.
Life was so much fun and happier back then. Wish we could still be as united.
It's too late. Far too late. The only thing that will unite us again is a common enemy but I don't see China starting a third world war. They prefer making money.
John Williams es un GENIO!
I was back home in Ilion NY (15minutes easr of Utica NY) watching this on TV. 196 nation's later after Greece lead off the parade on nation's just the sight of Bruce Baumgartner carrying the STARS AND STRIPES into Olympic Stadium as the host country gaves my the goosebumps and still does every time I see this😊😊😊😊GO USA
Summon The Heroes. Theme No. 4 used by NBC Universal for its Olympic coverage, alongside Bugler's Dream, Olympic Fanfare and Theme, The Olympic Spirit and Call of the Champions (winter only).
Lots of practice went into this, and it's beautiful!
Atlanta games I'm never forget.
I was there for the closing ceremonies. I loved the opening so much more though. WOW!!!!!!! Thank you so much for posting this. Amazing!!!!!
Absolutely incredible summer Olympics games opening ceremonies the bestest
And worked really hard especially behind the scenes put all together
This year seems simple I scale compared to Athens, Beijing, London… but the energy, enthusiasm, optimism, friendliness, and hope that comes through the performances is so powerful. American spirit
Muhammad Ali's lighting was epic
Atlanta's organizers had said it themselves that they are not a world-famous metropolis, nor were they pretending to be one for the Olympics. Atlanta was all about Southern Hospitality, being genuine, and showcasing a part of America to the world not often talked about in pop culture. I think the 1996 Olympics really shines in its warmth and energy, something that many successor games lack despite being bigger and more flashy.
