Germany's Matthias Steiner won Olympic weightlifting gold at the 2008 Beijing summer games, but just a year previously he almost quit the sport completely. The German had a very different reason to most athletes for the emotional outpour that Olympic victory sparks.

The story didn't end here. In 2009 Matthias had to skip the world championship as he had to undergo surgery and thus couldn't regain shape in time. The next year he became world champion. Steiner found a new love and married her in 2012. He's now a successful nutrition coach and speaker.
Good on him.
That's all nice but the wife story is the real inspiration for the people. Many people experienced ups and downs but what makes this particular guy's story unique is the wife and olympic gold.
I’m glad he overcame his challenges. The best to him and his family
All the best to him and his family. Many people in my country were so touched by him and his wife’s story.
the funny thing is, at 06:40 you see his new wife with the blue dress and blond hair working as a tv moderator… they got together later that year
It's crazy to me that 12 years later some of us are watching this video and being motivated. That one fraction of a second can motivate people for over a decade gives me a bit more hope
that story was heart wrenching . for me it's the most inspirational sports story.
You are not the only one watching it, friend¡ When I feel a bit down, I just watch this story and my spirit lifts up. It is true¡

Still watching and being motivated in 2022
Almost the end of 2022 lol

When he said that he didn't want to show the world that he was alone, and held up the photo of his wife next to him... That got me.
That got everyone, you're not human if that didn't get you
She died 2007 in a frontal car crash so this was very emotional

Crazy how your life's lowest and highest points can be so close to one another and so emotionally linked. An amazing story, an amazing athlete.
How can a person not be happy for him? That reaction was thrilling!
He by the way was chosen as "German Sportsman of the Year" in the same year as the first and only weightlifter to ever win this title. He is in a row with legends like Boris Becker, Michael Schumacher and Dirk Nowitzki - and rightfully so.
freakin earned it
he deserves
Born and grow up in Austria ! Team Austria don`t want him anymore !
Wilm Wilmink what?
Runenstein He had problems with the austrian coaches. They said he is not good enough. After that he changed to Germany whem i can say this so. Sry for my english, i am German xD
“ I didn’t want to be up there alone “ holds up a picture of his wife. That really broke me 💔😭
that broke me completely, I cried my eyes out

I met this guy in a supermarket in Leimen, Germany. I think no one realized it was him, looked like a normal big guy doing grocery shopping. The best part about him wasn't actually the competition but the interview he gave on german TV. It was one of the nicest guys ever interviewed in a sports interview, maybe that's why he has become kind of a TV star in Germany since.
Wow
The last bit where he's posing for the camera while holding a picture of his late wife had me choked up...
I'm right with ya, I've seen plenty of emotional videos on youtube, but this is the only video where I've nearly lost it.

That really got me as well...
me too. crying is not a crime and this story is too heartwarming to not cry.
I don't think he could have done that without his wife in his mind as he lifted that weight.. Its crazy how powerful emotions can be, what they can do to the body and mind in very intense moments.
Seriously man..
Nothing to add! Strong man, inside and out!!
...Großartiger Typ, ich erinnere mich gut an seinen Sieg und das Foto seiner Frau mit oben aufm Siegertreppchen. Solche Geschichten schreibt Olympia eben auch...
Jason W His wife probably wasn't on his mind as he lifted the weight. His mind was probably on lifting the weight and maintaining his form. His wife could most definitely be the reason he showed up to compete that day, or the reason he trained hard to get where he was, but in that exact moment I would say most weightlifters would agree that she probably was not what was running through his mind at that moment

MrDavid650 shortest movie ever 🤣
After he lifted his ultimate weight, he`s going down and his face seems to express all his torture and grief, his longing and humbleness in the second of his greatest success in life.
He will be in my heart not because he was professional but because he was a human being torn by doubt.and faith, outgrowing himself in his most authentic second of his life.
That`s what live is about, far away from consume, profession and security, there he is, the inner core we are searching for.

I always get tears in my eyes watching videos about this moment. This has to be one of the greatest olympic moments ever.

On one hand, rightfully so.
On the other hand, we will all see our loved ones back in Heaven - should it exist or not, it doesn't matter.
So, Matthias, from one countryman to another - You earned that one, and you WILL see your wife back when you perish.
'Tis is all our insecurities AND our successes in one story.

I get there's always controversy and it sucks that there is when it comes to any Olympic Games.
But this, this is what it's all about. The chance to live out a dream, the chance to represent your country, the chance to represent the ones you love. What a moment for Matthias.

Alexander Sarmiento no doing what it takes to become a champion in olympic lifting, THAT is impressing. they train harder than any other athletes. He wasnt fat because he was lazy, but because the extra weight allowed him to be stronger
Alexander Sarmiento yes, he lost about 45kg
+Alexander Sarmiento you need the extra mass so that when you hold the weight above your head it doesn't sway the body
+Alexander Sarmiento because he has retired and it's not healthy for the joints to take such weight for the whole life.
hey I do oly lift and atg squat and all those bs that most people consider as "activities hurting their joints". Being a overweight like this definitely put a lot of pressure on the joints and not limited to the joints.
Emotional story, such an inspiration

Greatest lift in history
Calum McLaughlin easily
500 kg deadlift by Eddie Hall.
@@unkreativ7491 the weight does not necessarely define a good lift
Plumcake Cat everything about eddie halls deadlift is perfect
Un Kreativ eddie pulled that weight for himself and had a lot less riding on it, this lift was for his wife and the memory of her, that alone has more riding on it than ANY ambition. Thats what i meant by the greatest lift in history. Eddie did it for ambition, Matthias did it for love
Off the charts inspiration and an incredible achievement , after the heart breaking loss of his wife.

Germany is the Pioneer of the ‘State-Sponsored’ Doping Programmes, which injected banned substance steroids or PEDs to their a few thousand of Olympic athletes and national team Footballers.(both of East and West Germany did it)
But most of People don’t know that
And Mathhias Steiner didn’t compete major weightlifting competitions for 3 years (since 2005 until early of 2008), because of his naturalization problem.
It would mean that he had absolutely used steroids during his break times, look at his body type today.
*P.S) He competed at 105kg- division in 2004 Olympics with represent Austria. At that time, his body weight was “104.35”kg, but 4 years later his body weight largely increased to “145.93”kg.*
As I said before, he ‘didn’t compete major Weightlifting competitions for 3 years (2005 ~ early 2008).
I strongly guarantee that he had used steroids like East&West German Weightlifters during his break times 🇩🇪🇩🇪💉
I think this is my favorite Olympics story of all time. I think about it a lot in my daily life. There are other athletes who have maybe overcome more adversity or come from less privileged backgrounds or stuff like that, and there's other athletes who were more dominant, maybe the GOATs of their sports like Bolt and Phelps, but this is the one that just keeps coming back to me. The story of losing his wife and then pushing through and winning, from behind, against the absolute BEST of the sport, in one last mammoth push that realistically he probably shouldn't have been able to do, but he did it, and he did it for her. It moves me more than any other sports moment ever has.
I cry every single time
it is so emotional
I know right, so inspirational

Matthias Steiners 258 kilo clean&jerk was one of the most emotional comeback lifts I have ever seen. The other one is ilya ilyins 242 kilo winning clean&jerk.
That specific day, a legend was born.
Never give up. 2008 was full of unexpected wins, and not just from the Germans. Paddy Barnes (Ireland, Boxing) has to be the best example. THIRD ALTERNATE in his weight class and he somehow makes it to Beijing where he proved he deserved that spot by winning an upset Bronze. Not just a great moment for Ireland, but for the entire English-speaking world. Americans, Canadians, Aussies, Kiwis, even the British were delighted by the plucky Irishman.
NEVER GIVE UP!

I see it the same way. With a story like Matthias Steiner's, it doesn't matter which country the person is competing for. The heart decides who deserves it the most. He would have been the champion of hearts even with bronze. Gold was of course the best ending to this story, which began so sadly.
