As a Japanese person, let me provide you with accurate information. It was not the emperor but Toyotomi Hideyoshi who banned Christianity. Hideyoshi, who effectively ruled Japan at the time, ended the Warring States period and unified Japan. The emperor resided in Kyoto and appointed Hideyoshi as the ruler, recognizing his governance over Japan. Aware that Japanese converts to Christianity were being taken overseas as slaves by Western merchants, Hideyoshi feared the enslavement of Japanese people and thus prohibited Christianity. At that time, many Western merchant ships coming to Japan were accompanied by missionaries, so many Japanese Christians were at risk of being taken away as slaves due to this background. Following this, Japan embarked on a policy of national seclusion and entered the Edo period. Today, Japan is often introduced as a rare country that, despite being an Asian nation, avoided colonization. This is likely due to efforts such as these by our ancestors. I don't dislike Christianity, but considering how many Asian countries became colonies of Christian nations during that era, I believe Japan's response was correct from the perspective of "protecting the Japanese people."
Japan wasn't going to be colonized through missionaries. That's ridiculous... Your country is not filled with social nihilism... Thanks to its rejection of Christ
Respect all religions, doesn’t matter if you are Christian, Shintoist or Buddhist. Respect all beliefs and it’s followers, because we are all brothers in this world. On the other hand, it wasn’t the emperor who ordered the killing and persecution of Christians, it was the Tokugawa shogunate.
As a Muslim, no one should be killed for their religion Edit: I don’t think anyone here understands, NO ONE should be killed for their beliefs, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity etc
@@harithainsworth1288The crusades are kinda justified because the Christians were losing Christian areas to Islam and Christian people were abused by other religions. The Government didn’t persecute them of their religion its cause they revolted lots. Basically the whole thing started when contact was made between Japan and Portugal. They started trading and Portugal send missionaries in Japan to spread the word of Christ. The Emperor didn’t mind this as the Christians weren’t doing anything and it helped relations with Europe which meant more trade. That was until the Europeans started being forceful. Also Japanese Christian’s started being violent even destroying important Pagan religious sites. Also with the adoption of Christianity Japanese culture started to collapse. A huge revolt happened which was the last straw. Christianity was banned and contact was cut between Japan and the Christian world. Except for the Dutch they were friends with Japan and didn’t force their religion. There are others reasons why Japan didn’t like Christianity one reason being that they feared being colonized by the Christians also the Emperor feared his people would prefer the Pope over him. It didn’t help that a lot of the Christians were racist
That man was defeated in battle and was publicly executed as well.... and it was not the Japanese emperor who hunted down christians and other religious groups but the Ruling Warlords themselves. This is false information. Takayama Ukon was a samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga (who himself was welcoming of Christians, but probably because it would mean that they would trade with him more and give him more power). After Toyotomi Hideyoshi (who was not the emperor) seized power at Yamazaki, he became increasingly weary of Christians and began persecuting them more and more, but never banned them as the Portuguese were a valued ally of Japan. Then Hideyoshi Died, and Tokugawa Ieyasu became Shogun after the climactic battle of Sekigahara. Ieyasu increased the persecution on Christians, causing Takayama Ukon to leave for the Philippines in 1614, where he died. It seems that Hideyoshi and Ieyasu were right to be weary of the Christians as a rebellion broke out in Shimabara against the Shogunate, lead by a boy named Akakusa Shiro. This rebellion was obliterated and Shiro was executed. This caused the Japanese to expel all foreigners from Japan (with the exception of the British and Dutch at Nagasaki port only). Anyone discovered to be a Christian would be severally punished and then executed. Japan went into 250 years of isolation. I don’t know why you are blaming the emperor, it should be important to note that during the time of the Samurai, the emperor had little military power and mostly religious power. The emperor was thought to be the descendant of the Japanese Goddess Ametaresu. And so he had great religious influence, you could compare him to the pope. It was in fact the emperor who when he eventually came back to power during the Meji Restoration in 1868, allowed Christians in hiding to practice their religion (again this was probably to appease the US who could give them resources, protection and power). If you have any other questions I’d love to answer them. However, was the massacre at Shimabara Justified? Kind of. They had just started a rebellion against the Tokugawa , and also were preaching something that would have broke the unity of Japan (just after it had been reunited) and also was openly speaking out against the emperor (which was one of the worst things you could do at the time). The rebellion was also a result of Portuguese Jesuits gaining more influence and control over Kyushu (Japan’s southernmost island) this was probably going to be used as a staging ground by the Portuguese for a conquest of Japan. Something the Tokugawa would not allow. And we have seen what atrocities the Portuguese have done when they have conquered regions. So was it kind of justified to get rid of them. I think so.
Bro they persecuted Japanese Christian’s OF COURSE those poor Christian’s would rebel ! What do you expect ?! Stop justifying slaughtering Christian’s ! How dare you ! It’s common sense, the oppressed rise up ! Portugese has nothing to do with jap Christian’s who just wanted religious freedom ! You hater !
@@NhacThanhCa-wn4wv Its quite difficult to summarise this, but i’ll try. Basically, The emperor was not in charge, but instead more of a religious figurehead similar to the pope. And Takayama Ukon was not some hero. He was a samurai who served under powerful Samurai Warlords. Eventually Christians became viewed as untrustworthy and began to be persecuted in Japan. Takayama Ukon then fled Japan and spent the rest of his days in the Philippines. The video is basically trying to make it sound like Takayama Ukon was some Christian, Samurai hero that defeated the emperor or something, which he was most certainly not.

From what I can find, for the most part, Japan was alright with Christianity and Catholicism arriving. Trouble started when news of forced conversion, kidnapping and burning of temples and homes reached the ear of the Shogun. At first the Shogun enforced punishment on the people who caused this and many jesuits also condemned the people who committed these crimes but let them keep practicing. It got worse when rumors of the jesuits kidnapping Japanese people and selling them into slavery, the camel's back broke when a rebellion led by a samurai wrecked a region. (Many of the jesuits tried to persuade the Samurai that it was not a good idea, but he didn't listen, or maybe he wanted to be powerful.) So then the persecutions began to happen.

There is quite a number of interesting figures of Non-Japanese descendant that became samurai, you can find some of them online. Prussia, Africa, English, Dutch, Korea and etc.
You do realize that Portuguese soldiers came and literally massacred entire villages of they didn’t submit to Christ. The original religion of japan was Buddhism. The samurai shown here, was only one of the thousands who were forced to submit to the Portuguese. Only he complied. And it wasn’t the “emperor” that was only a divine head of state. True power was held with the shogun. Who yes, stripped Christian clans of power. And it wasn’t just random samurai. Entire ass CLANS were demolished and rebuilt. Funny thing is, the Portuguese still traded with the Japanese after the Japanese put up a fight against their “holy crusade”. Also, when the Portuguese first landed, they immediately took to killing the Japanese after they saw a pagoda instead of a temple where they landed. And I’m not saying I hate Christians. Some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met are Christian. I’m just speaking facts, and this is a video that shouldn’t really be appreciated as such.

And again you don’t have to be of decent of another samurai, it was more like ranking, like the knights. Again refer to the example of Toyotomi Hideyoshi who went from peasant to ruler of all Japan.

I think so.
I find it scary how most people write comments here as if Jesus has come back
