Some district in Japan back in the days are associated with red light districts, Yakuzas, Slums etc.
However no matter how bad the scene was 30-50 years ago, theres always a niche or space where someone open up a good eateries. Plus times have changed and the environment has improved. Even the local japanese yakuza (if you are lucky to meet them) do not harass you anymore, just say hi if they (friendly yakuza) say hi to you first. Just dont ask them to see their tattoos or ask what happen to their pinkies. Be respectful and they will respect you. Other than that everything will be fine.
My only pet peeves are when theres african men who called themselves yakuza told me not to film or take photo where im walking in osaka. I just say sorry and walk away immediately but the african men still followed me until i join a big crowd then they back off and returned back to their alley.
