Yes, he plays guitar and piano, but oftentimes is just behind the mic. He has a live version of HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS, in San Diego, 1978 that’s awesome. Other great songs: SUN SPOT BABY, GET OUT OF DENVER, FIRE DOWN BELOW, STILL THE SAME, OLD TIME ROCK AND ROLL, AGAINST THE WIND, NIGHT MOVES, just to name a few. This is a rabbit hole you gotta grow down. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

A Bob Dylan quote that is apt for this video: “Some people say Bob is the poor man’s Bruce Springsteen but personality I always thought Bruce was the rich man’s Bob Seger. Love ‘em both though.”
There is a lot in common between these two legendary songwriters. They both have that signature gravelly husky voice. They both depict the working class values and struggles they grew up with. Arguably the greatest backup bands of 70s rock were Bruce’s E Street Band and Bob’s Silver Bullet Band. I love em both.

Seger and Bruce are friends, and when Bruce asked Bob for help in writing a breakthrough commercial hit album that didn't sell out his values, Bob encouraged him to just be himself but ease up on trying to be this "serious artist". The creative, uninhibited juices started flowing and "Born In The USA" came forth.

Bob Seger also plays the piano in all of his music. He is so talented. What a storyteller! He used to hang out with Jackson Browne and the songwriters from "The Eagles", Glen Fry, J.D Souther and Don Henley. Imagine being a part of that group. Some of the greatest musical Storytellers of our time.

Bob Seger is from Ann Arbor, Michigan, about 40 miles west of Detroit. Graduated from my high school. Started out as a popular regional star in the Midwest with hits like “Heavy Music”, and “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man”. Forming the Silver Bullet Band in 1973, he broke out nationally with the album Live Bullet (1976), recorded live with the Silver Bullet Band in 1975 at Cobo Hall in Detroit. I saw him three times. The first time, in 1970, he did an all acoustic show at Hill Auditorium on the University of Michigan campus. The first half was performed on a grand piano, the second on acoustic guitar. Next was a concert in the early 1980’s at an outdoor venue that was then called Pine Knob Music Theater, well outside of Detroit in suburban Clarkston Township. Finally, I saw him perform at the MGM Grand on the Strip in Las Vegas. All were great shows (he doesn’t do anything less), but his performance in the small venue of the acoustically perfect Hill Auditorium is my special favorite, having occurred well before he broke out nationally. Further down the comment thread are listed some of Seger’s greatest music. Explore his catalogue. It will be time well spent. Enjoy! Forgot something! The song is actually about Ann Arbor’s Main Street. Back in 1967 or so, some enterprising business man found a loophole in the city zoning laws and opened a small club downtown that featured “exotic dancers”. A large segment of the town was outraged and demanded its closure. It took some time to do so. While it was open, it was there that Bob encountered his “young and sweet” dancer. The pool halls were located close by on Ann Street. Clint’s Club was one of them. For a small college town, the block long area was considered fairly seedy. It was the area for those “hustlers and losers” he wrote about. Hope you find the local history and background info for the song of interest.

Another one you should check out is Rosalie written about the programmer at the local radio station "THE BIG 8" CKLW in Windsor Ontario where ALL the BIG acts got their air time if they were good and a lot of them were! There is a documentary about this station where IT ruled North American airwaves in the 70's and 80's. Rosalie was the program director and she had an ear for great artists and Bob was one of them along with KISS, Alice Cooper and many of the MOTOWN greats.

One (out of many) of his best. In my nearly 60 years of listening to Rock-n-Roll music, there are very few bands/performers that, in my opinion, have never put out a bad song. The Warning is one example, and Bob Seger is another. If you've never heard him...his album "Night Moves" would be a great place to start.

    • @McFlySwatter

I agree. The rhythm section who played with Bob on this at Muscle Shoals had a lot to do with this songs success as well as "Bob's "Old Time Rock and Roll" and so many other hits. When you look at a list of the songs they played on it just blows your mind. They played with so much soul on records like "Mustang Sally" by Wilson Picket, "Respect" by Aretha Franklin, and "When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge, that other artists were often shocked to find out they were four white guys. If you haven't seen the "Muscle Shoals" documentary it is outstanding and I highly recommend it.

Excellent reaction to Bob seger who can't love this man it's got the voice that speaks to everyone. Also like the flag in the background. I lived in a land that was the exact opposite of your flag can you figure that one out it's even the same name as yours

Have to agree that he and Springsteen have that smoky silk feel to their voices. Can't get enough of it. :)

Bob Seger was mandatory listening in every strip club across America in the late 70s early 80s. "Watch Her Strut" was a favorite of all the dancers.

Tom Cruise did his famous dance in "Risky Business" to Bob Seeger song; now there is a pizza commercial that recreates that scene.

Bob Seger was awesome.....if my memory is correct, and if I'm not having another "senior moment"...Bob was from Detroit, home of some great music long before Eminem, and he recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.....a recording studio that did so many greats...one of my favorites, Aretha Franklin recorded some of her greatest music there....thanks for this!!!

Simply a genius who has lived and lived and lived. And, yes, please do Turn the Page. A consummate storyteller, it's as if he's taken the heart of America and put it to music.

Bob Seger had a lot of hits, but I think this is my favorite of his. Just a really pretty melody, beautiful vocal and sweet guitar riff.
