She makes it look like she's just a joyful kid playing around on the bars. Her swing, handstands, transitions, and that dismount looks so effortless and light.

In case anyone is interested, what happened that day was this: some of the gymnasts who went before her in her group on bars scored 9.9 and Olga Korbut scored 9.95. When Nadia got up and did the exercise you see here, there was only one score the judges could give after the previous scores they had given and that was 10. However, it was utterly perfect according to the code at that time and should have had that score anyway. I never tire of watching this routine!
my FAVORITE part about this was her dismount. She looked like a beautiful bird going out of that flip. These days those kinds of interactions bar to bar that she did can't happen because the bars are now farther apart. People do harder stuff now, and she and others of her era admit that, but...for what she did...PERFECT.

The dismount was just something else! An eye-popping moment lol. The female gymnasts today are extremely talented and have technically demanding routines, but I've yet to see someone who has the beautiful flow and grace of Comaneci or Korbut.
To my Peapack-Gladstone classmates, class of 1976. There was, as well, another class of 1976 and her name was Nadia! Who will ever forget that performance?
So interesting how much the sport has changed since then The athletes today don't have nearly the thin and willowy "ballet aesthetic" these girls did--they're allowed to bulk up and build muscle to fly higher and farther. Not that these girls didn't work out or train as world-elite athletes: it's just that Gabby Douglas could probably have snapped one of them in half with the strength of her thighs alone.
Whats interesting is that people seem to think they are on the same level as international judges, but there not, so idunno why they feel they need to comment.

back then hops were permitted upon landing, and she doesn't hit the bar with her leg watch it in .25 speed the bar doesn't move its just the camera angle

Oh, and what kept the memories of this Olympics was when our our very own, Trinidad and Tobago's Hasley Crawford won the men's 100 metres Final in 10.06 to give us our first (and still) GOLD Medal! ... and the honor to be named the "fastest human in the whole wide world!"
I adore Nadia, this routine shows how difficulty is sqeezing the beauty out of the sport, why? I did see a tiny hop on the landing, but she deserved all her 10's! Nastia is the most beautiful gymnast of current times, but look at the injuries some she sustained in her career, & her feet always cross a bit on triple fulls, b/c it's impossible to have both that level of grace & beauty and the power of a Carly Patterson, who is beautiful in her own way, but why sqeeze all the Nastia's out? A truly beautiful gymnast w/true grace has become a thing of the past. I wish it were a art, like professional dancers, so that gymnasts could make a living instead of dying w/the end of the prepubescent body, & people would pay to see the beauty of dance combined w/ acrobatic skills. Gymnasts are unique from other athlete's in so many ways, not the least of which only 1 every 4 yrs has a CHANCE of ever making a penny, to offset the high cost of training, Jaycee Phelps said her family was paying off credit card debt 10 yrs after Atlanta, where she was part of the Magnificent Seven, the only US team to get ever get a gold AA medal.......what???? Irina Baraksonova is a truly beautiful gymnast from the 80's, her extension is ......otherworldly. She wiped out on beam once & never broke form, even when she messes up, she's beautiful to watch! !
Brian Merritt I heard something about Olgas routine having elements that where too dangerous at that time... or something like that. That exercise was not approved by the commissions.
I love that the board said a 1.00 because they hadn't ever seen a 10 before and it wasn't programmed to make a 10
No I think thats because they mark it from 0.0 to 1, so if someone gets a 9 then the score is 0.9

the score was only programmed to 9.99 and not to 2 digit numbers. The hitghest score to date before this was 9.95.
