Episode 76
Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos is one of the most unique experiences on the NES, but it certainly doesn't hold your hand. You're dropped right into a mysterious castle with little instruction on what to do next. The many rooms you'll explore are filled with puzzles, and to solve them you'll need cleverly manipulate objects in the environment. If you enjoy the puzzle solving elements of a game like The Legend of Zelda, this one is definitely worth a try!
Few games on the NES give the player so much freedom to explore. To win, you'll need to find the six pieces of the Staff of Demnos, but how you get them is up to you! For an even deeper experience, getting 100% completion on this game requires you to visit all 252 rooms, and collect every hidden item!
So how did this amazing game get made? In today's episode we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* How to access ALL 252 ROOMS!
* A SECRET CODE that can give you UNLIMITED LIVES AND POTIONS!
* EASY solutions for EVERY PUZZLE!
* Tips and tricks for using the game's POTION SYSTEM!
* Secret SHORTCUTS that make finding pieces of the Staff easy!
* Where to find TONS of EXTRA LIVES!
* SPECIAL TECHNIQUES for using boxes and other objects to solve puzzles!
* Where to find EVERY STAFF PIECE, KEY, POTION and ITEM so you can get 100%... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

There were few things more mysterious as a kid than knowing that a seemingly impossible NES game had an ending programmed into the cartridge that you would never see.
I agree
ikr wtf?
the crazy thing is that FINAL FANTASY 1 uses MORE than basic NES chips, the basic NES coding does NOT allow one to code on a cart FF1 with the basic nes composition... I was appallaed when I learned that so I understood I should focus on learning SNES coding and forget NES since all NES games further than launch are not possible with the core tech. Likewise, Gameboy games had such a progress when the 3D concept was brought up by those UK dudes of DOOM.
So true, also a bit sad to see how little I mastered this game. 😂 But the memories brought me back...
The title screen music is epic!
Amazing game! The title theme for this game is one of the best ever. I used to just sit at the title screen and listen to it for ages.
I've managed to speed run this game in under 6 minutes fairly consistently because Ive played it so often. Definitely not an easy game but one of the most memorable.
I have often wondered how gamers today would react to games that we grew up with. Hard, no continues, nothing would get me so mad as the bounce back from being hit in the old games…still does. Lol. your channel is the best gaming one out there. Looking forward to saturdays thx brother
I was a kid during the NES/SNES days and I've got modern gamer kids now. I have done what I can to introduce them to the classics.
It seems like the graphics are the thing that turns them off the most. Certain classics still kind of hold up to them like Mario 2 and 3 are fine but Mario 1 is a no-go.
As far as the difficulty, they get frustrated with the same parts that we did except the difference is that instead of having 5 games and you're already sick of 4 of them, they've got access to a practically unlimited amount of games so they just exit and play something else.
My youngest son did beat Mega Man 11 by himself (on baby mode) and he was very proud of himself. I think that game is a pretty good bridge between old school and modern games.
@@CeeJayThe13th agreed 100%. The same here. We have a Nintendo classic and snes classic. They do like them but grow out of them too. I’m gonna guess they’ll stay with my wife and I when they move out. Lol
Games of NES were the challeges to face. Even with it "looks" easy, wrong. I still enjoy those games to this day
They'd be upset over not having access to all of the games "content", which by paying for it they feel entitled to. Video games aren't toys meant to challenge their developing minds anymore, but are now considered a legitimate form of narrative expression. It is more important that a game deliver writing, character development, and world building that would get a Netflix original series cancelled in it's first season than offer an interactive challenge and if they can't see how the story ends just because they couldn't solve some stupid puzzle that only nerds have the time to think about or beat some boss that actually requires knowledge of how the gameplay works then it's unfair and borderline ablist. Video games must offer what every other medium can do far, far better while minimizing what actually justifies their very existence.
@@mattl1758 I mean I would be glad to keep those lol
this man need an award for his good deeds
This is one of the best puzzle adventures on the NES platform and its title screen track is second to none! Thanks for showing this tragically underrated beauty! Solstice is still one of my prized gaming possessions after all this time.
Its the most polished game on NES. Consider the alternatives: Abadox and Bayou Billy!!!!
Great choice! A misunderstood gem that doesn’t get much attention. Look forward to rediscovering this adventure and finishing it myself with the help of this guide!
This is the first new game I remember. All other games we had before, I just remember always being there. I came down to the basement to find my dad and brother looking at this, fresh out of the box.
One of the things that stuck with me was reading the manual over and over. The little story adds so much flavor and motivation, not to mention giving a general description of the layout. (btw, it's Stonehedge Gardens, not Stonehenge Gardens) A wonderful game for exploration!
Another note is that this game was made for PAL. Tim Follin has said that the music was supposed to be heard at that speed, and the game takes on a more methodical feel.
Yessss
...been asking so long for this. If you have guides and all that, it can be all done quickly. On your own, it was tough...and creepy. The shreik when the robe collapses, it still haunys me.
as well as the feet-like monsters I would say XD
The sequel is cool it has more of a fantasy theme and the music is really sparse and trippy. The music never resets when you die which is cool you notice that
the music constantly resetting when you die causes anxiety and stress
As many hours as I played this as a kid you'd never suspect it can be beaten, let alone 100% completed in half an hour lol. Another old puzzle game I loved was Solomon's Key, I'd love to see you play through it one day!
Solomon's Key is a excellent game. The problem with that game was my mom discovered it back in the day and she got hooked and my sister and I were not allowed to play Nintendo until she was done which was over a week. I still play the game quite often.
@@yogidemis8513 My mother was super addicted to Solomon's Key too!
Solomon's Key was good but mind numbingly difficult.
Sounds like my brother. lol
I LOVE SOLSTICE.
This is like my quintessential childhood game (which I was never able to beat)
The music is sooooo incredible. I was finally able to beat it (no cheating!) Many years later... it's soooo epic and hard af
I remember playing a pre-release version of this at the Nintendo Powerfest 1990. It was clearly overshadowed by other games that came out around the same time, namely Castlevania III, Double Dragon II, and Super Mario Bros. 3.
This game I could never beat. I'm gonna drink a nice crown and Coke and watch this when the family goes to bed. This is a personal watch haha
Now you're making me want a full playthrough and guide for Solomon's Key!
Perfect game for this channel
@@OHG_Fawx My thoughts exactly. 👍🏻
Also Equinox.
And its sequel, which I think was just called Solomon's Key 2 everywhere but NA, where its name was Fire 'n Ice. And Equinox, which is this game's sequel for the SNES!
Another good fit would be Mighty Bomb Jack, the full ending for that is ludicrous.
Ive given this one a shot on several occasions, but i ended up lost most of the time lol. This guide definitely helps on some of the most unforgiving areas
the trick was to create a map with paper and pencil
OMG I love this game. It was such a mysterious game that none of my friends knew about back in the day.
Phew, have this one! Trying to collect all the games you have reviewed CIB, I think I only have 15 left to go as of last night.
This was a favorite, my buddy and I would record ourselves playing this...on VHS lol.
Such a beautiful game; I'm glad to see you cover it.
I've never heard of this game but Equinox came to mind immediately. Now I know it's roots.
This is so up my alley. I played Solstice a lot as a child and I was hoping to revisit it. Thanks for the upload!
Super good run. So much for attempting to beat this game back in the days.
Such pain, but enjoyable to watch a full clear and how clever mechanics you have to do to get through certain room.
Thanks to your guide and advice, I was finally able to finish Solstice, one of my childhood game!
I've been waiting for this! Thank you so much, this brings back so many memories
I love how you can solve this game in so many ways. You're doing most things I do but in reverse it's nuts! Well done haha
Omg you make that look easy. We'll, I'll give it another try. It's been many years but I still have the game. Thank you!
Yay, I wanted u to adress this game for so long! This brings back memories. Thank you sir, I really really enjoyed watching
This is a game that I played when I was a kid. I was finally able to beat it while in high school. Thank you for covering this game. Also, I never knew about the infinite lives/potions code (didn't have Nintendo Power growing up), so that would have made things far easier.
You good sir have earned yourself a subscriber.
I really appreciate it when you just crush games I've never heard of or seen before.
I absolutely love the way you do your walkthroughs. I've spent hours watching your videos and can't wait to see more.
Looking forward to when you do the NES ports of Wizardry, Might and Magic, and the niche dungeon adventure Swords and Serpents. All of them can benefit from your thorough and enduring style.
Another great video!! I think my new favourite part is the "Alllllll Riiiiiiight...." when you start up the game.
I first encountered this game at Nintendo World Championship/Expo 1990, along with Crystalis. I got to try both games out there and bought Crystalis later that year. I ended up missing out on Solstice for a little while longer, but it did end up in my collection eventually. It and its SNES spiritual successor Equinox are on my list of games to finally beat if/when I retire in a few decades. :)
😮 I played this game when I was a kid and couldn't remeber the name of it for the life of me, I literally have been looking for it for years, but here it is, thank you so much
I spent years playing this game as a kid, I loved it. I could finish it with no trick or code but never completed the game 100%! thanks for sharing this video it was a blast!
we're back! thanks again. this is a Follin muisc game I believe. MMMM mmm them tunes
Awesome! Another hidden gem that had passed me by. I knew of Solstice, but somehow never played it during the NES's heyday.
Always saw this for rental at the video store. Never did rent it though.
This doesn't need a LIKE button, it needs a LOVE button! Loved the award-winning title music music and the atmosphere of this game when it first came out. Always made it to the final tower, but couldn't get up there without the Game Genie!
I had never played this game, and scantly remember it from my memories, but I enjoy this channel so much I’ve watched anyway. One thing I do remember is loving Tim Follin’s magic with the 8-bit music, most especially in Taito’s SkyShark, and I am over here JAMMING to this game’s music. It’s so unorthodox and I can’t easily box it into a certain genre, but I’m digging it!
Still have my 2 copies. Love this video you made. Documentary of one of my favourites. I made a map of this game when I was a child.
Aaaagh, been waiting for this one! Solstice is dope and some of the BEST music on the NES.
I've been waiting for you to do a video on this game!! It was one of my childhood favorites!!
Great job. i always lobved the music in this game and to me it was the saving grace for me. I also got lost half the time as well. great job
I've watched every video. This one the music is very sedating. This is literally the first one to put me to sleep. This isn't negative. I needed sleep, but I am saying it for those that have trouble sleeping this is a good video.
Wow. I remember this game only from Nintendo Power, and a friend of mine having it. I always wanted to get it, but never did. This was a true blast from the past. Thanks for picking this one.
I may have to search my Raspberry Pi and see if it is on there this morning.
Thank you for sharing; I'd never heard of this and it seems right up my alley. The soundtrack is great, too.
This was one of my first games, I must've been about 5, it was way too hard but wow what a memorable game
I remember I had the choice between this and Shadowgate at a Toys R Us. I picked this because I remember Nintendo Power had the unlimited lives code. I never got very far even with that, but I'm still glad I picked this one instead.
I loved this game it feels like Metroid since youre totally alone with no characters to talk to. Also Shadax looks exactly like the ULTIMATE WIZARD on C64 which was
my first videogame and still is awesome
All right! I've been waiting for this one.
The damn spikes disappear to a hidden room. No wonder I could never get 100%
My brother, sister and I somehow got really close to beating this game on our own, using just trial and error. Thans for showing me the ending!
Owned this games a kid. Soundtrack is timeless and amazing!!!!
Wow, this looks brutal! I know kid me could have at least finished it, though not 100% it, but adult me stands no chance. Great Job!
Boy, that's a cheat code.
Anyway, never tried this game, but it does look interesting.
Also, thanks to you I managed to beat DuckTales and MegaMan 3 this week, always appreciated!
I wonder, do you show your own playthroughs with these games? if so, thank you for taking the time to truly master these games for your playthroughs... that's a lot of work! well done
I always figured Kylo the dog does all the playing, this guy just narrates. :)
I'm glad Tim Follin's returned to composing for games, I've always liked his early work.
I loved this kind of games. Rented this one once as a kid but never figured out of to properly play it. Not having the manual and not mention in game magazines (where I lived) was an issue too.
This is the kind of games this channel is excellent for!
Other already mentioned, but Solomon’s Key would be an excellent addition.
Maybe also Moai-kun/Moai kid.
I was reaching the point where I thought this game was a figment of my imagination. Thank you for showing this!!
I used to LOVE this game as a kid! It was a huge pain to beat as a kid.
You just made me remember to buy EQUINOX for SNES the action adventure isometric dungeon game I NEVER tried more than seconds on emulator... and the follow-up to SOLSTICE !
The first time I witnessed the ending of this game was when I was 8 and sister beat it. No walk through just pure memory. Thanks to this video I finally completed it myself!!
Love seeing a new upload from you. Would LOVE to see you do Sweet Home!
1) I remember seeing ads for this game when I was a kid and thinking that 200+ rooms would be the ultimate challenge. I never got the game because it was either always sold out or way too expensive, so it's an awesome hit of nostalgia to see that the game is actually relatively short.
2) I love the increasingly Quagmire-esque readings of "All riiiiiight!" at the start of each game.
3) Turns out there's a second way to kill Morbius. You just have to cast Jared Leto.
Gotdayum, that wizard jacked out the frame!
How have I never heard of this one?
Ahh.... it was nice to see you crush this game. I could never beat it as a kid.
I haven't put much time into this game. Great video as always
I have always been curious what you doing this game would look like. Always amazing content sir, thank you,
I swear you pick the games that have the asthetics and atmosphere I'm most fond of; if I were doing the channel, The game choices would be almost identical to yours.
I've always wanted to check out Solstice, it looks so cool, a contained labyrinth with every room having its own puzzle .
There was a side-scrolling game like that called Castle Quest for NES. Really difficult, puzzle in each room, worth checking out if you get the chance.
I agree. I knew this channel was special when he played through Legacy of the Wizard in one of his earlier uploads as a smaller channel. I wouldn't even be surprised if he did a video on Ultima Exodus at some point
Every video keeps getting better Kylo!
You mentioned Rock n Roll racing... an absolute fav for me on the SNES.
This was one of my brother's favorite games growing up. I was more of a clash at demonhead kind of kid. Thanks you can beat
I've always wanted to try this game, it reminds me of my favourite Genesis game "Landstalker"
You mean landstalker looks like this game
@@burntyper No, I mean what I said. I said "reminds me" not "looks like".
Your skill overshadows just how difficult the platforming can be in this game.
I loved this game - the soundtrack was one of my favorite parts
This one is under rated. Really fun to explore the world they put together, and the soundtrack definitely enhances it
Your dog is so kind to let you dive into his (her?) game collection.
This had to have been a tough one for you. Great work as always!
I tried this game as a kid and found it really confusing, then gave up. I then tried Hydlide from the same uncle's game collection and instantly loved it.
very cool that you covered this game.
Another excellent choice! Keep up the fantastic work!
If you ever run out of Nintendo games there's plenty of good obscure computer games from back in the day as well.
Dude I beat this game back in the mid-90's, so great to see some love for this game. It's fucking amazing. Equinox was even better, but I love this game to death. You could just start playing and over the course a few days figure out how to beat it, so classic.
Also I'm like 99% sure I didn't find all the rooms and 100% the game, just beat it and got an ending. That was the best you could hope for back in the NES days.
This game always mystified me.
Thank you for making this!
Very good choice. This was an old favorite of mine.
I just bought this game because of you thanks for the walk through
I remember the Equinox ads in GamePro and EGM showing the kid becoming an old man and never finishing the game. His nephew/grandkid skipped the funeral to conquer more of the land. Watching this tells me it's cryptic nature might actually take more than one generation to 100%
D'oh!!
Omg this game was so unique and hard I loved it
Omg thank you for doing this video thank you if love your channel is love watching you show me how to beat video games thanks man
Yes, one of my favorite games from the NES
Oh snap he's playing it guys! I still remember how hard this game was until I learned a couple of tricks related to jumping and refilling potions.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention. That double jump technique is actually an infinite jump technique if you are skilled enough. Some runner literally flew across a room during a speed run.
I love this game, but I never managed to beat it. Now I have the opportunity to get my revenge. Thank you very much!
I love the music so much nostalgia!
Now I finally have the knowledge to finally beat this game!
I went back and picked up a copy of this one 14 years ago and beat it. I still think it's a good game.
I love these games and your videos are great
Another one I beat thanks to you keep ‘em coming
"And in this cave we will find a blue potion."
I could just hear you making air quotes when you said blue.
Watched my mom play this when I was a kid. I couldn't figure it out. This video should be awesome.
You're an NES master. Period.
I loved this game as a kid. As an adult the in game theme is my favorite to play on my bass
Another great video. I enjoyed this game as a kid, though The Immortal later topped it, imho, in the realm of isometric games for nes. Maybe sometime we'll see a vid for that or the even better genesis version! Thanks as always!
This game was way over my head as a kid.
Follin bros are legends in the game music industry.
check out the "spider man and x men in arcade's revenge" soundtrack on SNES if you dont believe me.
This game reminds me of Light Crusader on the Genesis! I would love to see you do a video on that game!
Yes I loved this game. That seems to be what I say every Sunday on this channel. :) Not the exact same game but I liked Dark Savior on the Saturn too.
