I loved your reactions to these episodes too. The fandom spent 18 months imagining what Ed and Stede's reunion would be like but no one imagined we'd get a what we ended up getting. So much love for David Jenkins and the writers for that. And I absolutely adore the end of the fourth episode. One of the things I really wanted from the second season during the hiatus was for Buttons to continue to be portrayed as a canon witch and they went for it 😅

i was crying as soon as stede's grieving face appeared on the escaping ship. and cried harder watching your reaction to ed's drowning and the mermaid scene. i loved seeing you laugh and smile at merstede's appearance. it's silly, then tender and touching and it's a joy to see every emotion cross your face. and even though i've seen this episode 100 times by now, it's fresh again watching along with you! thanks for sharing your true reactions!
Remember how at the end of 1.3 Stede was near death before Ed rescued him from hanging, and Stede kept seeing images of his family and not finding them comforting? I love that when Ed's life is flashing before his eyes here, he gets a highlight reel that's all times he spent with Stede, and it's clear that even when he's not yet aware Stede's there, just the memories of him are enough comfort that his face relaxes and brightens. That gets me every time.
This show's treatment of grief- esp. at the end of s1 and beginning of s2- is amazing to me. I do bereavement assistance for people who've recently lost a loved one, and what gets people stuck is not feelings themselves, but not having safe space / time to experience and share those feelings. (Like, having a first mate who thinks that open expression of grief is a fate worse than death.) I've been recommending the show to other people I know who work in hospice and chaplaincy as an examination of how toxic masculinity makes grief harder to move through, and also how powerful sitting vigil for someone who's near death- as Stede does- can be (because it's important for people near death to be reminded that they are loved and will be missed, and people can hear / feel familiar voices and touch long after they can no longer respond).
Also: I love that in the scene where the reunited crew is literally at each other's throats, the lighting is reminiscent of a Dutch masters painting. It's the same light as we get in the scene Jim recalls as "the good old days," and it makes me think, "Yeah, they're all messed up right now, but they will work this out."

Ed has some grievances here. Stede has some abandonment issues -- when things get too much for him, he abandons his partner.
