Steel bike vs. brand new Tour de France climbs: A Shoddy investigation

- Living in the French Alps you'd think that I'd climbed all the monumental mountain passes that the Tour de France has been routed up and over in its 100 plus years. Well, to be honest, I haven't. The Alps can be a touch of a dog to get about at times; it's far from a quick drive to head from here in Annecy to the mountain range's deepest corners. I'll admit I've ticked off a fair few, but there's still plenty to scrub off the list. And that's where my lastest idea sprung from. That, and the desire to test a new Ritchey Logic disc.

Your videos are awesome, Shoddy! Can't wait to see the rest of your mini series, and awesome bike build!
Love this video, I love the mix of modern and classic, its what drove me to build my own Fairlight Strael with Di2. Looking forward to seeing the followup.

Oh Dave your videos are always a great start to the day !
Shoddy makes any bike look flash, and that Ritchey looks extra flash.
The most beautiful bike I have probably ever seen. Just Wow, would never have thought of Ritchey. Iconic...
Nice video and assembly. It's always a pleasure to put the hands on bike frames with external cable routing. I enjoyed filming my young son putting together my Road Logic Disc. Amazing experience!
That’s a new classic. Sweetness.
It's certainly up their in the nice bike stakes.
Such and understated build, but yet so good!
I sure wish I had something like this built up in my collection. That gives me an idea for my next road bike though!
Also, this is exactly how I would build up a bike (maybe minus the disc brakes)
Essentially a “sleeper” bike as some may know it as
I built one last year with the blue rim version. Beautiful and light (7.8kg without pedal) . Absolute fan of Ritchey now.
Who wouldn't be a fan :) - Dave
Surely a Seven 622SLX would fill the bill. But kudos to that Ritchey - v.understated.Living the dream there Dave!
Trying to live the dream 😉
Great video Shoddy. Good luck with your project mate!
Only found you on CZcams a while back. Enjoying your vids. The bike looks really nice
Awesome video like always. Ritchey Logic Disc Road - what a great bike!
Nice one Dave, the bike looks lovely. Looking forward to the videos.
I’ve had a Ritchey Logic road bike since 2014. I wouldn’t swap it for anything else.
You can climb any of those climbs with a cheaper bike, if it has proper gearing and you get those carbs in. anyhoo, thanks for bringing these videos.
regards from Lisbon.
you are living in heaven
That's an awesome build right there.
I ride a 2017 Battaglin steel, few weeks ago climbed 11% to 15% average mountain passes no probs, it's the motor that matters the most, extra 1.5-2kg of static weight isn't much of a penalty.
I like the look of the limited edition Battaglins that they are making this year - dave
@@VeloVeloVeloTV Agree, the Portofino is a work of art.
Good day Lucky Cyclist! :- ) Do you mind telling us the weight of this Fantabulous Ritchey bike? Thank you! Cheers!
I was suppose to weight it the other day, I'll do it and include it in the next vid..I promise
Sweet looking bike.....
Great video, good series 👍🏼
I hope you continue to provide some news about this bike because I am really interested in getting that frameset and building it up.
Tom Sturdy custom Ti road bike.. 3d printed Ti and can easily be sub 7kg 👌🙌
Had a road logic rim and it was awesome. I actually wish I didn't sell it. I may get another in time.....
That jersey is proper "AG2R brown" 😂
Looks better on the flesh...honest. It's grown on me too. But I can understand why people wouldn't like it. 👍
De merde
Love it Dave!
How'd you get that bartape so grubby already?! Come on man!
I'm an expert and grubbyness!!
Considering a lightweight carbon frame + fork would save you 1.5 kilos - If Shoddy weights 60, this means ~2% slower on the climbs. He'll manage ;)
I wish I was 60kg, back in my race days I was just a touch over that.
Frame 1790 g + fork 377 g according to Ritchey, that's just 1 kg more than a very light CF climbing bike.
It's just that Force groupset that's a bit on the portly side. - dave
Annecy looks amazing.
It's OK I suppose 😉
Love ❤️ Ritchey. Grouse
Bike looks amazing!
I'm liking it for sure, and it grows on me eery time I throw my leg over it. - dave
what da weight is?
You'll have to wait for the next vid. Top secret
Hi Shoddy, beautiful area, sweet steel build, question, did you build the 55 or 57cm Ritchey? I am just shy of 183cm tall and deciding on the 55 or 57, any thoughts? Thanks, Steve
I built the 55. I'm 179cm, I run a 120mm stem. I'd say go the 57 as you'd have a ton of post out. It's a daamn nice bike, but I'd head to your local dealer, they should be able to help better. You'll love it, I'm sure - Dave
Love the idea, Shoddy. Steel is real!
Do Titanium vs bikes of the tour!
I like that idea. I remember when Lotto used to ride Lightspeed in the early 2000's. - Dave
Dave - what helmet are ya in while riding to the shop on your kid hauler bike? In the market for a new one. Thanks!
It's a new Met lid. I love it. Check out this vid as I talk about it. It's surprising how often I reach for it as I've a few kids worth way more than it. Highly recommended. czcams.com/video/MtC16iQ_2P8/video.html
@2:18 he said 34/46 for the crank but it shows 33 not 34.
surely that frame is not a couple of kg heavier ? must be well under 2kg prob about 1600 g and the lightest carbon at 700 g ish, Should of had a nice cabon stem and bars added, I have them on all my steel and ti bikes.
The grouper isn't the lightest out there. It's a bit heavy so that adds to it.
Steel bike... with carbon fork, wheels and seatpost (not sure about the crankset... but likely carbon too). Some carbon bikes have less carbon than this one 😅
Still, that's a super, SUPER nice build you have here!
Sure is a fancy machine, a fair bit of carbon. But you've got to give me some leeway ;) - dave
Hiya Dave, you lucky man. Bet that bike's still not heavy, I'm guessing 8.6kg
I'll let everyone know on the next vid. Top secret
King cages?
No, the new Ritchey stainless ones. And they're pretty damn nice -Dave
What bracket did you use to attach the front derailleur?
Would choise Chorus
I want more shoddy videos
Wait, wait , wait. there's more to come. Roll on the TDF - Dave
Can anybody share the brand/model of bottle cages fitted to the bike, ploise?
They're the new Ritchey steel cages. I'm impressed by them. - dave
Awesome. I’m in Annecy for three weeks from the beginning of August would love to get a ride in and find out some tips. Plus that bike looks the business :-)
You'll love it here. I'm away for the first two but will be back mid-aug. Shoot me a message
@@DavidEverettshoddycycling will do.
So... how much does it weight ?
Beautiful! What is the weight of the build?
What bottle cage is that?
Came here to ask the same
They're the new Richey steel ones. They've a better grip than the Hulk.
Disc brakes really spoilt the look of the bicycles. it truly is the biggest gimmick in the history of bicycles. it is really sad.
Yeah, and those integrated shifters, worse than down tube friction shifting. Carbon rims? Nah, steel's what you need.
You're like a jilted girlfriend. You have to move on buddy.
@@JPMoron it is because of sheep like you. The marketing people get rich. Use your head. Don't follow like sheep
Shouldn't have sold my steel race bike
I agree 😉
