  • MONARK aims to appease Shin Megami Tensei and Persona fans alike, whilst also adding its own flavor to the mix. Unfortunately, it fails to achieve its goals in more ways than one.

Hey All. Hope you enjoyed the Review. Let me know what you thought here along with you plans regarding playing or avoiding Monark. Also as an addendum, I have heard it runs pretty badly on consoles with PS4 in particular having a lot of issues. Despite requesting multiple codes for console versions, I was only provided a PC code by the publisher so I was unable to check this myself but it might be worth looking in to if you want to play on console :)

This was a really great review! I’m shocked it doesn’t have more views! Also I love that Tales of Arise recognition!

What's most confusing about the visual quality of the game is that both the cinematics and the art direction are great (at least from what I've seen in videos and screenshots), so it's not like they lack good 3D artists or animators (unless those were all outsourced). So I wonder if it's the engine that hasn't been updated or if they simply lack the budget to optimize everything.

Yeah, the cinematics are definitely a mark up in quality from the general gameplay and the environments are very copy paste. May have been a budgetary thing like you say. Hard to tell :/

The combat in JRPGs, or 'Dragonquestlikes' to be more specific, is usually something that tends to bore me to tears. SMT is one of the few to break that trend. The fact that spamming your highest damage attacks isn't the best strategy 100% of the time in them is likely the reason. Adding some tactical movement on top of that and preventing overleveling sounds like a winning formula but the more Persona inspired additions probably make this a no go for me. Not that I mind the more social aspects but they tend to be a massive sink for time I don't really have anymore. At least not unless it's something I'm really invested in, Fate/Extra CCC, I'm looking at you. Hurry up and get a translation already!
    Love the review, as always!

Only played the demo so far, but this game does seem like a rather odd mixture of ideas, which I guess is to be expected from ex-SMT staff taking a stab their own property. That had to take that first step someday, and they likely just need to keep trying until they get it right. Hopefully their next game will prove to be a bit better. Good video!

Thanks man. Yeah I agree. I really wanted to like this one but it just felt a little too lacking in too many areas. Hopefully as you say their next game will be better.
Also great work on the FE Fates video by the way! That was some undertaking! Awesome stuff! :D

Whoa, this got released already? Shame it turned out less than stellar - the announcement trailer reminded me of Caligula Effect and some of those (by now mostly forgotten) tactical JRPGs that were released on the PS Vita back in the day and not to knock those games, but that didn't exactly give me the highest of hopes for this project.

For sure. Its a real shame.
Also the game isn't out yet. It comes out on the 22nd Feb :)

Another great review. Shame, sounds like cool gameplay with another generic plot.

Thanks Jim. Yeah, its a real shame. The combat is solid and the game has some great ideas, but unfortunately its not enough to save it :/
