  • With the best season of the year upon us once again, let's take a little time to talk about DontNod's Vampyr. A great vampire simulator with ambition, some questionable combat and more than a little jank.

Vampyr is a hauntingly beautiful work of art with an amazing thought-out concept of actions and consequences like I've never seen before. There are, however, certain gameplay mechanics, which weren't mentioned in this review, but are crucial to the game's overall experience. For example the constant need for the player to scavenge for resources which are used for crafting all sorts of healing items for the people of each district. And they are CONSTANTLY ill, especially if you kill one of them, the next day after you've upgraded Jonathan's skills, as a consequence, nearly half of all people you oversee, fall ill. And some illnesses require special medicine that takes up even more resources to craft. So you're forced to run around the whole map and fight the same respawning enemies over and over, in search for all those items needed. Later in game Jonathan will also be able to craft stuff for himself, injections that give him certain benefits during combat like additional stamina or health shots. I played on normal and especially during boss fights had to use those frequently. But those bloody things of course required additional scavenging for resources as well. So it was a never-ending fight for stuff for me.
And what's the WORST part about it, is that once you use your shots they are gone for good, even if you die and reload. THAT SHIT pissed the hell out of me, because it's almost impossible to get through certain areas or even boss battles when you're at your last straw already and have nothing on your hands to boost you up even just enough for you to get to a safe place where you can "lick your wounds". You've just faced a challenging boss battle or an encounter with multiple tough af enemies, so that you had to use all the tricks in your sleeve in order to get by and still got a GAME OVER screen in the end? Well, too fukkin bad, you'll get thrown right back into the action and in the same miserable state you just died in. Good luck with that!
Mind you, while you progress through the game, the enemies level up with you as well. And the damage you take from them is serious business. So when the game takes such an asshole approach by permanently taking your last surviving chances from you, this game SUCKS big time. I'd kinda understand that approach on higher difficulties, but I was playing on NORMAL, dammit! In the end I was so fed up with this frustrating bullshit that I eventually gave up on the game. Still looking for enough motivation to start all over on EASY in hopes that maybe at least then the game's balancing is fair to the player.
It's a real bummer for sure. I was really intrigued by the story. But because of such unnecessarily sadistic wannabe-soulslike gameplay elements it killed all the fun for me.

This isn't a console war comment lol..... I made a purchase on the Series X, and the store said ''Because of a purchase you have made, we offer you this discount'' and it was Vampyr, for like £9.99.
I then looked on the PS5 store, and it is on there on offer too..... I am not fussed about what console to play it on, but seeing it on offer on both Series X and PS5, i was in between of if it is worth it?
Would you say in 2023 it is worth taking the plunge on it?
