African Stonechat (Saxicola torquatus) Bird Call Video - Seen Near Satara
The African Stonechat (Saxicola torquatus), formerly known as the Common Stonechat, is a beautiful song bird that loves the open savannahs and grassland areas. I have not seen many in the Kruger National Park, and the African Stonechat is not really a Lowveld bird, they more associated with the Highveld, drier areas and grassland heavy regions. I saw this male African Stonechat on the S90 between Olifants and Satara Rest Camps, more closer to Satara.
The African Stonechat is a charismatic passerine bird species that frequents the diverse habitats of the Kruger National Park. With its distinctive black head, white collar, and mottled brown body, this small bird is easily recognisable as it perches prominently on shrubs and grass tussocks, often flicking its tail nervously.
These insectivorous birds are highly territorial during the breeding season, with males vigorously defending their chosen territories and engaging in conspicuous singing displays to attract mates. Their melodious calls and aerial acrobatics add to the vibrant atmosphere of the park during the spring and summer months. Outside of the breeding season, African Stonechats may form loose flocks, foraging for insects and small invertebrates across the park's expansive landscapes.
