That was a sense from the movie but we all now is was easy for her to pull off. I bet the reason for the separation was she has been out of work for so long and she is known for being Marsha Brady and just a celebrity wife now.

It is possible for two people to separate and still remain friends and have a good non awkward relationship. Especially if they have kids. Also, she hasn't been out of work.
