- This is our first time ever listening to Rush. Tom Sawyer is an interesting song. It's definitely a different vibe than we were expecting.

@Joe Brandon LOL take it away, rock star
@@bartjargengarblbargeler1980 😆
No doubt , in one phrase Lex captures it completely.
Science fiction rock. 🤤
Agreed!
“Like visiting a Rock science center”.
Well put, lady.
Totally
They indeed were the mad scientist of the lab called "Progressive Rock". You want to feel alien? dial up and listen to "2112".
On point...
Well, Neil Peart was 'The Professor'.
This is why I watch their reactions. I think Alex and Geddy would be very happy with that take all these years later.
RIP Neil Peart one of the greatest percussionists ever.
…and lyricists 🤟
He's like Eddie Van Halen but on Percussion and Drums. Both R I P.
"I don't know who your favorite drummer is, but Niel Piert is your favorite drummer's favorite drummer." - Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters
THE
Neil Peart stands alone
I love how when Lex's mind gets completely blown by great music, she just laughs with joy and amazement.
For sure . she's the real
She's laughing trying to act like she's never heard it before
Yet Brad is so wrapped up in trying to figure out the lyrics and the 'message' that he misses out on some great music. I wouldn't mind if this became the Lex & Lex channel...
"Changes aren't permanent, but change is."
Rush is one of the best.
I know, just another great line by Neil Peart.
That’s deep.
Kind of like "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice". That Geddy is not a Nobel prize winner is a crime.
@@MichaelMartin-eh6wl Yes, that is yet another genius line from the pen of Neil Peart that Geddy Lee sang. Those guys were absolute wizards.
The only two constants in life are change and resistance to change.
Brad: "I can't wait to do another Rush song", You won't be disappointed, a huge variety of sounds come from this legendary 3 man band.
OMG - Get ready for quite a ride.
Agreed---there is so much. The Trees, Farewell to Kings, 2112, Subdivisions, and Manhattan Project, By-Tor and the Snow Dog to Red Sector A---Rush is a journey for the thinking person
To understand this song you need to understand the Mark Twain character it was based on. Tom Sawyer was someone who understood human nature very well and was morally ambiguous enough that he had no qualms taking advantage of people when he applied that knowledge. One of the more famous scenes from the book was when Tom had to paint a fence as punishment assigned from his aunt, he managed to convince his friends that painting the fence was a privilege and in fact, he was the only one skilled enough to do it. Soon his friends were paying him for the opportunity to prove that they also had enough skill to be able to paint the fence and Tom got off without getting punished since his friends did all the work.
This song talks about a modern-day version of a person like that. Someone who always is running game and has an angle on everything.
RUSH- the only three people that can inspire the term " Orchestral "
"That was not a guitar solo." "That was a whole instrumental." Exactly. For your first time listening to Rush, you certainly "catch the drift" of how they make music.
The World's Smallest Orchestra.🤘
Three musical Gods!!!! They should have planets named after Neil, Geddy and Alex.
The whole "Moving Pictures" album is a masterpiece.
It's true.
absolutely
That and Permanent Waves 😊
Hermispheres, imo, is the pinnacle of their musical prowess. "La Villa Strangiato" > "YYZ" all day.
"This is a musical experience."
And boom... you seriously just described Rush in one sentence.
The real shame is they will never play live again and seeing Rush live (seen them 13 times) truly was a musical experience like no other.
Professional musicians each of them with the sound of a symphony on so many of their songs.
Good reaction guys.
I'm very jealous. 13 times?!?!
These two are putting out the best reactions right now!
great acting!
“Limelight” “YYZ” and “The Spirit of Radio” are good ones to do next but there are so many great Rush songs. More Rush, please!
And if they’re going to do YYZ, they need to do the Rush in Rio live version.
@@silentbrad-mmm I'm all about album versions first because they have the most aural clarity, then the live versions!
Yeah you need to do more RUSH!
@@chetzar not for rush
Agreed!
The musical science center. I literally laughed out loud. Rush was a very unique thing. They sound like no one and no one sounds like them. If you liked this, there are literally dozens and dozens of tracks that will give you that same feeling.
Perfect description of Rush!
Me too! She got it immediately!
Love how Lex sees things.
Lex: "I feel like you'd listen to this after you get home from school." Many of us old guys did, as soon as we got our paws on the album, LOL! Man, did that take me back, made me chuckle and smile. :-)
Yup. In 1982 when I was 10 years old I’d get off the bus and put on this album and absorb every note. There was not Instagram or TikTok. There were albums.
I played it loud til my mom came home, when we tuned into the CBC.
These reactions are great. It's nice to watch younglings discover and appreciate music that isn't new, but totally new to them.
Yes!!! This cassette was played by us 13 y.o. girls every week after school. We chilled, ate microwaved frozen burritos and put off homework for hours until the parents got home! The Clash Combat Rock was also big for us in 82/83... sigh. Good ol' days, indeed!
Btw, listen to Rush- Red Barchetta. The dystopian future seemed SO far away... and here we are - almost there.
"it's taking me to the music science center"... that is the BEST description of their music as I've ever heard... I LOVE it
"This is very different."
Yes they're Canadian.
In all seriousness, Rush is one of the best bands ever. I'd highly recommend Spirit of Radio and YYZ for next reactions
Ha ha
Why are their heads like that?!
No love for the trees??? 😁
I'm sorry, but 2112 anybody?
Rush is like Black Sabbath to me. When you first hear them, you are mesmerized by the guitar and the vocals. Then over time you realize it’s all about the drums and bass.
As well as with Tool
Drums & bass are the backbone on most great songs, but the rest is also needed like here: czcams.com/video/3_RB0tRI624/video.html
yep
Perfect description
Ah, with all due respect, Rush is nothing like Black Sabbath. That is giving Black Sabbath W A Y too much credit.
"I feel like Im going to the music science center." This is the single best description of Rush ever. I usually describe Rush, Jethro Tull, Blue Oyster Club, etc. as "Geek Rock."
i call em the music nerds
I love when Lexi hears that certain something and let’s out her little “oh!”.
Rush, like Pink Floyd, is on a different level. 3 man band that sounds like 50. Amazing. Best musicians around (Im a 40+ year musician).
"Yeah-yeah-yeah.." said early Genesis, Yes, Camel, Renaissance, Magma, Logos, Los Jaivas, King Crimson etc.
40+! 🤣🤣🤣Here comes 50!
Yes is awesome! Geddy played bass (on Roundabout) for their RnR Hall of Fame induction.
Best musicians around? Playing music for 40+ years has apparently ruined your hearing
@@Jlastinger88 I’m not a huge Rush fan per say but he said nothing wrong.
As much as I love and miss Neil Peart, Geddy Lee never gets the credit he so rightly deserves. The man does lead vocals, bass AND keyboard/synthesizer and sometimes all at the same time! Of course Alex Lifeson is no slouch either lol How a 3 man band can get this huge of a sound, I just don't understand. All I know is that I love it and there will never be another Rush. Rest in peace, Neil.
Absolutely. One of the most talented 3 piece bands ever, and I am still as amazed by them today as I was when I first heard them on the radio as a kid.
Agreed, when there's a band with such talent sometimes some members are overlooked. Makes me think of Led Zep and how John Paul Jones was in the same boat. The other members were so huge he was overlooked so much.
i feel like geddy gets plenty of credit, id consider him one of the bass player/musicians in the progressive rock genre
@@ClosedLoopMusic I agree. I would have to say that Alex Lifeson doesn't get enough credit for his amount of brilliant guitar work that he put into Rush's music.
No doubt. He’s overshadowed by the amazing drumming but he was no doubt a very important part of the whole.
As a black teenager when most of my friends where into rap and such I was old school and rock they are my favorite Canadian Band and as a drummer Neil Peart next to Buddy Rich the Best drummer that ever lived! Their music made me think alot and this is my favorite song. You should try AC/DC Back in Black. Well put it is a musical experience
“Orchestral” is a very good way to describe Rush. The play movements.
Lex’s reactions make your day brighter. You can’t help but smile watching her.
Totally agree. She feels the music..
Everyone needs someone as happy as her in their life. It's infectious.
That smile after Neil's fill with the giggle was awesome!
Brad seems like he's trying to grab and disassemble the music while Lex is dancing around him feeling the energy of it. It's a great combination.
@@lvgelfling72 She felt it right away...I've become to realize, from their reaction videos I've seen so far, this girl's a rocker in her fiber, in her soul....i have the feeling had Lex lived in the '70s, she would've had the "awesomest" of times.. 🤘😎
If y'all go down the Rush Rabbit Hole (or get on the Rush Train).. I'm here for all of it. Rush Army is alive and well in 2021. Best 3 piece band that ever existed.
Definitely should go running and dive into this rabbit hole
The Police? Really?? That's hilarious!!!
Patrick O'Rourke, The Police are even as good as Rush pre-Neil Peart
@Patrick O'Rourke As someone who started playing drums in 1985, Neil and Stewart were peanut butter and jelly. They were BOTH hugely influential. They were the K/Z combo of the 80's (the older drummers will get that last one)
This is what makes Rush who they are. They get you thinking. They get you wondering.
I saw these guys in concert at the Montreal Forum.Watching Neil Peart on the drums was unbelievable !
All that this 3-man band does is a RUSH! Lyrics, instrumentation and synergy!
“Like visiting a Music science center”....They didn't call Neil Peart The Professor, for nothing
3 guys, Pure Rock and Roll. Rush is the Most Underrated Rock Group of ALL Time.
Tom Sawyer tickled me around 1984, I’ve been hooked ever since

I had the privilege of seeing Rush live with my Dad when he was still alive. I come from a very musically inclined family, and as a lifelong drummer, it was unreal to see my Drum God in the flesh.
RIP Neil Peart and RIP Dad
Saw Rush with my dad, too! Signals tour. Our 2nd concert together. Mine is still here, sorry for your loss.
my dad hated this song lol
he's all like "when's this song even gonna end?"
@Christopher Meisner lol. to each their own, I suppose 😏😅
I saw them twice. Rush, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are my faves. For me, Rush has the most complex music while still retaining really cool grooves and melodies. Hemispheres is the pinnacle of Rush's conceptual period of songwriting.
These three men are absolute masters of their trade!! RIP to the Professor!! One of the most amazing drummers I've ever heard!!!
I love watching other people hear this for the 1st time, it's such an amazing work of art...
The whole Moving Pictures album is a masterpiece. Neil Peart, the drummer, wasn't nicknamed The Professor for nothing...Best drummer that has ever lived.
**John Bonham has entered the game**
@@FrowningIke Bonham was great, but I personally rank Peart and Mike Portnoy higher. Bonham belongs in the discussion though, no doubt about it.
My Favourite Rush Album
@@hazi5961 and I'll never argue otherwise. Its almost disrespectful to try and name THE ONE!
I saw the question put to Lars. You could see how uncomfortable the question made him. He was pushed for an answer and he picked Bonzo. It's definitely about preference. Two different styles. Both absolutely incredible!
@@FrowningIke Been playing drums for over 35 years. They say imitation the greatest form of flattery and I've been trying to imitate Peart since I began playing. Bonham, not so much. Bonham is very simplistic, and for Zeppelin, it works but Peart holds a master class in technique, and artistry, on every song. Bonham couldn't do what Peart did, but Peart can certainly do anything Bonham did. Peart>Bonham
“Working Man” is my favorite from them & worth a listen, it’s from early in their career, more blues based Rock.
And the real treat is the version from the Time Machine Tour, performed 36 years after it was released. At the end of a 3 hour set. When they are in their late 50's. And they KILL it.
In Cleveland live!
@@Prone2Thrill YES!!!!
Working Man is my favorite track from them as well. Because it's relatable and also I like the vocalist's singing style more in that one.
@@Prone2Thrill Dude I worked with was there, so jealous.
The Canadian Power Trio, second to none! RIP Professor!
Watching Lexi build up with excitement to a crescendo while the solos erupt is a joy to behold...and then there's Brad to reel her in with his inquisitive mind about lyrics....it doesn't get much better in the CZcams reaction world.
absolutely!

Ladies and gentlemen… RUSH!!!
Check out “The Trees”
RIP Professor 💔
Yes! My favorite song. Only seen 1 other person react to it.
Those.... High pitched drums in the middle section.... Amazing.
Yes, The Trees!!
It’s refreshing to see someone actually use their own brain in picking a request instead of reciting the local classic rock radio program director’s playlist.
I hope your request isn’t drowned out by 200 normies asking for Limelight.
I’ll request it also desperately
Naw red barchetta gets me😌
“Anthem” from Fly by Night is awesome, “Before and After” from their debut album, then “La Villa Strangiato” “Xanadu” “Closer to the Heart” and “Limelight”.
Lex's look of approval at the opening synth sweep 🤘
I can't believe I have been listening to this song almost literally my entire life.. and people can find it new - that is a testament of how good it truly is.... glad to see people with and open mind (and ears)... thanks guys. It's great that you pay attention to the lyrics too... easy to get lost in how amazing the music is here, this is what makes Rush so unique, you can nerd out to the music but then there are other levels to consider if you want to dive deep.
Rush is excellence! A 3 man band, nobody else compares to their skill level.
Dream Theater
Tool
If you REALLY want to dive in, check out the live version of Xanadu! You're gonna be blown away!
Much love to you two.
Rush is great. But I can instantly name 20 other bands that are just as good or better. 2 of them were already mentioned in the first two comments.
"Tom Sawyer" is a rock classic. If you ever listen to other songs from Rush, you'll see they're different. A lot of their songs are very different from each other. Rush likes to experiment and try different things. They did a lot over 40 years. They were three of the most accomplished musicians you'll come across.
Yeah and they are all in the same band which is incredible and so proud of are Canadian lads.
I love Lex’s reactions to Rush more than any others. She just allows the music to wash over her and her emotions are childlike in aww and happiness. And yes, this was the song we listened to after school as loud as possible!!
love how they switch off that riff between the synth and the bass guitar, so dope
I remember when my dad used their CD test out his new stereo... this song and YYZ shook the entire house. I love the memories that songs like this give us.

How do you like the drummer in this 3-piece? czcams.com/video/3_RB0tRI624/video.html
I'm astounded that two amazingly well rounded people as yourselves have never experienced "Rush".
I guess I'm just getting old.
I"m not even a huge fan of the band but I do enjoy them and I do think Neil is one of the best drummers of all time and Geddy Lee is an amazing vocalist/lyricist.
I doubt Rush were that popular in the neighbourhood's they both grew up in, lol. People have many reasons not to have discovered a certain band/artist. I myself, a rock drummer, didn't discover Rush until in my 40's... purely because someone I didn't like in my teen's was into them! 😆🤦♂️
Y'all nailed this one! Rush is a musical enigma. That, is what makes it art.. peace. Happy Thanksgiving 😘
Neil's lyrics are incredibly thought-provoking I would highly recommend doing freewill next, then do the trees, closer to the heart, nobody's hero and the garden. Those are some of the more thought-provoking songs off the top of my mind that I think you would enjoy.
...add Bravado to that list as well 😉
Freewill, for sure!
And Natural Science
Gina, I was listening to "Nobody's Hero" today and thinking about what a beautiful song that is! Rush really cheerleads for Humanity and "the common man", so well. Another great, thought and emotion provoking song is "The Pass". I bet Brad & Lex would really appreciate that song as well.
@@michaelbriefs9764 Absolutely! That one is great as well. Michael have you checked out Brad Poynter yet? He's a great Rush reactor.
Time to listen to the full 2112 Overture, just be ready to go on a journey! Great reaction channel guys!
I don't think they're ready for 2112 yet.
2112 is a bit much. With lyrics I’d say spirit of radio or limelight, or Yyz for instrumental.
Need to watch the "graphic novel" video.
"I can't wait to do another Rush song." My favourite quote by Brad.
THREE GUYS make this music!! The singer plays Bass, Sings and plays Keyboards AT THE SAME TIME!!! 😲
Rush is my absolute favorite band. Saw them live for the first time in 1984 when I was 11. I have seen them a total of 28 times, which in reality isn't very many. They started my love of rock music at a much younger age, thanks to my older brother and cousins. Their drummer (RIP Neil Peart) is your favorite drummers, favorite drummer. Please keep this rabbit hole going.
Ha I started in 84 as well and have seen the band 30 times. Also started drumming in 1984 thanks to Neil's inspiration. There were a few years when all I did was sit behind the drum kit learning Rush songs. Great way to cut your teeth! Neil continues to inspire.
I totally agree.
Thx. My favorite band ever. You can’t go wrong on any of their songs. YYZ is a great instrumental

Diving into Rush! This band is known to be THE quintessential 'power trio,' in all of rock history. All absolutely stellar musicians and the drummer, Neil Peart (The Professor) writes nearly all the extremely eloquent lyrics and is widely considered to be the best rock drummer (along with John Bonham) of the entire genre. Spirit of Radio or La Villa Strangiato should be next. Cheers!
Cream wants a word with you.
Neil was a great drummer but, ...because I am a professional drummer I can literally list 100 that are the same or better.
@@meb882 They're great, but limited discography. Have them call me an I'll explain, lol
Of the 100, name me 5 that have had the same effect that Niel P. had globally, in spawning millions of drummers??
I too (was) a drummer and understand the craft very, very well,
But there were none other than perhaps Bonham that had that infectious element to them that created a legion of followers and students.
All the rest may be equal or better in your eyes, but it my mind, comes down to whether they were able to “bring it” to world as he did - and very few others have- (Bonham, Copeland, Collaiauta, Smith) . That said, Neil reigned supreme in his (compositional) musicality, drive and attack..
RIP - GOAT….
Rush “YYZ”, live in Rio is a must see. A HUGE crowd going crazy over this song is something to see.
Lex is such a beautiful human. i love how she lets the music just pick her up and carry her away
Tom Sayer and Huckleberry Fin were 2 kids in the old south that traveled the Mississippi barefoot and doing crazy shit
Rush was around for a while, so their sound is a continuum. Early Rush sounds a little different from middle Rush, which sounds a little different from later Rush. The constant is well-crafted music and thought-provoking, masterful lyrics.
Rush, a band of only three members, was quite possibly the most talented band on the planet, pound for pound. Have you done "Subdivisions" yet? If so, "Limelight" should be next. We all know you'd love either.
I agree, great tunes.
THERES ONLY 3 PEOPLE? I played this on guitar hero and it’s always stuck with me
I love the way Lex gets giddy, when a part hits her soul
There is a documentary on Rush, Netflix. First time i heard Rush.. i was immediately a fan. Best trio I've ever heard.
"The Spirit of Radio", Rush is incredible. The greatest drummer to ever live is Neil Peart, hands down. Primus is touring this summer and covering Rush's album 'A Farewell To Kings' in it's entirety.
I’ve watched dozens of reactions to this song some very very good with deep thought. But watching you both absorb so differently yet come away with a lot of the same thoughts and feelings was awesome. You’ve actually added some greater insight to the song than what I’ve had. Thank you both.
They are very thoughtful. A very good reaction.
Rush has 40 years worth of music you can journey through. All of them are the best at what they do. Neil Peart is a prolific writer, lyricist, and by far and always the Professor on the drum kit.
Rush is my absolute favourite band in the world, seen them several times, sound just as good live as versus studio 🎸🎸🎼🎼
The Trees is one of their best songs IMO. It’s very subjective, so you can interpret it to apply to all kinds of situations.
Their last album, Clockwork Angels, is an absolute masterpiece. Great sound, heavy guitars, great songwriting. Check out BU2B.
“The Spirit of Radio” is a must
And there's only 3 of them...
The first time I saw RUSH was in Greenbay, Wisconsin 1982 at the Brown's County Memorial Arena.
My older brother rode the Greyhound bus from Chicago to Greenbay to see the concert. It was "General Seating" (pick your own seats) so as soon as the doors opened my brother and I ran toward the stage...we were only about 50 feet from the stage. RUSH played everything in its entirety and not in medleys as they did in their concerts in the later years.
My older brother died 2 years later but this was my best concert memory and it was great being able to share that night with him.
Lex is, hands down, the best online personality. A joy to watch and hear her..
"what you say about his company, is what you say about society" catch the drift"
Jim the escaped slave is his company along with Huckleberry Finn
Ive heard this an overplayed Rush "hit" by a few. I remember the first time I heard this. It was WTF and how could they pull this off so tight in a shorter Rush song(For them this was a shorter song than some more lengthier pieces). This was fire in 81. And still is 40 years later. I never forgot that first listen. Its always great to see others hear what this band can do. Nice reaction
A cover band played it at our junior high during a prep rally in 83. So damn awesome. They were spot on. I was amazed.
Neil was nicknamed The Professor for good reason. Besides his immense talent he was also a brilliant poet AND received a PhD from the University of Toronto.
I remember seeing Rush do this in concert at Norfolk Scope before it was actually recorded. Neil Peart (RIP) was a genius. The greatest drummer EVER, and an amazing lyricist. I have no idea how Geddy Lee can focus on playing the bass, synthesizer, and singing all at the same time. Just phenomenal!!
Yes, finally...Rush!!! Some if the best musicians on the planet. Unfortunately, Neil is no longer with us. No doubt, the best percussionist ever!
Best 3 man band ever
This is one of the few I would say you need to see the video because then you will realize the greatness of Neil Peart. The size of his drum set. The complexity of what he’s doing. He was one of a kind. He has some solos online if you want to see him do it. It’s unbelievable.
He’s old enough to know what right but young enough not to choose it. He’s noble enough to win the world but week enough to lose it. He’s a new world man.
Love it guys! Please do spirit of the radio next. Also Ballroom blitz by Sweet. Both are really abstract and i know you guys will love these.
The problem for a three-piece always will be to create a sound that can compare with much larger bands. Each member needs to be really good at what they do. My current favorite band is three sisters from Mexico that really can create a lot of quality sound just with three members. They are the future hope for classic-sounding rock.
Please react to *The Warning* and their latest song *Evolve* czcams.com/video/3_RB0tRI624/video.html
They don't just move air, they really perform and this video has 450 k views in its first month.
The Warning are amazing! The oldest is 21 but they have deep roots in classic rock, with elements of grunge, punk, and even k-pop. And passion!
Another vote for The Warning, they're great!
A true Power Trio of sisters from Monterrey Mexico, such talented musicians and singer-songwriters getting ready to explode into the rock world, definitely give them a shot, they will not disappoint! 😎⚡🤘 both Evolve and Choke from yet to be released 3rd. Album, are exceptional🤘🔥🤘
The Warning isn't quite my style of music, but they are immensely talented, and I hope they become hugely successful. They definitely deserve it!
Never has so much sound come out of just 3 guys. Geddy Lee plays bass guitar, keyboards and sings sometimes all at the same time.
Rush is a rabbit hole. One you start to appreciate them you find all kinds of gems!
OMG, I love you guys!! I love how you are experiencing Rush for the first time! The Rabbit Hole is deep, y'all...DEEEP!! You are going to love this band!
Loved your reactions. The Lyrics are peppered with all poetic devices. From metaphor, Simile, Assonance and alliteration. Their lyrics are deep and thought provoking. Literally have to do mental gymnastics to keep up. A three man band that plays all instruments to the max.
Omg..."music science center". Nailed it! I
5:44 I got that too, about the "if you're judging him, you're really judging you thing", you're more perceptive than I'd thought during my previous comment lol
Rush has a very loyal following. I typically overlook lyrics, but Neil Peart changed that. Rush is for those who embrace uniqueness and individuality over conformity. The thinking person's music.
Neal Peart is the greatest drummer to ever play.

I bought my first Rush album, "2112", on 8-track cassette back in the late 70s, which pretty much makes me one of the coolest people who ever lived. I am so great, and I mean SOOOO great.
I was not into Rush at all, but one of my colleagues when I worked flipping burgers after school turned me onto them. He sang with the Seattle Opera, and he said there was only one rock band he would ever listen to, and that's Rush, for their rock opera 2112. (His words not mine.) I knew one of my friends was into Rush, so I borrowed his cassette of 2112 and listened to it nonstop for a week. And that's how I became a Rush fan.
Been my favorite band since I was 8 years old. Loved watching you guys groove to the song. Thanks for sharing their talent and genius.
As a proud 55 year old Canadian who had the pleasure of growing up with the music of Rush, it is incredible to listen to your comments about their music. And at the point you saw this video you had no idea they were just 3 guys :-) Without a doubt you both "caught the drift", about this song and their music in general. RIP Neil Peart
