  • This is our first time listening to Metallica. One is an interesting song that brings light to the horrors of war. It's a topic that a lot of us have similar opinions about, but feel powerless to actually affect change.

The song is about the book/movie "Johnny Got His Gun" where a young soldier, seriously wounded in war, was unable to communicate that his mind was still intact despite a broken body without sight, speech, or hearing and no arms or legs. His life became a living hell and the story meant to challenge the ideals of patriotism and the true costs of wars and their worth.

I just can't understand how so many reactors can be confused and not understand what this video and song is about...they literally tell you what's going on many times in the video's narration/lines, they literally tell you what's going on in the song's (very clear) lyrics, and they very clearly show what's going on in the video. How can people miss that?
All three literally show and tell that the guy was wounded in war, is in the hospital, he's immobile, no-one can hear or get any communications or reactions from him...!? Surely everyone gets that when suddenly there's an echoing line in the video that it's his thoughts...and he clearly says what's going on MANY TIMES. And Hetfield sings in the guy's voice, telling his thoughts and very clear descriptions of what's going on.
      How can people miss that?
I can understand that someone might be a tiny bit confused by very old hospital stuff, but is it so hard to interpret a guy laying there with his face covered and the doctors and nurses literally doing all the procedures to care for someone in a coma/coma-like state? And again: all the time, constantly, time and time again they describe what's going on!
I find it fascinating and astounding how clear this is, and how many people just totally don't get it (these two are far from the only ones who totally missed everything).

The book describes how Johnny slowly becomes aware of how much he has lost. Both arms and legs of course, but also quite a bit of his torso and his entire face up to his eyebrows.
The reason he ended up like this, is that the extension of his injuries made him the perfect guenia pig for a lot of new medical procedures, how long they would be able to keep someone on life support and the long term effects of it.

The story of an infantryman who steps on a landmine and wakes to gradually discover he has lost everything - his arms and legs, his five senses - except his mind, which is now cast adrift, trapped in its own grim and impossible reality, One was both a nightmare writ large and a musically transcendent journey. The protagonist’s descent into living hell, wordlessly begging for death, capable of being seen both as existential metaphor for the human condition and the solipsism of the rock star life. Its frantic climax also served up a state of inarticulate teenage angst like no other rock song before or since.

I remember when I first heard this song and how much I felt it, and I could totally see you feelin it too, and you picking up on the melodic and beautiful guitar, and then the hair, and the changes, and wanting to be at a concert, and the energy, and just yeah man....this song really does get you like "JYEAH!" and one of the most amazing parts of the song, is the progression, how they build the energy, throughout the whole thing, until the hard drop at the end. It just makes you wanna headbang and throw your hair around too, if you have enough of it. =)

The only thing that really bothered me about the book was the portrayal of a sort of optimism as the protagonist attempted to determine the time of day. How he waited and counted the estimated two hours between nurse's visits. The rising sun warming his room telegraphed morning. He laid and counted across six months... A year... He tapped Morse code with his head for - what - a year? Two years? Longer? In the dark, in one little spot without smell or sound or taste or touch or chewing or swallowing or seeing or feeling or sensing or talking or anything whatsoever? I spent a night in the drunk tank in the dark all alone and out of touch. Can't imagine years in a black hole like a box alone.

I've never been in the service and it fucked with me a little bit too man. This song was one of those parts of life that takes you from a boy playing war games outside and in video games, to a man who understands the importance of military while hoping to never have to use it.
I've heard many military and war related stories about many of my family from the 20s to 80s generations (I was born in 95, and have the faintest memory of 9/11 for context) and have a tremendous respect not just for what our soldiers do but for what they sacrifice. Fighting is a sacrifice. Training is a sacrifice. Coming home is a sacrifice to some as well. You sacrifice so much of yourself along the way it seems.
I don't support every war that the US/Canada gets into, but I always support the troops who have had their boots on the ground, wings in the sky, or legs of the sea and faced real threats. War affects people all across the world, and those who face the fires front and center deserve to thanked for what they were sent through. And dammit every single one of ya's should be granted absolutely free healthcare for all war related mental traumas and/or bodily injuries.

“One” is another Metallica song which was inspired by a piece of literature and in which James Hetfield is portraying the role of a particular character. Said literary work would be a book set in World War I entitled “Johnny Got His Gun” (1939) by Dalton Trumbo. More specifically it was made into a movie in 1971, and it was that film in particular which inspired this track. And whom James is basing the lyrical perspective of “One” on is the main character from that piece. This individual is a war veteran who in the theater of combat has lost all of his limbs in addition to most of his senses and as such is confined to a hospital bed. However, despite all of this he is still very much alive. So as can be imagined - and as is relayed in the song - he actually desires to die.

    • @Swampster70
      @Swampster70 Před 2 lety +17

The original inspiration for the song was James and his brother talking about what could be the worst thing imaginable. James believed it would be not being able to communicate in any way and being unable to see, speak, hear and move. It took many years before James' brother read the book Johnny Got His Gun and mentioned it to James. Prior to this, James didn't know how he would write a song about his thought of unimaginable loneliness.
In addition to the reference to the book, Metallica purchased the rights to the movie to avoid paying royalties.

Kinda wish they'd listened to the studio version that isn't mixed with the JGHG stuff because it detracts far more than it adds.

The Book Johnny Got His Gun was wriiten by screenwriter Daltan Trumbo in 1939. It was a story told about an American soldier's perspective after sustaining woulds that his arms, legs, sight and speech, much like the song mentions. It took place during World War 1. The novel was inspired by an article Trumbo read about a soldier in WW1 who was horribly disfigured. The book was released at the outbreak of the Second World War in Europe. Thirty-two years later in 1971, it became a movie. This was released during the Vietnam. The theme of the story is the human cost of war by losing one's human faculties while still trying to retain their humanity.

For me, it was his solo for "Hit The Lights". Then when "Ride the Lightning" came out, I thought, "How is he going to top the solo of 'Creeping Death'"? Then "Master of Puppets" came out, and he topped it with the solo in "Master of Puppets". I was blown away! I thought, "He's got to hit a home run blindfolded to top that." Then came, "...And Justice For All". When I first heard the guitar solo for "One", I thought, "The motherfucker did it! Blindfolded and hit a home run!" In my opinion, to this day, it's still his best.

This goes back to the times where war didn’t have limitations to where young men had to go to war and fight for the promise land Back when they had no choice and when war was done with them they would return with a missing leg, arms or even dead it’s in memory to all those who lost their lives or come back incomplete from their whole body.
    The video is a movie

The video was from John's got his gun. Or something like that. And yeah he's nodding S.O.S. help me . Crazy stuff. Opened my eyes to what veterans face.
