In this video, I'm using some acrylic templates with a router to create different shaped charcuterie boards. It's easy to mix and match the different handle styles with different boards. These clear templates make it easy for you to work around any voids in the wood or orient the grain exactly like you want it.

This looked like an interesting video. Sadly, I had to switch it off after a couple of minutes because of the intrusive, annoying, and totally unnecessary music.
Sorry you have such picky requirements for your FREE entertainment.
@@BruceAUlrich I'm sorry that you are unable to accept constructive criticism.
It’s not constructive when you use pejorative words like “annoying.”
@@BruceAUlrich Perhaps you should ask yourself if the music did, in any way, make your video more instructive, enjoyable or informative. If the answer to any of these questions is no, then ask yourself what purpose it serves.
If your content is good, it will not require any musical "enhancements".
But if your content is poor, no amount of bolted-on music will improve it.
A further problem is that we all have differing tastes in music. Whatever music you choose, you'll not please everybody, so it's probably best not to alienate the portion of your audience that doesn't share your taste in music.
@@BruceAUlrich Both of you 2 are right.
Bruce, I have a problem with any music.
My problem is I now have hearing aids & when you are talking & the music is playing I can't understand what you are saying.
It is amost like when people that wear masks are talking I can't understand what is been said.
The TV stations do the same thing 48 hours, CNN, 60 min. when they run their stories, I now no longer watch them as I don't care for CC.
P.S. My opinion, "2 rights don't make a wrong"? 😷😊
thank you for the video, now I know how to and just ordered two templeats from Crafted Elements and bottle opener templets as well
I love all the unique shapes. Beautiful work
Thank you!
Those boards were a lot of fun! Great work, Bruce.
Appreciate that! I like all of the different styles.
Great video. Super slick and manageable for any person who wants to make their own!
Appreciate that! That was my hope...or just buy my templates. ha ha
I really like the idea of using acrylic to make the templates great tip Bruce
Thanks so much! It's cool to be able to see exactly where you're placing it.
These boards look great, nice job!
Thanks so much!
These all look awesome!
Thanks so much! They were fun!
Love those funky shapes!
Thanks, Zach! They were fun to create!
Such an awesome way to batch out a ton of boards! I really like how you hacked the template for the long board! Very clever blue tape trick from Drew too...banked that one! I'm not going to be too original, but I definitely have to go with the zebra wood!
Yeah, I think those were my favorite too. They're just so cool and different looking! That blue tape loop trick worked really well. Thanks for watching, Ethan!
I like the designs of your boards. Good job!
Thanks so much!
Great idea on using the acrylic templates.
Thanks so much! They worked really well.
Those are beautiful looking boards Bruce, I like the zebra wood the best, the organic shapes give them a really great look
Thank you! I think the zebrawood is my favorite also!
A lot of good tips and information. Thank you
Glad you found it useful! Thanks for watching!
Nice video, well produced and informative. I liked seeing your process and what a wonderful way to make use of the various woods you had stored.
Thanks so much for the kind words & for watching!
Great procedure using ca glue and tape. Thanks
Glad it was helpful! I use that method all the time.
Can't wait to get mine and start grinding these bad boys out. Great video, Bruce! Happy Holidays to you and your family, sir.
Hey Tim! Thanks! Appreciate the kind words. Merry Christmas to you guys!
Great looking boards Bruce! Merry Christmas!
Thank you, sir! And a very Merry Christmas to you and your family, Greg!
oh man they all look great, like the templates you made, I've done a few of these freehand, instead of flush trimming the edge I just sanded and burned the edges with a small blow torch, the oak one caught my eye. have a great 2021
That oak one is sharp! Sounds like a pretty cool method you used to burn the edges
Great work as always. My wife liked the zebra wood board the best. I like the color of the bubinga.
You just like saying bubinga, don’t you? I do too. Ha ha. I think the zebra wood is my favorite also!
@@BruceAUlrich Guilty! Bubinga is a fun word to say. I've not worked with it, how was it to mill and use the templates on?
Very nice job on those man!
Appreciate that!
Nice video. I'm jealous of all the room (& good) in your shop 😁
Thank you!
Nicely done, Bruce. You made it look easy! I would love to have a spindle sander in my shop!
The spindle sander really helps with some of those tight curves. There was still a lot of hand sanding. I can’t imagine without the sander! Thank you!

great video! Thanks for sharing your tips
Appreciate that, Chris!
Very cool !!! Merry Christmas to you and your family .
Thanks, Mike! A very Merry Christmas to y'all too!
Great video Bruce! I really need to get me an edge sander.
Thank you! It has been a big time saver. There are many times I go right to it.
The curly oak is a good choice - besides being interesting, it seems to reflect the fact that these are working kitchen/dining utensils. AND each one can lock up CO2 for decades, just when we need that the most! Now we need to get billions of them in use!
O
I love the curly white oak ones
Great video, Bruce~! I like the Zebra Wood board, but that gnarly White Oak one looks great~! I also like the "tape tip" that you threw in from Drew. Will have to remember that one. Thanks~!
Yeah, that was some wild white oak. I agree with you. Thanks!
Well done. Thanks
Thank you!
Love the boards! I've got a video mid-edit that i started earlier this year making an order of 36 of my Monroe serving boards. Coming soon! I'm chasing you Bruce!! 😆👊🏻
Ha ha! Looking forward to seeing that! Thanks, Seth!
Very nice 👍
Thanks so much!
Thanks!
Bruce, Herllo from Canada! My favorite wood to work with is Birds Eye Maple. If you can get some of that, it is an amazing wood to work with!. Thanks for your inspiration.
Thank you for watching! I love birdseye maple too!
Crazy curly white oak my favourite
I really like those also!
Awesome video. What's the purpose (and type) of tape you used before pouring the epoxy for the knot? Thanks!
love the white oak but they all look great. just wondering how or where you got the templates to cut out the acrylic templates. Thanks for sharing the video
Thank you! I really liked the white oak ones also. Some of them I purchased and then modified and some were drawn.
Nicely done. Ultimately what was the thickness of your boards when you you used the spiral flush trim up cut bit?
They’re about 3/4” or a hair thicker.
I love these boards. You had some great material and did a great job of using the material on hand. I also love the templates. I'm curious if you have a digital version of the files you can sell? I have access to a laser and cnc and would love to make some.
Thanks, Angie! I appreciate that! Let me see what I can do. I bought the commercial rights to these so I can make physical products to sell but I can’t sell the files themselves.
@@BruceAUlrich is it possible to purchase the digital files from the place you purchased the commercial rights from?
@@nathanielhorn1248 Yeah, probably. I found the user on Etsy. ;)
Great project. Where did you get your acrylic? I have a Glowforge too and want to make up some templates. Their materials are a little high so looking for a more cost effective alternative.
I buy entire sheets of it and break it down myself. I pick this stuff up locally. You probably have someone near you that is a plastics dealer.
After you finish wiping with oil, do you let it dry or keep wiping until the oil is completely absorbed into the wood and no wipe streaks are visible?
For this stuff, it says to buff it in with a white non-scratch pad. Then let it sit on there for about 45 min. Then, buff off the excess with a clean cloth until it is dry to the touch.
Great job. Like all the different templates. What laser engraver do you have?
Thank you! When I made this video, I had the Glowforge Basic. I’ve upgraded to a 150 watt machine now.
Great video Bruce! I love your templates! I have the same bandsaw I believe - 30th Anniversary Grizzly. I added the 12" riser block to it and I have not regretted it even once. It's worth the price. On the finish side, have you ever tried Watco Butcher Block oil & finish? I just picked some up today to try out.
Great looking boards. Too good looking to pick a fav!!!
So hard to pick! Ha ha. That’s a great bandsaw. I’ve not used that finish. I hear good things though!
Fun video, lots of great tips. Could you tell me more about how you laser cut the templates? Power, speed, number of passes? I tried cutting 1/2" cast acrylic but after numerous passes it still wasn't cut through. Thanks!
For this video, I was using a Glowforge and they have some recommended speeds and power settings in their software. I’ve got a different laser now and it is totally different. I seem to have pretty good success with elevating the acrylic off of the honeycomb bed with some more pieces of acrylic and making multiple quick passes. I’ve never tried cutting 1/2” though...I bet that can be tricky.
Merry Christmas, Bruce! Great process.
Thanks so much! Merry Christmas to you also!
Well done! I like those templates. What is the thickness of your boards?
Thank you! Most of these are about 1” thick
Nice, comprehensive video. I do have one question... What is the thickness of these boards? It's difficult to tell from the video but they look to be about an inch, maybe 7/8". (That would determine the thickness of the boards that I need before resawing them.)
I don’t recall the exact thickness at this point. I would say most of them were either 3/4” or 7/8”, you’re right. Thanks for watching!
Hi Bruce,
✌🏻New suscriber!
Hi! Thanks!
Bruce....wonderful video explaining your charcuterie board build. I noticed you have a 14 inch grizzly bandsaw with at least a half inch blade. I also have a 14 inch grizzly with a 6 inch riser block. Unfortunately I get a lot of vibration when I resaw wood with a wider blade....and get drifty cuts. What blade brand and size are you using? What tires do you have on your bandsaw. And can you think of anything else that's causing my vibration/drifty cuts. Perhaps you've had the same issue and solved it....thanks!
Thank you! Sorry to hear you're having vibration with your bandsaw. I do not have the riser block on mine, so I wonder if it is anything with that. I have the stock tires on mine. I think this blade is 3/8", but it might be 1/2". I buy my blades on amazon. There's a brand, Olsen, that's been around for a long time and has really good, inexpensive blades. My first thought about yours might be that it needs more tension, if it is drifting. Or maybe the blade is dull. Mine will start to drift a lot when it is getting dull.
Thank for your quick reply!
Being that they are face grain do you worry about cupping or bowing? I noticed you don't put feet on them for air circulation. I am wondering if you have found they aren't necessary?
Not really. I’ve sold some of them but the ones I’ve kept, I’ve had no issues.
Hi, tried to buy a couple of templates in the UK, no can do, no option to ship to UK
Thank you so much for this amazing video! I loved the music and the way you synced up the video to the beat at 3:23 was top class. [Try not to pay attention to rude people if they can't appreciate it...] **Quick question: would you recommend Odie's to finish a board over butcher block oil? Which is more likely to last longer over more usage of the charcuter board? THANK YOU AGAIN!
Well, thanks for the kind words! I've never used butcher block oil, so I don't really know how to compare that. I would NOT use Odie's Oil any longer...the owner/founder is a real piece of work, and looks down on his typical customer base. I would probably use some Mahoney's walnut oil finish...I use that on a lot of my other cutting boards. A lot of bowl turners use it also. They distill it so there is nothing in it that would cause a nut allergy. I've got a link to it in my description. Those links help me out a bit if you shop with them....at no cost to you. ;)
@@BruceAUlrich great, thank you again for the useful information! cheers
bruce, hello where do you get all the different woods, i live in a little farm community in North Carolina, any help with this will be appreciated
Here, there and everywhere. Ha ha. There is probably a lumber supplier or two writhing an hour of you, I would bet.
Great job great video how do I order the acrylic patterns
Thank you! I’ve got a link to my shop in the description. Appreciate the kind words!
Good stuff. What's your method to make the templates?
Oh, I laser cut them out of acrylic like you saw in the video.
what type of bit did you use to do the inside of the handles?
I’ve got it linked in the description as “Flush Trim Bit.” It is a nice bit!
Hey Bruce what brand laser cutter do you use to make templates?
I have used a few different ones over the years. I’ve used a Glowforge, a 60w, a 80w and a 150w.
Bruce, how long mineral oil takes to dry into the board and then, when may use it?. I think mineral oil is less risky for anyone who is allergic to natural ones.
Mineral oil never fully dries/cures. It always seems to stay a bit oily. The walnut oil I use is distilled to remove the proteins that people with nut allergies react to. There are other food safe finishes though, like this Odie’s Oil I used.
I would like to buy some of your templates. How can I find your store site?
Hey Joe! I've got them on my website here: www.bruceaulrich.com/shop

Great stuff Bruce. What model of DeWalt Planer do you use, and same for Jointer?
I have the DeWalt 735 and my jointer is a Grizzly 6” with helical head.
@@BruceAUlrich Thank you so much...talk about a quick response! Just curious, where are you located?
I’m just outside of Lexington, Kentucky
What machine are you using to create/ build the acrylic templates?
I cut mine on a laser engraver/cutter.
Need those templates
Bruce:
I enjoyed your charcuterie board video. I am interested in your templates. On your website it lists it for $39.99. Is that for 1 template or a set of them?
Thank you! That’s for 1 but send me an email and I can generate a coupon for purchasing multiples I you want.
curious as to why you didn’t just cut the boards out on the cnc router? Seems like it would have eliminated some steps.
I’m sure it would have but I didn’t have one. And a lot of people done, so I wanted to show a different way to do it.
Can a template be made out of quarter inch plywood? Thanks
I'm sure it could. Plywood is not the best choice from what I've seen though. It kind of makes the bearing on your router take some grooves.
Hi, where can I find your template? tks from Colombia
Hi there! I've got them linked on my website in the video description
Would have loved to see the Lazer engraver
I should have shown it!

Yeppers. I put it on there a few years ago. Does a pretty good job.
@@BruceAUlrich Cool thanks.
I was hoping you would discuss how you made the templates...
These were some designs that I purchased.
@@BruceAUlrich Thanks.
I just learned that trick by accident...wetting baord and resanding and it's stays fine...first few I didn't know why they felt rough again after oiling ect ect
Yeah, that’s called raising the grain. Anytime your piece will come into contact with water like a cutting board, it will feel rough if you do not do this.
@@BruceAUlrich I know now...leaning process is woodworking is insane..need those templates but the acrylic ones are expensive if you want a variety
Hi Bruce....I just came across this video.....we have a laser machine....would you sell us the SVG for your templates? We have a few sheets of acrylic that we could use.
Do you have a video on how to make your own template ?
I don’t have a separate one about that. Maybe it’ll be one I do in the future.
@@BruceAUlrich it would be highly appreciated by your viewers
great video. on the idea of adding tape to align your template tape, can you not just CA glue the two tapes upside down and then align your boards. so you won't have to remove the extra tape you had to use in between them.
Yeah, I think that would have worked well. Thanks for watching!
How thick are the boards?
They range from about 3/4" to a little over an inch.
How thick is that acrylic?
It is 1/4” acrylic
I am sure you meant to say you should use Food Grade Mineral Oil because regular Mineral Oil will turn rancid after a while... Otherwise great video and tip with the tape and CA Glue.
This is the stuff you can get from a pharmacy so it is food grade.
😃👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks, Fred!
any chance you sell templates?
I do sell templates like these! I’ve got a link in the description of the video

Can you add dimensions for the acrylic templates? Thanks.
@@wgustavus Hey there...I just added the approximate dimensions for each one. Thanks for the heads up!
Question. Typically what’s the thicknesses of a Charcuterie board. And what types of wood should not be used? Also. I have 50 boards of butternut that’s been seasoned for the last 10 years. Can’t find anyone that would buy it. Can it be considered as a cutting board? Most are 2 1/2 in thick maybe 6 in wide and 6 to 8 ft long. Let me know.
I’m not that familiar with butternut. I think for serving boards, a lot of woods can be used. You get some people that get pretty down on red oak for cutting boards, but for a serving board, I think even that would be fine.
Bruce A. Ulrich just a follow up. What would be a appropriate thickness for a Charcuterie board?
Oh, sorry. Missed that part. I think you can do whatever you want but at least 3/4” would be a good thickness!
Bruce A. Ulrich thank you.
Do you sell the templates?
