  • In this Film Courage video interview, Filmmaker Rory Karpf recalls a traumatic experience during his film/tv production internship in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. Despite his initial excitement, he struggled to be professional and got fired publicly after a comment exchange with a production assistant. However, this setback led him to reach out to an internship opportunity at late night with Conan O'Brien, which eventually turned into a successful and fulfilling experience. Rory learned that sometimes, a negative event can lead to better opportunities, and he thrived during his time at Conan's show.
Rory Karpf is a 4-time Emmy and Peabody Award winning filmmaker who has collaborated with notable talents such as Tom Cruise, Kevin Costner, Snoop Dogg, Shaquille O'Neal, Paul Newman, Vin Diesel, Peyton Manning, Rob Lowe and Dana White. His documentary work includes the ESPN 30 for 30 films "I Hate Christian Laettner," "Nature Boy," "The Book of Manning," the Netflix series "Coach Snoop," and the AMC series "The Secret History of Comics." "Grace Point" is Rory's first scripted feature as a writer and director.

    Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/425k5rG
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/3WEuz0k
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv

Have you ever been let go from an unpaid job (volunteer, internship, etc.)?

That didn't seem all that unprofessional. Even for back then. Sounds like the PA was full of herself. And I wonder where is she now? Lol.🤔

Sounds like he deserved the firing, but he also admitted, and learned from his mistakes. I can respect that.

For refusing to be humiliated over nothing? No, he really didn't.

@JuiceboxHD176 "Wanna trade?" in that context WAS A JOKE... He and ANYONE WITH A BRAIN CELL would know it was a joke, because she wasn't ever going to trade jobs with him, whether raking sand versus lifting/leveling the stage... or a sh*t-paying Personal Assistant job for a sh*ttier NON-paid internship. It was 100% to LIGHTEN the mood a moment, and SHE entirely decided to make a fight out of it.
Could he have acted "more professional"??? Sure... She could spout her BS and he could've just ignored her... OR even just agreed... whatever...
BUT fired? Humiliated? No. NOT deserved in the slightest. Comic levity is a coping mechanism used ALL OVER the professional world. There was NOTHING wrong in the sentiment,.. even if he admits he wasn't the most professional person.
AND frankly, good for him OR ANYONE who refuses to apologize for something completely unworthy of an apology. If you haven't earned an apology, I'll take a bullet first and you can STILL go f*** yourself, because I wouldn't touch you if God invented a pecker-tree.! ;o)

I'd hate to work for you, much less for absolutely zero compensation. Then again, I would never put myself in that position.

@JuiceboxHD176 Okay... How about the FACTS... This "Care to trade" remark and the person he spoke to is NOT what got him fired...
Let's start there for this conversation. On that sole event, no, he didn't deserve it... and claiming such is simply ridiculous... It's a witty response spoken countless time through countless job-sites and workplaces and even from the lowliest of employees on minimum wage to the highest brass in management or corporate... USUALLY to the vast majority of everyone having a laugh...
BECAUSE OF COURSE a CEO isn't going to pick up the brush and hand over his 6 or 7 figure a year job to the janitor to take up mucking out toilets on minimum wage. It's the whole POINT of said joke. NOBODY in respected or respectABLE businesses has ever taken it seriously.
"MTV is a trusted name in the entertainment industry." Um... barely. Largely they're not taken seriously, and weren't even in their "hey-day". Industry insiders STILL point out the laughable points of "Road Rules" and "Jack-ass"... and the inevitability of practically every branch of MTV's original business models leading to deaths, injuries, degradation, exploitation, and a LITANY of litigation that saw them dragged through courts and exposed for the nearly criminal enterprise they've always been... JUST because teens idolize the antics behind the cameras in their magazines and through th elens of The Rolling Stone doesn't mean anybody else in entertainment give much more than a large turd for the company. Their channels aren't even trying to "hold brand" let alone promote it at this point, in spite of being a large original contender to bringing life to "Reality TV Serials"...
Finally... Do you know WHO gets so bent out of shape over a smart-ass remark? Pretentious little nobodys and liars. Those are the people who depend so richly on "keeping up appearances" that they lash out automatically on the slightest sense of humor that might be at their expense.
MTV has since practically collapsed under the weight of its own pretentious BULLSH*T... so go ahead, and act like you know everything if you wish.
Had this "Tattoo Monster" done anything wrong? Probably. Getting physical, even in sport activities with "Higher Ups" on the hierarchy is NOT usually what one should engage in at work... BUT one probably shouldn't be playing basketball or football beyond the casual game of horse or just tossing the ball around unless it's somehow a "Team Building Exercise" sent from Corporate in the first place... SO nobody had grounds that couldn't be reversed upon them until the pretentious little assistant (probably got bribed) had her hissy-fit... over a humorous REMARK... barely worthy of "joke".
Your own discriminatory ideology against people with ink in their skin is also QUITE TELLING of your probably pathetically pretentious nature, too... SO I doubt you'll bother reading all this, and I don't really care WHAT you might think of me or him... ;o)
