I own a panel/body shop. I've never ever sprayed a car nor a wheel in my life. I saw a gap in the market, I worked a a cleaner at motor vehicle dealerships; saved up money & bought tools over 2 years. I gambled by hiring a spraypainter & sacrificed my car to be a mobile business. Today about 120 cars run through our panelshop per month even though I've never been to college for it. I taught myself to become an entrepreneur & businessman.
If your head is screwed on properly & you're determined in your goals; that difficult path becomes a remarkable journey. Ask any business owner if they regret their struggles...
Politicians like the majority or employees ONLY sees it as a job; 10am is tea, 1pm is lunch, 5pm they don't answer calls anymore.

That is exactly the problem. Laziness. I agree with you in that having a degree is not the ultimate solution.
My point here is simple. If we don't have minimum qualifying criteria we're going to have anyone entering the field. By anyone I mean people with no education at all. People with no common sense at all.
There is the danger of hiring people with qualifications who still don't have common sense but at least they qualified to do something. Add experience in the free market then we might have solid candidates.
There are also people with qualifications through experience. They didn't go to university but they know everything there is to know about farming. That person could definitely be the minister of agriculture.
My main point is we need to have qualifying criteria.
Congratulations on your success running the business by the way. Lots to learn

Congratulations on your business, you seem to have good traits "courage and determination". What you doing though it might give you more money than ministers but it doesn't need you to be extremely intellectual competent, it can not be compared to the sophistication of the ministry of energy, Finance or health for example, in these ministries intellectual competency is extremely needed, look at the best government we have had in the past the cabinet of Thabo Mbeki, it had many highly educated people e.g Trevor Manuel was a chemical engineer and Thabo Mbeki had Master degree in economics from UK and during those days the rand to Dollar was R5, Mbeki paid off all the debts of Apartheid government, you can not be a sophisticated thinker and leader without best education.

✌🏼 Consider yourself an unicorn. Entrepreneurs often possess a unique neurological profile that predisposes them to take risks and withstand significant stress. This profile is rarer than one might think. Their tendency to take risks suggests that their reward system functions differently compared to those in traditional 9-to-5 jobs. It’s one of the deeply frustrating punchlines I hear coming from commentators in SA saying ‘the country needs more entrepreneurs’ - I’m afraid the research suggests that that may not be the solution.
Regarding qualifications for politicians, while an academic degree could serve as a reliable filter, it is important to keep the door open for experienced experts in related fields. The challenge faced by democracies, even in the UK where many politicians are highly educated, is the discouraging influence of the media-both formal and informal. True talent and ability are often deterred by the scrutiny and smearing that comes with political life. The question arises: why would someone choose to become a politician for a relatively modest salary when they could apply their skills elsewhere and earn significantly more, without the associated vitriol directed at politicians and their families? The media and news culture albeit critical for holding power accountable, must take a significant share of the blame for the current state of democracies worldwide.
We need to rethink how we hold politicians accountable whilst making the position of leadership of a country attractive and once again, prestigious.

Kat, look at Angie Motshekga. She has tertiarty education but was completely incompetent in her role as Minister of Education - a role that she actually had experience AND qualifications for....now the good Lord forbid she is now Minister of Defence! In my trade as a graphic designer, I am completely unqualified with no diplomas, but as I have 30 years working experience in my trade, mostly self-taught, I actually find myself dealing with designers who have university diplomas who cannot even set up a document properly for press. I personally think that our education standards have dipped because tertiary institutions are more focussed on diversity propaganda than teaching the subjects which matter. At the end of the day, meritocracy based on a successful working experience is far more important than any degree.

  • @moo2u21979

I'm somewhat torn on this issue. While I don't place a high value on degrees if someone has extensive work experience in the field they'll be managing, I recognize that until recently, degrees were mostly accessible to the wealthy or those entering specific professions. I've observed that only about half of the people I know have degrees. Of those, many pursued degrees that seem pointless, and almost none are working in their field of study, except for the accountants, lawyers, and doctors.
A good example is someone I know who started as a general warehouse worker right out of high school. They now run a large logistics company, having gained real knowledge and understanding of the industry from the bottom up, continually upskilling themselves along the way, yet they do not have a degree.
There needs to be a balance between real-life knowledge and formal degrees.

  • @Ilovedoggie313

Intellectual elitism and snobbery here, unfortunately. Tertiary education does not automatically make one more competent, and nor does the degree give one integrity. • @Ilovedoggie313
      @Ilovedoggie313 Před měsícem +7

@@himynameisjumbo I agree with you. Education is vitally important. The emphasis should be on improving one's skills and knowledge all the time. However, there are many different ways to do that. I studied at three different universities, one in the U.K. and two in SA. Regrettably, I discovered that certain degree courses lacked critical thinking, and instead coercively pushed a particular narrative, which one had to remain faithful to in order to pass and do well. I suspect this is why many graduates today think colonialism was entirely bad without ever seeing the complexities or nuance, and why Helen Zille faced an onslaught for her tweets. The bottom line is that one does not require a university degree in order to be an elected Member of Parliament, and whether one is a matriculant, university graduate or academic, the system does not discriminate. If we move to a system whereby only university degrees count in order to be a politician, then we are excluding a substantial percentage of our citizens and going down an extremely dangerous slope!

At the same time there must also be an audit on all alleged degrees obtained. We have allegations of degrees sold at UNISA, Fort Hare and University of the North. The party with the most degrees did not even start building the promised school. Results must be the preferred outcome nothing more nothing less.

He works hard, has integrity, and really cares about discharging his responsibilities to the benefit of the country. To disparage him publicly like this because he did not have your opportunity to get tertiary education is shameful. Don't abuse your platform and your many capable viewers who preferred to get on with life or had no choice but to do so. Many highly successful business people didn't even finish school!!! Add to this, the mindset promulgated by modern education today is not conducive to entrepreneurship but to merely getting a JOB.... just over broke. Business schools and universities are full of lecturers who have never even tried to start a business. Education at these institutions can often kill initiative and creativity. This does not mean I don't agree with your view, I just want to point out that a tertiary degree on its own is not a guarantee of what one can expect, that said nothing stops these politicians from persueing a qualification now, in fact it would be a testement to their commitment within the roles they find themselves in. The second is their disdain for education. "Clever Blacks" was less a compliment than a curse. This has contributed to the growing indifference to education in the black community.
The point about Gayton is a fair one. He is loved and adored by many. The question we should be asking ourselves is: Should we be making rules to accommodate the exception or not? We can easily find the answer to that by looking at the tragic history of the ANC.

Outstanding citizens were identified, self taught Mechanic, for example, will mentor kids who show interest in that field, who for some other reasons cannot afford further education or simply lack interest in books but have insight in that particular field, my point is,if a person is naturally gifted,he /she will surround himself/herself with experts to complement what he naturally knows. If people in leadership positions can develop, concise,it will remind them that they should account to the nation at the end of the day and strive to be excellent like Oom Piet,as well as Gayton.

I have only a diploma and far outshine and perform post doctorate individuals in my field. I do however believe that certain categories like doctors, engineers, lawyers and so on it are vital to have your degree and post graduate degrees. I wrote a comment, edited it, and deleted it to get some peace on this matter. SA is not in a place where tertiary education should be the benchmark right now because it would exclude the majority. Tertiary education is often for the privileged and/ or not relevant to the unique problems we face. Many skills required have no tertiary equivalent.
For me, relevance and a willingness to embark on continuous education should be criteria we are looking for, as well as morality, honesty and a character of wanting to serve the people. Ubuntu and forgiveness must hold sway because of how the past has affected us all. But basic education, reading, writing, language skills and computer skills must be there for a start; it is clear for many of our politicians that is not the case.
As for ex-prisoners, I am not sure the constitution would allow time served to be translated into a life punishment; yes I know trust relationships have been damaged but we must give people a change to reform as perhaps Gayton is demonstrating. Some will never trust him again, but we all live with a past.

So a piece of paper is more important than actual capacity? Anyone can buy a degree with the right amount of money. Those who can't do teach... Criminal record means nothing, the entire parliament is full of them. We have the right to elect a leader, never to select one. Let that sink in. Smoke and mirrors.

With all due respect - our "education" is beyond useless. I spent most of my mothering time correcting so called "teachers" who didn't have a clue what they're doing. I left school in Standard 7 and my language skills are way above our university degree so-called "teachers" . A piece of paper in this country is worth less than toilet paper. I am snapped up by attorneys, advocates and Judges - whose English I correct regularly. Only one of my three kids has a Matric, yet the two who left in Grade 10 earn far more than my matriculant. Our Matric is a joke. Far more important are skills. The ANC destroyed our education - the one thing our Black politicians hate is real skill. One of my kids works in a butcher and the other is a hairdresser. During apartheid we were given aptitude tests on the first day of high school. From those tests people were put in different classes. Some were put in Latin/Languages (German and Latin where I ended up and hated) but we had no choice and others did cooking, baking, mechanics, dress making, etc. But the ANC were clearly "offended" by that and everyone wanted to be doctors or lawyers - with zero natural talent for it. That's why we now sit with bad professionals who have zero talent and it's killed the country. Arrogance and entitlement have destroyed real talent. Not ONE of the kids threw a tantrum and demaaaanded to be CEO's. Talent is number one and every one of the kids not in the A class was 😊employed - they made fabulous things that they could earn a good income from. Arrogance, entitlement and hatred destroyed our education. The arguments I had with stupid, arrogant so-called teachers about incorrect grammar was a daily thing. Didn't know a verb from a noun. Arrogance has left kids in no man's land. My Standard 7 education has kept me employed every day from 16 to 63. Every. Day. Bring back the school system that made it possible.

They should compile a list of all public officials without qualifications and post it publicly. So we the people can see who they are. Following that, in order to proceed in their positions they need to enroll in tertiary education to get the qualification. If not they cannot have the job. Experience in that position should be a factor as well. We grew up being hounded to get degrees and the people running the country are not held to the same standard. Jokes. We’ll take our degrees and move overseas where they count.

I am divided on this, On the one hand Mazone and Steenhuizen may not have "qualifications" yet they do very well in their positions, on the flip side we see eff with "qualifications", however they got them and they show no capacity for being able to run a country.
