I have listened only three minutes and I am already so furious.
I commented on Roets's program the other day, where he was dancing with America:
"The western inheritance you refer to, that gave us "the things we hold dear", was built on extensive colonialisation and slavery, the deprivation of others' freedom and appropriating of what was dear to them. I'm not sure what else you hold dear in what seems to be a sort of tentative exceptionalism - the most dangerous thought to civilization - unless exceptionalism unconsciously forms part and parcel of what we "hold dear".
I am so glad you picked this up. Many commentators are simply to dumb to do this very difficult western foxtrot.
I am not a westerner, I identify as African, and I detest the fact that the only Africa that is acceptable to many whites, is one that is westernized. They don't even know they think this way.
I also understand the my whiteness makes me different - and I make sure to deal with it in the most engaging way possible. And that Africa teaches me, not the other way around.

For most of my life I have experienced anti-afrikaner statements and sentiments. In school, university and in the news there was never anything positive to be said about us. Statements like "go back to Europe", "we will drive you into the sea" and "kill the boer " do not tell us that we are accepted as South Africans by the rest of South Africa. In this context I can understand the sentiment that we are a Nation within a Nation, I used to think so too since I had no other explanation for the animosity I had to live with. I actually had to move to Europe to notice that we are not like the Europeans and we aren't European. I still don't understand how we are supposed to consider ourselves a part of a nation who continuously tells us how much they hate us and how we are to blame for all their problems. I decided to think of it as "my people have been here for 9 generations, we have no ties to Europe and nothing anyone says or does can change that I am African". Luckily this has recently started to change. Some positive sentiments towards Afrikaners have been popping up in the news and on social media and a few people from different cultural groups have publicly spoken up about our uniquely South African heritage. I hope that this animosity can be laid to rest soon so that future generations don't have to struggle with this crisis of identity.
