I have listened only three minutes and I am already so furious. I commented on Roets's program the other day, where he was dancing with America: "The western inheritance you refer to, that gave us "the things we hold dear", was built on extensive colonialisation and slavery, the deprivation of others' freedom and appropriating of what was dear to them. I'm not sure what else you hold dear in what seems to be a sort of tentative exceptionalism - the most dangerous thought to civilization - unless exceptionalism unconsciously forms part and parcel of what we "hold dear". I am so glad you picked this up. Many commentators are simply to dumb to do this very difficult western foxtrot. Which the ANC , EFF and MK support. It is also not about etnicity or a country. But what political ideology, that specific people believes in. We have westeners and easteners in our country so does America. The rightwing are westeners and the left wing are easteners. IT IS ABOUT YOUR POLITICAL AFFILIATION. For most of my life I have experienced anti-afrikaner statements and sentiments. In school, university and in the news there was never anything positive to be said about us. Statements like "go back to Europe", "we will drive you into the sea" and "kill the boer " do not tell us that we are accepted as South Africans by the rest of South Africa. In this context I can understand the sentiment that we are a Nation within a Nation, I used to think so too since I had no other explanation for the animosity I had to live with. I actually had to move to Europe to notice that we are not like the Europeans and we aren't European. I still don't understand how we are supposed to consider ourselves a part of a nation who continuously tells us how much they hate us and how we are to blame for all their problems. I decided to think of it as "my people have been here for 9 generations, we have no ties to Europe and nothing anyone says or does can change that I am African". Luckily this has recently started to change. Some positive sentiments towards Afrikaners have been popping up in the news and on social media and a few people from different cultural groups have publicly spoken up about our uniquely South African heritage. I hope that this animosity can be laid to rest soon so that future generations don't have to struggle with this crisis of identity.

Hi Katlego. I think the problem stems from the tags. Christianity, Human Rights, Capitalism and such can also be seen as "Western". I do not think that any South African identifying with "Western" values, makes him or her any less South African.
You're right but you have to remember you're in a country with Julius Malema. You have to say it right. You can't say Afrikaners identify with the west she they are westerners. You don't. The term "Western" is not universally defined. It has more to do with culture than with geography. All South Africans are culturally 'Western' to some extent, by the food we eat, the clothing we wear etc. Australia and New Zealand are technically "Western" even though it's in the East. I am an Afrikaner but I am South African long before I'm anything else. I commented on Roets's program the other day, where he was dancing with America:
"The western inheritance you refer to, that gave us "the things we hold dear", was built on extensive colonialisation and slavery, the deprivation of others' freedom and appropriating of what was dear to them.
I am not a westerner, I identify as African, and I detest the fact that the only Africa that is acceptable to many whites, is one that is westernized. They don't even know they think this way.

Do you know the difference between Westener and Eastener. Western Ideology is capatalism not about etnicity or the country you live in.
Easten ideology is communism. Not who you are or in which country you reside. Katlego should explain this because she knows the difference, it can cause division.

The fact that we have inherited western culture does not make us westerners. We are from Africa, this is our home and you are so right, we must avoid people that try to divide us.
yes true but to explain it to a person who is from a truly western society, especially when south africa is now a mix of all different cultures and countries of origin. The term "Western" is not universally defined. It has more to do with culture than with geography.
