    I am not certain, but I think this small table was a Portable Phonograph Stand, for the small
    portable phonographs that were popular in the early 1960s - The phonogaph would have
    sat on top, the 7" 45 singles in the cabinet section, and the 12" LP albums in the lower
    section.
    The hole in the side was for a power cord for an AM/FM Portable Radio that was placed
    in the cabinet section at a later time.
    These quickly fell out of favor in the mid sixties when larger, more capable modular Stereo
    Systems, with Turntables, Amplifiers, AM./FM Receivers, and Twin Speakers became more
    available.
    Very nice work on the veneering / restoration - this could now indeed be an elegant Cigar
    Cabinet !

      @furlvr1961 Před 2 lety +10

      I think your assessment about it being a phonograph stand is absolutely spot on. I've seen others like it with exactly that purpose. It helps that I was born in the early 60s. ;-)

    • @SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648
      @SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648 Před 2 lety +4

      @@steveparker2938 Who knows, it might have been deliberately retro (with respect to the age it was built of course). Maybe it followed something like the Popular Mechanics articles of that era, which were about how to build a neat this, a cool that.
      Or... it was built earlier and was later repurposed from an actual tobacco cabinet.

    • @SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648
      @SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648 Před 2 lety +3

      I would have expected a larger hole, in the rear, wide enough to pass the plug through. Unless maybe a homemade extension cord went through that hole, which would also ease servicing whatever was placed inside the cabinet and let more than one item be placed inside the cabinet. But again there was no place reported where the socket end would have been anchored (unless it lay loose).

  • @aussiegirl5050
    @aussiegirl5050 Před 2 lety +39

    Fascinating. It looks amazing. I’d love this cabinet next to my armchair. It would be perfect to house my diary and planner and other stationery accessories so they would be within easy reach of my chair. There’s room on the bottom shelf for whichever book I’m currently reading, or a place for my iPad and of course room for my coffee cup on the top. If there’s any residual smell of tobacco, even better, as it would remind me of my dad.

    The name of this video should have been "Trust the process". The one aspect of your videos I adore is how you bring the natural wood back to its original glory. When you started applying the peel & stick veneer I thought *"Oh boy, he ruined it"*
    But I should have trusted the process. You proved me wrong. The final piece was far more beautiful than I could have envisioned. Just lovely.

He uses his 40-ish years of professional experience to expertly restore a beautiful antique or vintage piece and at the end he humbly says, "I think it looks pretty good." I am always in awe of his work, and his videos have that same calm, meditative quality.

The only thing I didn't like in this one is the color. For me, it's just on the dark side. I like to see the grain pop, so I would have used Danish oil. And then a lighter gel stain for the accent (non walnut) parts. This coming from a non-expert :-)
