This is inspiring. I have some old photos of my parents, taken during WWII, where they met. I could do some 'story' pieces with those as gifts for my family.

Do you use chip brushes with the encaustic medium? I am hoping you say yes, because I really would rather not use natural bristle brushes if I can get away with it.

    • @ShariReplogle

Hi Terri ! Yes I use chip brushes often with encaustic because they create wonderful texture. Chip brushes are natural bristles made from hog's hair. When the brush is described as a "Natural China Bristle " it is made with Chinese hog's hair. These are resistant to many solvents and also work well for encaustic because of their stiffness and ability to create and build up wonderful dry brushed texture . Hope this helps , have fun !

I tried this technique with Aileene’s Wood Glue and my heat gun. I did not get a caramelized look at all. I tried applying it thick on the first sample and thin on the second sample. Neither worked. So I’m guessing that only Gorilla Wood Glue and a certain type heat tool works to give you this caramelized effect. Yours are beautiful!

Hi Toni ! I have not tried Aileene's wood glue . I have tried all of the hardware store brands I could find . I use a torch but several of my students have got a nice result with the heat gun as well. I will look into the Aileenes and see what could be different about it . Thanks , and thanks for sharing !

Shari Replogle what kind of torch are you using? Maybe I need to try one of those. Thanks!
