Yeah, in 1966. Which is around £400 in today’s money. You spend _that_ much money on an instrument, you’d be inclined to get as much out of it as possible.
The word underrated is pretty overused, but it absolutely applies to John. He’s an excellent songwriter, a rock solid and extremely versatile player with some incredibly standout techniques, and he’s written some of the greatest bass lines in rock history. Not enough people give him the credit he deserves
Man. That's just playing bass period. Ever noticed watching a video the bassist is very rarely seen? I would like to see them more and where they're playing on the neck because tabs sometimes just don't cut it. Even reading music don't cut it.

@@Farewelltokingz I see a lot of people here on You Tube covering songs on bass that miss a lot of opportunities. Sl8des up and down. Walk ups and downs and higher octaves covering songs. Especially on 8th notes. If the guitar or guitars are playing Es the bassist should play a little on an octave or two higher. It's still an E and you can fill in walking back down to the same octave.
Bass ain't as easy as I thought it would be when I moved from guitar.
To be honest I really have no clue of the difference between octaves on an open E on bass and guitar but they pretty much match 7th fret on the A string stands out from and open E on guitar. It adds a lot more depth and character to the music. It really makes the bass stand out. Octaves on bass is like pinch harmonics on guitar. Meant to use sparingly for effect but if over used it sounds kind of not so good.
Just like you said. Use your ears.
Perfect example of what I am talking about. ACDCs Let Me Put My Lone Into You. In the intro Cliff Williams on the recorded track walks up to the E octave. Such a powerful bass aspect of the song. The guitars don't until the very end of the chorus. Also not a walk up but the outro chorus hitting that Octave just sounds really good.
@@daveweed2765 A lot of times simple is better. Getting out of the way of others is vital because busy parts can harm songs. The high register of the bass also doesn’t work with the kick drum as well as a low note. Although id encourage it on snare fills as the highs of the snare works with the bass.

I have huge respect for John Deacon and Brian May. Both inspired me to start Bass and Guitar Playing.
We will probably never have a band as musically diverse and genuinely artistic again. The combination of those four musicians was a stroke of nature’s magic.

There certainly have been many bands even more musically diverse and genuinely artistic... but Queen just had that magic, y'know?

@@M1tjakaramazov The above (FNM and Rush) are perfect examples. There's also much of the artsier post-punk and new-wave released in the late seventies and eighties, think Talking Heads or XTC. In the modern day there's King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. This is just off the top of my head.
None of them really touch the feel of Queen, though. Even as someone who's not the biggest Queen fan ever... you can be even more diverse and artistic and still not top them. Rush is the only band out of these I could say comes close; every member is an incredibly accomplished instrumentalist, the music is artistic without being too highbrow, and Rush has a menagerie of unique musical styles under its belt to boot.
Very observant.Johns' playing is so cleaver.He's terribly underrated,never letting ego get in the way of tasteful playing and the song
I love John's playing. Really creative and perfectly executed. His playing, for me, really makes many of Queen's songs be the success they are. Bass is easy to overlook sometimes - but John is right there at the front with his playing, despite being a very quiet and unassuming performer. I love watching and listening to him.
I love some of queens underrated songs which were penned by Deacon like "spread your wings" and "you and I"

John is not underrated, he is actually known as one of the best bass players in Rock music.
Right, I really don't understand why some people say John Is underrated. He Is Rich, famous and still loved and respected all over the world.
I think when people say that they’re referring to how when people bring up great rock bassists, they’ll mention names like Entwistle, McCartney, Flea, John Paul Jones or Geddy Lee but he seldom gets mentioned amongst those names, although he rightfully should

i think that within bassists alone in rock music (and the other genres queen went into, but generally rock), he is definitely seen as an amazing and talented bassist (as he should be), one of the best in his field, but when it comes to queen, he is generally underrated compared to more notably freddie, but also brian and roger, when really i would say they all equally contributed to queen and they are all equally important and talented and queen wouldn't have been the same without any of them. that doesn't mean that freddie, brian, and roger deserve any less credit because they are also incredibly talented, but from people who don't know queen well, john is given less credit for his work and contribution to the band than the other members. you won't find someone who hasn't heard of freddie mercury but not knowing john deacon is not surprising among people who don't know queen or 70s and 80s rock music well. this isn't to put down the other members in a sense or say they should get less credit, they are amazing and talented and contributed significantly to queen, but john should just have more within his career with queen, not with his general talent at playing bass. basically what i'm trying to say is that within only the field of bassists, he is very respected and credited, but when he's looked at within queen as a group, he generally gets less credit or recognition than the other members.
Deacon is amazing! One of my biggest bass heroes of all time.

Regarding his double bass playing, in the 3rd album Sheer Heart Attack, he already played double bass in the songs "Lily of the valley" (at the end, with a bow) and "Bring back that Leroy Brown" (solo in the middle).
For the album A Night at the Opera, he played the double bass with a bow in the intro of Death in two legs (the squeaking sounds behind Brian's guitar) and in '39. What a talented musician!

So that explains why I have always thought John deacon is really a genius. Same as Freddie,Roger,Brian..all multi instrumentalists

When I discovered your channel by watching Kiss, Joy Division, Cure and Muse videos I was ready to comment if you can do John Deacon. But you already did!
I think John Deacon is one of the most underrated musicians ever. Amazing personality, fantastic songwriter and such a great, versatile and unique bass player. I can hardly think of any other like him. From "Son and Daughter" to "Millionaire Waltz" to "You and I," which has so incredible bass harmonies and to "Sail Away Sweet Sister." The bass playing at the end is out of this world. One could have never expected where the bass is gonna take him. It's ridiculous!! Even "Bohemian Rhapsody's" got a killer bass line that harmonizes with the guitar.
Thank you so much for this video, which could be as long as the discography of my favourite band.
Also, if you run out of ideas (because I would love to here those from you haha), Martyn P. Casey is another fantastic bass player ("Into My Arms" has such a special bassline), Carlos Dengler another awesome one, ofcourse Tina Weymouth and also The Killers. I'm not sure who writes all the basslines for them, but maaan! "Imploding the Mirage" album is truly a gem! "My Own Soul's Warning's" killer bass intro, "Caution" has got an amazing bassline too and ofcourse "Fire in Bone." Anyway, I hope you enjoy them, thank you again!!
None of Queen did things by halves...Brian using dozens of chords whilst most used three,Freddie"s multiple harmonies,Roger was also a great drummer.John played beautifully and so accurately, the icing on the cake.
Thanks for pointing out how different was the interaction between the bass and the guitar/keys! When I was a beginner, i was in a band with a piano player, and we always had trouble finding a good relationship between the guitar the keys and the bass. Now I know we shold have listened to Queen more!

@@Beinlausi Nope, op is referring to the intro to Death On Two Legs. Which he did play an upright bass with a cello bow in the beginning of the song. So op is half correct.

Are you aware that the tall, acoustic bass thing is originally a bowed instrument?
@@Beinlausi Yes I am aware of that, but according to various sources on the making of the song. AND the isolated track, the intro of the song is an upright bass PLAYED WITH A CELLO BOW. With electric bass overdubbed playing the same notes.

@E.A.D.G Groove Yes I know a friend who is 70 years old who bought a guitar during the pandemic. I luckily started about a year before but it gave me something to do during the lockdowns instead of staring at my ceiling or the TV all day

Hi Paul. I have been teaching myself to play bass for about a year now. Plenty of time to practise in Lockdown. I'm a huge Queen fan, my first concert was Hammersmith in 79. (The last time Freddie sung Spread Your Wings live) your videos and especially this one on John have been both inciteful and helpful .
@Давид Тухманов yes was lucky in my youth seeing them 7 times with Freddie. As well as Hammersmith I saw them twice at Wembley on the Works tour, Live Aid, and then Wembley, Cologne and Knebworth on the Magic Tour. Great times!

You're right the John did not get the respect that he earned. I don't know how many people have stopped and realized while Brian and Rodger did write some okay songs okay Brian wrote some good songs. But Queen hasn't had any new songs since John quit. John's bass playing is the key to the music that was Queen

John’s sound is predominantly from a Fender Precision with flatwound strings, although he did use a MusicMan Stingray on some songs. There isn’t really anything special going on EQ wise. His recorded sound was a mix of DI and mic’d cabs, which allowed a variety of tones to be obtained.
He used various amps and cabs over the years, so what was used for recordings probably mirrored his live rig to some extent. From 76-80 it was probably an Acoustic 371 stack (370 amp with 301 cab) and from 1980 onwards the sound is far more of a DI’d bass, but he may have used his Alembic F-2B preamp to fatten it up.
This is what has been documented as the amps and cabs that John used live:
1974 - Orange AD-200B amplifier and Orange PCC 412 cabinet
1975 - 2 x HiWatt amplifiers and 2 x Sound City 4x12" cabinets
1976/77/78 - 5 x Acoustic 370 amplifiers, 3 x Acoustic 301 cabinets, 2 x Gauss 4x12" cabinets
1979 - as above with the addition of 2 x Sunn 4x12" cabinets and 3 x Sunn 2x16" cabinets
1980-86 - Alembic F-2B pre-amplifier, dbx 160 compressor-limiter, Klark Teknik graphic equaliser, Peavey speaker cabinets, Sunn 215-BH cabinet, Sunn 412-L cabinet

Brian May said all the guitar sounds were a Vox AC30 of course but if it sounded like a horn or strings then it was the battery powered amp that John made from scratch. So talk about a secret weapon. No Deacon, no DC Amp, no iconic basslines, no Queen .

Excellent analysis...they were very much a theatrical band. Art rock, really. While Roger Taylor is a very good rock drummer, I've always felt he was the weak link...if they would have had a drummer with the understanding and skill of jazz elements the band would have been even better. He played a lot of different styles on A Night at the Opera in particular...I think it's too bad he ditched that and just became a straight rock player. Freddie, awesome...Brian, fantastic...John a virtuoso...Roger?...could have been better.
@cass___ I don't disagree at all with what you said. But of the four, Roger became pretty pedestrian after the album Jazz. His playing up to that point was incredible and I can't imagine the band without him...but after that album any comment drummer would have done. Impossible to replace Freddie or Brian...and John? His input throughout the 80s was crucial.
It’s crazy how I was about to comment on great and somewhat unsung bass players, and then they use Duff to pigeonhole his style. Not very fair I’d say. He ONLY played some of the greatest bass hooks in rock history, making his parts as iconic as Slash any day of the week. And I don’t particularly like GNR. It’s just that Appetite is a masterpiece. A moon shot. We’ve also got Eric Avery of Jane’s Addiction, and throw in John Paul Jones and Darryl Jennifer of bad brains, plus Geezer, and that’s my top list. Next.
