I had an issue of Bassist magazine from the late 90's (I've since found out was September 1999), in which the main article was an interview was with JPJ. I remember his comment on the use of a pick, particularly. He stated that he started using a pick, live, in order to cut through the mix and be able to hear himself over Bonham. It wasn't stated, but I presume this must have happend dring the touring of Led Zeppelin I; as by Led Zeppelin II he was recording with a pick in the studio - Whole Lotta Love & Heartbreaker, prime examples; as described in this video. In the same interview he also said that Heartbreaker was the only Led Zeppelin tune in their catalogue, that he used an effect on; in the form of a leslie cabinet on the recording.

for Immigrant Song….When he is playing those ascending runs for the chorus, the very last one on the "C" Chord he doesn't play a mixolydian he creates a hybrid scale to match the number of beats in the song (which is what REALLY shows his musical genius in my opinion) so the resulting C scale ends up being C D E F G A A# B C…so he plays mixolydian 2X then does that hybrid scale once….super cool video btw!!

The Chorus of Immigrant song is actually 2x A Mixolydian, 2x B Mixolydian, 2x C Mixolydian, and a final run of C Mixolydian with an added 7 right before the last note C. It's hard to hear unless you boost the bass or cut treble on the track.

You plainly dont understand what JPJs playing was all about, you are just stuck with his choice of notes to play.. not important at all..
Jones, as the humble disciple of James Jamerson (like McCartney was) could keep the groove like very few, and with Bonham they could soo magically play behind the beat.. true masters of that. THAT was it, what made Zep so great.
