Sting was heavily armed when he played in The Police. He played bass, foot synths, sang and used a tape echo for his vocals in certain portions of songs to add another layer. And to throw in the kitchen sink, he favored fretless basses.
he was a brainiac!
Sting played a fretless Precision bass with a pick. I can't think of anyone else who ever did this, at least not regularly.
Is that good or bad?
@@onerandombruh there’s no good or bad, it depends on your taste.
Tony Levin... but I still agree with you. Very rare, Unique sound
Jason newstead did in the 90s
Jeff Ament from pearl jam
John McVie of Fleetwood Mac! He's criminally underated.
I've seen him live, solo and with Police. He does occasionally change the basslines to be able to sing while keeping context. Some of the "album" bass line segments are virtually impossible to be done "live" while singing. Nonetheless the guy's brilliant. The band's brilliant. Their less is more approach was a masterstroke.
I also have seen Sting with Copeland & Summers,
also the Marsalis & Hakim driven solo Sting, both in Sydney
(Showground March 1984 tickets cost f*$&ing $25! what a steal! with
The Sunnyboys & Brian Adams supporting - phenomenal 1st concert & still one of the very very best I've seen & I've seen PLENTY. Sting solo Blue Turtles bash was Entertainment Centre 1986 & cost $30 with Yothu Yindi & Warumpi Band too, saw the Oils Angels U2 & BB.King there too just to name a handful.)
I'm a seasoned guitarcheologist guitarasaurus.
As for The Police vs. Sting solo; one can attest truly the former marginally shaded the latter for sheer mindsblown proper style entertainment of the 1st order; whist both being utterly unforgettable unrepeatable unimitable performances of enormous musicality & artistic quality with few peers equals or betters in my long struggle being mentally-guitarded.
I began my guitarsenal aged 9, thanks to Malcolm Young bless his rhythm powerchords RIP 1953-2017 my hero, I was 14yrs old & begged to be allowed to go to see another fave The Police, been keen since Regatta de Blanc was on repeat-rinse & repeat cycle on AM/FM radio in '79 since music was a huge part of my life since boyhood & still is... I grovelled I washed-cars mowed-lawns scraped up the 25-clams pronto cos I could GO! U beauty mum 'n dad!
On one condition;(with hirsute-knuckled pugilistic 3yrs elder neanderthal mate in tow & our pimply pancaked makeupped girlfriends within screaming distance at all times or else! it was safer than houses anyhow back then. we camped between the control tower in the centre of the grass-showground field proper 20metres from the centre of stage being among the earliest arrivals & stood awestruck astonished & amazed all night long; deafening were the amps cranked to 12!)
Two conditions; & we were to come home directly home do not pass go do not collect $200 a strict order. Teen high schoolers need ruelz. But we were seeing The Police, I was 14, we were too cool for school that's 4 sure & keen music elective students all 4 & all & sundry had a total blast! they rocked HARD!.
Both events were astonishing in every way. You just had to be there - like they say well like we lucky old bastards were mate, 35,000-rabid Aussies packed the Showground that warm March eve - glorious.
Peace respect & far far too much rock n' roll is grossly insufficient,
woefully inadequate, and nowhere near enough.

@@matthewtayloryowieresearch1912 I hear ya.
@@matthewtayloryowieresearch1912 I saw The Police at Melbourne show grounds in 84, Oz Crawl on as well as the others you mentioned. Think we payed $20, bargain.
The best concert I've seen.
Saw them in 2008, MCG Australia Day, brilliant again.
I saw Sting Blue Turtles tour 86 in Melbourne and 88, 94, 96 and the Synp and lute concerts.
Great concerts and memories. Cheers
Hey Man, just another great video. Sting is to the most people now a simple Bass Player, but even it is so, he is not he is the songwriter and defently knows what he wants. And in the old Police Days he was a phenomenal Bass Player.
Thank you for pointing this out.
How to play like Michael Anthony of Van halen.
Great job man
Yeah! ✌🏻
Easy. 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555000000000000 etc
@@craigcotter7476 Eddie would make Mikey dumb down his playing so it would be easier to play to. Kinda understandable that a guitarist who barreled away like a mad freight train would worry about derailing if the track wasn't super smooth and straight, but unfortunately this led to Michael's skill being greatly underrated.
Step one: sing better than any lead singer
Graham Maby!!! Please!!! Very dynamic and song-serving bassplayer, yet underrated.
"Ideas to update your playing"...YES! It's so important to find your own style...and WHO you are first then funnel this into your own unique bass playing style! Such words of Wisdom Paul! GREAT video!
Hey man, just found your videos,, ..very cool.. Just a little comment from me.. I'm primarily a singer, and I started very early on, by singing and playing bass, back in the 80's. However I was very stubborn ,and despite a hand dissablity, I always insisted on playing guitar.. However , 40 years later, so now 6 months, I'm back on the bass and singing. Even at 55 yrs old, every time I pick up the bass I find something new, and this actually makes me a better singer. One of your videos on "Immergant song" (Led Zeppelin) chorus, with the mixolydian scale has helped me so much, because I couldn't find it myself.. I've been at it all night, and with time I'm going to nail playing it and sing at the same time.. thanks man! keep up the great work
I like the kick/Bass count visuals without I get lost. 👍
Tks Paul, Sting is distinguished as bass man....breaks a lot of regular rules, one of the greatest.
Great vid.
I find most of Sting's bass work fascinating.
The Police were so good, so capable.
One of the greatest bass players in popular music.
Excellent video thank you !!!!
Thanks. I think this is why Rush were always fans of this band.
Paul, I love this series that you do, absolutely fantastic. I would love you to do one on Adam Clayton of U2 I am a huge fan.
Thanks always for the time and effort you put into these.
Great video. Well researched and well done. Sting's playing with the Police was solid. I always liked the combination of simple lines with more complex lines. And I love the pick and fretless tone he gets.
Awesome video as a bass player love the legendary style of Sting, got to see him on the solo back to bass your LUCKALY in fkin Atlantic Canada where we get like barley any concert it was completely undeniable seeing him laying down that groundbreaking style LIVE!!
Another great clip Paul, love the ones on Peter Hook and Phil Lynott as well - New Subscriber
Love these videos and would like to see you break down Paul Mccartney's bass style.
Great professional review for my favorite band. Thanks Paul 👍
Love these videos
Excelente!!! Saludos desde Costa Rica!!
Michel Anthony Van Halen
man, your channel is great! this series of videos are one of the best on net!!!! congrats from Brazil!
What a super "blowdown" on such a talented and unique pheneoemeon of the 1980's..I think a wee bit underrated as well. BZ
4:11 such a badass photo
Loving your channel, man!
Spot on review. I've been into bass for 25 years. Sting is my favorite bass player. While not the best in technical skills, his syncopated, minimalist bass lines were incredibly dynamic within the context of the song. For instance, I cannot think of a cooler bass line than Spirits in the material world. And yeah, trying to sing while playing some of his bass lines were no walk in the park.
This was very informative. Thank you.
You are on point my friend well done
Great job Paul 👍
Spirits In The Material World. Nuff said.
Fantastico Paul, grazie mille. Complimenti per la chiarezza e professionalità tecnica delle tue spiegazioni (inquesto video e anche in tutti gli altri della serie). Emerge la tua preparazione e la tua competenza e soprattutto la tua passione! Grazie mille e continua così, sei forte! 👍🙏
Leon Wilkeson of Lynyrd Skynyrd next! Would love some southern rock representation.
+ he is really underrated and deserves more attention
Make a video analyzing Klaus Flouride, bass player for Dead Kennedys
Fantastic channel.
very nice, thank you
loved the bit about ghost notes. I feel like 99,99% of bassists fully ignore this. I love the Stranglers, but when coming up with bass parts I don't try to emulate JJ Burnel, but rather play like Hugh Cornwell, the guitarist.
Thank u Paul for your great Videos, I started to teach myself playing bass some months ago and u really helped me to get an interest in theory. Can you do one about Matt Freeman from Rancid, he's my favorite punk bassist? :)
Rachel Bolan from Skid Row
We have similar fav bassist
Great video, I have listened a lot to The Police lately and I have played their Classic Roxanne, as well as Locked Out of Heaven by Bruno Mars, his tribute to this band. I like Sting's bass playing during his solo career too, I think Englishman In New York is very cool=)
This is cool
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Sting is not into bass gymnastics/showing off his technical prowess. He has repeatedly said that everyone in the band, including himself, is there to serve the song. Fancy and technical is not necessarily better. I remember reading an interview where another bass player/interviewer brought up the subject of a five-string bass. Sting sharply and disdainfully replied (paraphrasing), “What’s the extra string for?”
Paul McCartney habits would be great. He’s a big influence on my playing
John Paul Jones and Stevie Wonder! Thanks for a great video. Viva The Police!
Dude your job is awesome.. Can you do how to sound like jeff ament from peral jam?
Use 12 string bass)
Another great video! TimCommerford of ratm?
Here’s an appropriate word that explains this guy: uncopyable.
Please do a video of another plack p bass player: Colin Hodgekinson.
His first Band in 1970 was Back Door: A Trio with Bass, Drums and Saxophone… Later he played with nearly everyone in England incl Whitesnake and now Ten Years After… highly recommendend the, i call it the german days. Not exactly with germans but with Audio/ Record Companys from Germany (remember Dierks Studio) aaah Pete York, Spencer
Davis Brian Auger great HiFi Live CD‘s.
So please check Colin Hodgekinson
Criminally underrated Peter Baltes from Accept.
Unknown Kyle Kyle from Bang Tango
Would love to see a video on Paul Simonon from The Clash
Flea or Steve Harris for the next
i like the talks about mistakes on isolated tracks takes the pressure off :-} sow musicians of all kinds levels relaxe and enjoy the playing and just try making good songs
Paul McCartney for a review please
I saw him live playing a frettless Ibanez 3 times. This bass is in the Message in a Bottle video. On the Synchronicity tour he played an upright cutaway stand up and a Precision 50s with fretts. I sing and play bass together some Police songs are hard to play and sing the rest are impossible.
He also played a Spector NS-2 fretted on the synchronicity tour.
the illustration of the notes you don't play are as (if no more) important as the ones you play : Sting!
please, do Graham Maby (Joe Jackson) & Martin P Casey (Nick Cave and the bad seeds, Grinderman ) and Paul McCartney and Tony Levin and ....
On minute 5:43 you mentioned the secret of Music. Mistakes and imperfections on isolated tracks are not mistakes, the mistake is to hear them isolated. If the Magic Happens when everything plays together, that's music....and today we are killing Music fixing all that isolated mistakes that are part of the Magic of Music...
Music is the whole, not the part.....
Here is a tough one and I know it is jazz but what about Stanley Clark ?
Makes one of the bass player for Dead Kennedys, or the bass player for Misfits
if you can't imagine a better power trio, listen to Rush!
Can someone please tell me what song is playing in the background. I'd like to know. Thanks.
I think it’s “Bring on The Night” from the regatta de blanc album. It sounds like a live version.
0:06 they a a afta me
Uau…. Pena que é curto… ficaria horas aprendendo
walking on the moon.
Listen to Paralamas do sucesso
lets see your sense of humor - How to play like Derek Smalls of Spinal Tap - playing a double neck bass, multiple bass players, improvising when the drummer explodes. etc .... :)
Make a video about Ryan Martinie
I would like to see Kin Deal from Pixies
Perfect vídeo, but how could you not mention Spirits in the Material World???
Please John Myung
Power trio? What about King´s X
How about Billy Gould of Faith No More (especially the album "The Real Thing") ? That would be interesting. P.S. Keep up the good work - this is an excellent series!
Roger Glover please
Please , a "How to sound like":
- Tim Commerford (RATM, Audioslave)
- Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden)
- Jack Bruce (Cream)
Great video btw
Do Steve Harris please!
The "Off the beat" element is a thing called syncopation, playing on the off beats
03:25 - it says SYNCOPATION in massive letters across the screen. He knows what syncopation is. Did you know that 'beat' is another term for drum part? So playing off the beat is like saying playing off the drum part (instead of following it). Example: the drums could be syncopated, but you're playing off the beat, meaning your bass part is actually not syncopated, but it's still correct to say 'off the beat'. Playing "offbeat" _is_ syncopation, and it's one word. An important distinction. 👍
Sounds like Andy summers plays bass parts on guitar while stings playing skank guitar on bass
MIKE INEZ OR STARR. AIC 🎸🎸🎸🎸
How to Play Like Jack Bruce or Geddy Lee Please 😳
Find your own way ffs
Geddy Lee please!
Anacrusis, nothing magical here folks. Copeland is the engine in this band.
Like si por un momento pensaste ver a Charlie Parra xd
I didn't know somebody would want to sound like Sting!!
6:07
How to play like Colin Greenwood of Radiohead
just stalk people and dont pratice ;)
Not the best player.
