    I believe the best bass player is the one that picks up the instrument when no one else wants to and makes it apart of their universe!

    • @Snaily
      @Snaily Před 3 lety +8

      I picked up bass out of necessity because I couldn't make midi bass sound good, and my band already had 2 other much better guitarists than me. I ended up liking it more than guitar and around the time I realised that, I broke both my arms so I was pretty much forced to transition to bass. Haven't looked back since.

      I was never that great with guitar solos and was always first to volunteer as bassist during jams. After a while I decided guitar strimmer find it hardest to get into bands any way, so I started answering bassist wanted adverts.

    I had a lot of people telling me I should adjust my bass higher when I started learning blitzkrieg bop but I’m 6’2 and I don’t think many people know the ramones style. I also got a lot of criticism on using a pick on bass😂 I told them this is how Dee Dee plays and to fuck off

    I have to split hairs a little bit with you on number 5. While it is true that Dee Dee stays with Johnny, there are times when he will play an "inverted" bass line. For instance, Beat on The Brat. Johnny starts low and goes high whereas Dee Dee starts high and goes low. Other than that, you are spot on with this video. I especially agree with t#4 and think most people don't bring up the 1/4 note at the end/beginning of the measure.

    Because off Dee Dee I changed as a child from playing saxopone to bass guitar
    I learned playing with listening and learning every song on the first album where you can hear only bass and drums ( and Joey's singing ) on the left speaker.. and guitar on the right side.. so I I turned everything open to the left ( maybe it is vice versa .. check it out on the original, not the remastered version of the album ).. He was the one I was waiting for.. And off course RAMONES too.. When he left and the first time I went to see the band with CJ, I stoodin front if the stage, my usually place to go crazy when THE RAMONES played live.. I was so nervous.. and then BAM YES this one could not be more perfect.. CJ RAMONE blew my mind and Off course I was an instant fan from the first note he played on stage in Deinze/BELGIUM at BRIELPOORT.. and here I am.. still Ramones fan.. still DEE DEE RAMONE fan.. still CJ RAMONE fan.. ROCK ON 👊👊👊

    Dee played ESP basses for the last couple of years he was in the band. Mostly the orange spider bass (essentially a P bass copy) and he also used an ESP Thunderbird copy. In my opinion, Dee Dee was one of the best bass players of all time. The job of a bass player (also my opinion) is the be the glue between the drums and the guitar and if the music/song needs the bass should be a right fist right in the face that just keeps coming. He did all that all the time, he did the job the band and music needed. Was he the most technical bass player? Hell no, but imagine how The Ramons would have sounded if Victor Wooten was handling the bass, it would be a bad joke. Nothing against Wooten, he is amazing. But not the right person for the job. Also, Dee Dee was great as a songwriter, a lot of The Ramons best songs were written by Dee Dee, and with that a few of the best rock songs of all time.

    I was lucky to see the Ramones at the Stone Pony ( not that big a club) around 1984...Wow! Sheer power! Also saw Black Flag, Minutemen, Meat Puppets in various clubs in the early 80s. (Flag stayed a weekend at the house I lived in due to a busted u-haul trailer). Those bands put their energy into their shows. Off-stage they were all very mellow, thoughtful, down to earth people.

    Also yeah, like you mentioned, in a lot of the early songs i think he plays on a higher octave than the guitar in many songs like "beat on the brat", "chainsaw", "you're gonna kill that girl", etc but "blitzkrieg bop" is on the same octave i t hink

    Great content as always!❤ I used the tips you provided and it made a big difference in my approach learning and performing this song. I wanted to thank you and tell you about how your tips helped. I started playing bass when I was 15 using a pick that was around 1985. As I went along learning some songs and playing in bands around 6 years pick playing I slowly started playing finger style. For no other reason than it felt more natural for me to play finger style. I wanted to do a bass cover video of a Ramones song and it just didn’t sound right to my ear me playing finger style. It had to be in the Dee Dee style of pick playing. It was very difficult at first. My ear told me Dee Dee was a fierce down picking maniac. I never tried to play Ramones song or any punk songs. So who would know these things, Paul De Bello! After watching your video…several times. I picked Spider man & I wanna be Sedated and practiced using your tips. Took me some time my friends. Sedated came together and I made the video with help from a pro drummer friend. I’m still working on Spider Man. I really enjoy your videos! Thank you Paul De Bello for helping me along my bass journeys!

    Very good analysis as always, Paul. But one thing is not entirely correct. Dee Dee Ramone played Fender Precision bass most of the time. But in the last few years with the Ramones (1988/89) he switched to ESP. First Precision-like ESP basses, but also a Thunderbird copy of ESP, albeit with a Precision pick-up. Besides, the band didn't like that bass that much. Therefore, the new bassist C.C. went with old traditions and again used a white Fender Precision Bass.

    ok, ever since i started bass i only downpicked. its the easiest way to play bass, if you have atleast a bit of power in your arm. i never alternative pick. thats too much for my punk brain to take. Big love to Dee Dee !

    Keep it simple.. Have your own style..sometimes you don't need to follow the rules to be a good bass player.
