The Most Important Cartier Release in Years | Tank Must Solarbeat

  • After a 5 months wait, my Solarbeat is finally here. I think this is a most important release for Cartier because the tank is their most renowned watch, but it's been out of most people's price range. With the revival of the Must line, Cartier tries to give budget conscious people a Tank. Did they succeed, or have they diluted the Tank down too much? Watch to find out!

    I was chasing after the Solarbeat throughout December, and to my dismay, I heard from many retailers in London that they were out of stock. A Christmas miracle happened on the 26 December when I found the last Solarbeat in a boutique and bought it in a heartbeat! Loved it since - glad you do too!

    Congratulations Max on the new Cartier Must Tank Solar-beat, the watch is absolutely beautiful and no difference with the Tank Luis Cartier. The Solar- beat technology is a big achievement by Cartier, offering a power-solar quartz movement that it will run for at least 16 years, before its rechargeable battery needs to be replaced. Such amazing how Cartier developed a technology, using photovoltaic cells underneath the roman numerals without compromising the aesthetics and classics of the watch. For me, is a Tank and looks like the Tank, keeping the same classic and luxury and also, keeping the history for more than a century. I’m also at the waiting list at the Cartier boutique and I was debating between the Solar-Beat and the XL model with the in-house 1847mc automatic movement however, the solar-Beat is a win-win due to the size and designs from the classic Tank Luis de Cartier. One more time, congratulations 👍👍👍

      Lucky man! Here are my 2 cents. For reference I have a 6.7" wrist. I take photos a couple feet away from the mirror to see how watches look on me from others' vantage point. The last thing I want is to look like a 10 year old boy wearing his dad's watch.
      The Medium Santos de Cartier looked slightly too small but gun to my head I would still choose it over Large due to my aversion to date windows in general and most especially on dressy watches.
      As far as the Santos Dumont goes XL looked slightly too big lug to lug, almost like a small plate due to its combination of thinness and square shape. Unfortunately no other size was available, but it's probably safe to assume Large would have suited me better.
      Aesthetically I see the Santos de Cartier as a tweener between sports and dress due to its chunkiness. Which is why after a few years of wanting it to be my first Cartier my eyes have shifted towards the Santos Dumont and the Must Solarbeat which seem to be decided on being dress watches, rather than trying to be different things at the same time.
      If you haven't yet I recommend you check out reviews by Minute Mon and YoureTerrific.

      @@felicityw30 I used to think like that when I focused merely on calibers and technology. But if you look a bit further at the design and craftmanship and eye for details there will be a moment when you simply cannot resist Cartier. Maybe, the Chronoflex e.g. Tank Francaise is more for you. You can't tell from the outside but it houses a split chronograph, perpetual calendar and a very handy feature that lets you set the hour hand independently. The Tank and Santos models also have their history and I reckon are as iconic as a Speedmaster and always will retain value. Best regards.

    I’m about to pull the trigger on the solarbeat, but sadly the non-animal leather strap is too short for my 7” wrist. Would you recommend I swap it with the calf leather (AD will replace for free) or keep the original strap and spend for the additional calf leather strap? Is it worth keeping the original strap?

    • @luzlopez8029
      @luzlopez8029 Před rokem

      Keep the buckle and use it should you change it with another strap ( unless you change it with Cartier). I have a Must from the 80's and changed the strap with a deployant (not Cartier) closure years ago. I did not think of recovering the original buckle and now regret it. At that time I bought the watch because I loved the design of the Tank and found the deployant clip and the quartz movement more convenient and affordable. ( I was not a watch person then).

    great review. thanks. yes, would be nice if Cartier reported out more info on the status of deliveries. you hear the news, get all worked up then nothing. and guess what? you sometimes move on to the next big thing. but this is a great opportunity to add to your cartier collection!!

    Hi, Max: saying "Cartier is high quality" is a tautology. And you hit the nail: "When everyone is copying you, you don't have to try very hard to look good." Right, you just have to keep being yourself! Great examples of that are the wine red and blue versions shown at 3:50: no numbers, no indices, no second hand, no date. Only two hands and "Cartier", the seven letters that summarize what finesse and good taste are. Congratulations on your new watch and enjoy it a lot!

    Awesome! While I know some people pine for a Rolex Sub as a highly recognizable luxury time piece...my opinion is the Tank is FAR more recognizable.. and I also feel it's much more classy and refine. I'm stuck between a Tank and a Reverso, although realize they are two different price points.

      Please do Max, Tank or Reverso is my dilemma too... if you could compare a Louis that would be a fair comparison. In the meantime you have persuaded me, the Solarbeat has to be my one quartz watch. Thanks

    It's a nice watch, with great provenance.
    Maybe it's just me, but the Cartier marketing of the solar innovation is a bit overblown.
    I'll stick to my budget Seiko SUP880, which is both larger in dimension to suit my 7.5 inch wrist, which also has solar.
    Keep up the good work. Love your production and content.

    Very nice review!. I'm having a hard time deciding between the large and small for my 6.5" wrist. I already have a solo large and would like something just a bit smaller and more similar to the original tank "normale" of 1917. My local e-boutique has both (large and small) solarbeats available and dunno what to do 😂😂😂

    • @WatchCrunchOfficial
      @WatchCrunchOfficial  Před 2 lety +3

      I would say the large, unless you wanna look very very vintage 😉. Going from modern sports watches to the large tank is already a significant downsize
