PlayStation 3 Hard Drive Replacement Tutorial

  • This video shows you how to replace the hard drive in a PlayStation 3. This video shows you how to replace the hard drive specifically on a PlayStation 3 slim. The method for opening up your PlayStation 3 to remove the hard drive might be different for you depending on the model of PlayStation 3 you have.
    It has come to my attention that Sony used JIS screws on the hard drive cage inside of the PlayStation 3. All guides I researched for this video mentioned that these screws were phillips screws and that a phillips #1 screwdriver, like the one I use in the video and tell people they need to replace the hard drive, would be all they need to replace a PlayStation 3's hard drive.
    You might be able to take out these screws using a phillips #1 screwdriver like I did. But if any of the screws won't budge, you shouldn't force the screws out as you might end up stripping them. You might need to acquire a JIS screwdriver if you don't have one already to remove the screws from your system's hard drive cage.
    This video does not cover any homebrew related software on the PlayStation 3. I cannot answer any questions regarding jailbreaking or custom firmwares as I do not have any experience with PlayStation 3 modding.
    Keep in mind that this video was recorded in 2014. While the methods shown in this video for replacing your PS3's hard drive still work, including replacing the hard drive in your system with a SSD, the links featured in this description might not work like this used to. I update these links as often as I can, but sometimes these links may not be working as sites change over time.

    Still working like a charm in April 2024! So instead of an external hard drive, I did use a PNY 256Gb thumb drive to save everything from my old hard drive and it worked just fine. Also, my restore took a few hours less than my back-up, which was a pleasant surprise. This video is excellent, thank you very much!

    • @bynxtypebeat

      do you still have your hdd in your console or did you replace all of that with the thumb drive hdd

    • @HlotSfan
      @HlotSfan Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@bynxtypebeat So I had the original HDD in the console and followed these instructions to a "T" with one exception -- he says to use an external hard drive with its own power source to back-up your old PS hard drive onto before you switch it out, rather than a thumb drive. I didn't have an external hard drive with its own power source, but I did have a 256 GB thumb drive so I figured I would try that first before shelling out money for a new external HD. I did, and it worked like a charm! My original HDD was still in the PS3, 160 GB, and it took about 8 1/2 hours to back up from the original PS hard drive onto the thumb drive. Then I switched out the original 160 GB PS hard drive with a Western Digital 500 GB hard drive, went through the process as described in the video and then restored all of my stuff from the thumb drive, which took about 5 1/2 hours (in the video, it took him longer to restore than to back-up, for me it was the opposite). Once I restored to the new PS HDD from my thumb drive, I removed the thumb drive and the system works like a charm. I hope that helped clarify what I meant

      @@HlotSfandid you use the same thumb drive to load the new software update onto the ps3 upon startup? Or did you use a seperate one?

    • @HlotSfan
      @HlotSfan Před 23 dny

      @@JoshDambuleff No, I used a second, small thumb drive that I had saved the update onto. The update itself is a pretty small file, so I used maybe an 8GB or 16 GB to store the update. And then every so often I will go and update the update on that thumb drive, just in case I ever need it again.

      @@TheEndofThis Not really useless, but you're not going to get full ~500MB speed that SATA SSDs are capable of.
      Speed is limited to 150MB as it's a SATA gen 1 connector.
      For comparisor regular mechanical drives have a max speed of 80-120MB. So you do get a ~25% speed boost.
      SSDs have another advantage though, no "seek" and "spin-up" times which makes the whole console feel a bit more responsive.
      The difference is not huge but it's there.

    Thanks for this vid. Got my PS3 via a recycling site as a non-starter, so zero cost and was then given a 500Gb disk for free too.
    The original disc was dead, so followed your process for the physical replacement up to the 'two button press and hold to power up'.
    Because the replacement drive wouldn't boot as it was from another device and since it didn't have valid code on it, the PS3 menu allowed me to format the disk in-situ and then after the usual 'no-way-back' warning, proceeded to load up the new system software.
    The only glitch, which was very minor, was the system didn't advise the user to press the X to proceed when the EULA was shown on the screen, so made the assumption I needed to and now we have a happy PS3 user.

    Thanks , this helped alot I just upgraded to a 500 GB drive from a very full 160 on my ps3 slim. Trying to do this getting everything i needed prepped for more than a few months now. watching many instructional videos.finding a way to format to fat32 for my backup of my firmware and HDD. It has been quite a mess and fighting me all the way. When i finished the restore process i got a error.that it couldnt finish, although it did complete to 100 percent. SMH. I resigned in to PS account restored my trophys. But was unable to go into the PS Store without it freexing up and having to do a hard shutdown. I had to delete the PS Store and redownload it, Although, every time i finally figure out a process to solve a problem,and thank someone.... another problem arises. Hoping this time its for good. I am quite computer savy but this whole indepth process has really pushed my patients to its limits. The videos made it look so easy. I have had to repeat all the steps of the upgrade process multiple times till it finally worked. Even to the point of formating the drive for the backup down to within 10 GB of the backup space required. So my ps3 would recognize it. Thanks again, Wayne

      @@bubblestruly6244 No probs dude, I gochu. What's going on is that your thumb drive isnt formatted to FAT32, which is the only format the PS3 reads. Check this video and follow what the guys says, depending on what size thumb drive you have. Mine was 128gb, so I had to go through the extra step of installing rufus, but it worked perfectly for me. Once you have your thumb drive formatted to FAT32, copy and paste the folders and file as originally directed here, then go through the installation steps. It will work! :)

Shortly thereafter, my SSD finally arrived in the mail from Amazon. Here's what I did:
    I used IM-Magic Partition Resizer Free to format my new 1tb SSD (Crucial brand, if you're wondering) to FAT32 Logical partition.

    2021 info: With the PS Store closing for the PS3 in July, I've decided to upgrade my internal HDD from 500GB to 1TB.
    I was able back up my PS3 files with the PS4 Game drive (2TB external HDD) by formatting it to FAT32.
    The video titled 'Format any size drive to Fat32' helped alot.I then installed a new WD Blue 1TB HDD (for laptops, not desktops!) to my PS3 slim, and downloaded the update software 4.87 from the Sony webpage, and still works! Great video dude!
    Hope this is helpful to anyone and everyone.

      I like to ask, how is that PS4 game drive going on the PS3? It’s USB powered, right? I’m trying to figure out what external hard drive is good enough for the PS3 and not buying something that doesn’t work as this guy says to buy an external hard drive with its own power source or adapter. Thanks.

    • @Grayfox82
      @Grayfox82 Před 3 lety

      @@BossBig709 For the PS4 game drive, first I connect to my PC, and format it to FAT32. Once completed, I then connect it to the PS3 and see it if reads it. I used it to backup my files mostly. And, it is usb powered.

    Hey nice video! Do you know if this will work on the newest 12gb PS3 consoles that from 2014? I would think they wouldn't sell such a small capacity system for cheap if the HDD could be replaced so easily, wouldn't everyone do that instead of buying a 500gb for more $$$?

      The PS3 uses an encrypted drive with a proprietary boot format that shouldn't even load on a Windows PC.

    If I don't have a flash drive, I just hope it is be able to it with a external H.D for backing up and restoring I also have an SD card in the original backwards compatible model so maybe it'll boot from there as well. Let me know if you know.

    • @kwbalance108
      @kwbalance108 Před 5 lety

      Using an SD card is fine, just use a USB SD card reader. That's exactly how I did it, I don't have a flash drive on deck.
