    I might be able to provide some insight from a scientific perspective. For the high end nippers, the reason they are so fragile is because the steel has been hardened - where it gets heated and cooled rapidly. If you have ever seen a blacksmith quench a piece of glowing hot metal in a bucket of water or oil, that is to increase the hardness. The sudden change in temperature locks the crystalline molecular structure in place. This is what allows the blades to retain their sharpness. The trade off is that they lack the malleability of normal carbon steel, so the structure is very rigid - but also brittle.
    I believe what you were referring to with the dspiae may actually be a type of brake. I haven't used them myself, so I can't say for sure, but that's what it sounds like. Due to the fragile properties of the hardened steel, they engineered a mechanism to prevent a high force collision that could potentially damage the blades.

      @@GunplaUniversity I try to contribute to the overall knowledge base of the Gunpla community where I can. It has come a long way since I first got into the hobby back in the 90s. I'm happy to see how it has grown - largely based on people sharing information.
      I work as a production engineer in manufacturing, so material science is part of my field. The builders on CZcams share their techniques and experience which motivate me to work on my kits, so I try to provide something in return.

    Wow, great video. Thanks for posting and the info. May I suggested a few to look into: Mineshima nipper d-25, similar to Tamiya sharp pointed side cutter. I find that it's a bit cheaper and very durable. I think it was about $25-$30 US each. I usually do 2 cuts process as well. D-25 or the Tamiya first cut, then the SPN-120 for the second. For the SPN-120, I have to be very careful since the tip breaks easily if cut into the thick runner the wrong way. Yeah, broke and banned 2 of them by my daughter. Sure it was expensive like no tomorrow...LOL. Anyway, after a hundred models or so for the SPN-120, It eventually get dull. But worth the money and if you don't mind to wait, you can find it online with a better price. Thanks.

    going from double blade to single blade nippers is like nailclippers to nippers. $36 seems like a sweet spot for single blade but i saw an ad for $24 Trumpeter. (usually $36). The less nippers crush and the more they slice the better the finish and least whitening.

    That second Hang up on the Dspiae 3.0 is because the stop screw isn’t adjusted correctly. You need to make small adjustments in the stop screw until the nipper blades meet completely flush if the screw is too far in, they will over close and the blade will slip under the flat side causing hang up feeling on close.

    Sweet review sir ~ having tried all those you mentioned I am 100% in agreement with your conclusions! Wasted money on DSPIAE and all the others.
    I always put everything into SPN-120's. It's a relatively cheap hobby and these just make construction a dream.
    Just don't work over a hard tiled floor, damn things have extra gravity in the delicate tips 😭
    One question, do you miss the earlier SPN-120's with those super pointed tips? I sure do for tiny detail work. Now all the SPN-120's have a 'chopped tip' which is likely because everyone was breaking off the points.

    Literally every pair of nippers, if you take care of them, leak oil. Includong Godhand. Its just a sign of good lubrication.

    Somewhat new to Gunpla here. In the USA Gundam store right now, the PN-120s are around $40 and the 2.0 Nippers are around $38. With these prices, is the 2.0 still better than the PN-120?

    • @GunplaUniversity
      @GunplaUniversity  Před 3 lety +1

      at a price difference of 2 dollars either would be a solid choice. at 2 dollars you might as well get the one that you like better esthetically. if it was the SPNs then id say different.

    So which one is better the valtcan premium or dspiae 3.0?

    • @GunplaUniversity
      @GunplaUniversity  Před 3 lety

      if you want the absolute sharpest blade a very close to godhand go with the dspiae. the valtcan blade is a little thicker but youd be surprised at how smooth and premium the nippers feel for a company i never even heard of.
