  • WARNING: NEVER PLACE ANY COMPUTER COMPONENT ON A METAL SURFACE! I sadly repeat an error in this video where I place computer components on the metal chassis of my computer case: THIS IS AN ERROR ON MY PART! PLACE THE COMPONENT EITHER ON A NON-CONDUCTIVE SURFACE SUCH AS WOOD OR NON-SHINY CARDBOARD, OR PLACE THE COMPONENT IN AN ESD-SAFE ANTI-STATIC PACKAGING WHEN NOT INSTALLED IN YOUR SYSTEM.
    WARNING - I will NOT be held responsible for any damages the methods shown in this video may cause to yours or someone else's computer, hardware, software, and/or data, including loss of use of such devices and/or loss of data and/or loss of profits from the resulting inability to use such devices and data. Any information or program you choose to put into use from this video is done AT YOUR OWN RISK. As a precaution, I recommend backing up any irrecoverable data before practicing any of the methods shown in this video.
    This video will show you how to possibly fix a desktop PC that, when powered up, the lights turn on, the fans spin, but NO image or text appears on the screen and NO POST beep error / message codes can be heard (essentially, the computer does not enter POST and does not boot the OS).
    Typically, the CMOS (the component that governs which components are connected to your motherboard and how they interoperate between each other) has become confused and needs to be cleared AND / OR two or more incompatible components are present and have developed a conflict with one another and have to be switched or replaced AND / OR one or more components have gone bad (become faulty) and have to be replaced.
    ---
    Do what the video shows: Disconnect the power cable, remove the CMOS battery, short the CMOS jumper pins for 9 seconds then return the jumper cap to its initial position (only if you can find these jumper pins; if not, skip this step), press your PC's chassis power button switch (to discharge any remaining power circulating in the system), leave the PC unplugged and in this state overnight, then the next day return the CMOS battery to its socket, power up the PC, and if no beep, then disconnect the power cable, press your PC's chassis power button switch (to discharge any remaining power circulating in the system), remove one component, power up the PC, and if no beep then repeat (each time unplugging the PC, pressing the power switch to discharge remaining power, removing a remaining component, and then powering up, and this until the PC beeps at boot).If it never beeps, even when you are down to just motherboard, power supply & CPU+fan, one of these remaining components may be bad
    ---
    Beep error codes differ from one BIOS manufacturer to the next. To discover what the beep error code is trying to telling you, discover the manufacturer of your BIOS (available in the motherboard's manual or on the motherboard's manufacturer's website {on the page for your specific motherboard model}) and then look up the frequency and interval of your beep error code on:
    www.computerhope.com/beep.htm
    ---
    If this is new hardware that you are installing on your motherboard (that has not yet functioned on your motherboard), note that matching bus types of video card to motherboard socket (PCI-E for example), matching socket types of CPU to motherboard socket (LGA1366 for example) or matching bus types of RAM module to motherboard socket (DDR3 for example) does not necessarily signify compatibility. If this is the first time you are trying this hardware on your motherboard, there is a chance that this new hardware is not compatible with your motherboard, despite the same bus type and despite the fact that the new parts fit in their respective motherboard socket. Your motherboard manufacturer's website will have a support page dedicated to your motherboard's model, and on this support page should be a compatibility list for such components as video cards, CPUs and RAM modules. Ensure that your new component is certified to function with your motherboard, and if your new component is not present on the compatibility list, then there is a chance that the new component is not compatible with your motherboard.
    ---
    If your computer powers on but for a mere second or two and then immediately powers down, It sounds like your motherboard is developing a short circuit due to contact with the metal casing. Most likely it has to do with the screws and metal mounting stands (supports) that your motherboard sits on. The cheapest way to fix this problem is to introduce cardboard washers between the screws and where they make contact to the motherboard, or you can buy plastic mounting supports at a computer shop.
    Alternatively, you can always Breadboard it (explained in the following video:)

    Important to note: I always appreciate kind words, thank you for those, but when it comes to questions, well, questions left on this video page generally get responded to LAST in my long list of CZcams video pages (tending to the sheer volume of questions I receive on this video page alone is practically a full-time job for which I do not get paid a dime). PLEASE ensure you have watched and tried EVERYTHING you see in the video, and then have read and tried suggestions from the Description field of this video page BEFORE asking your question, and btw, your question has most likely already been asked and answered on this video page by someone else, so browse the Comments section as well after you have asked your question, and should you find the answer to your question after you have asked it, please do me the courtesy of commenting and letting me know that you have found the answer instead of waiting for an answer from me only to respond 'its fixed now'.

    You are a bloody lifesaver. After not getting any signal on three different monitors (and a TV) even though the PC booted up and everything was working, I was worried (and possibly a bit pissed since I ordered the PC from another country) that either my GPU or mobo are dead, and was ready to return the whole thing.

    THANK YOU! Nice one mate! This worked perfectly for me by:
    (1) Removing and replacing the CMOS battery (I tested it with a battery life tester and I didn't need a new battery).
    (2) Moving the CMOS jumper back and forth (I waited 4 mins before putting it back in its original position).
    (3) Booting from a Win startup/repair CD then, when prompted with the option to do so, loading the 'CMOS default settings'.

    This video was the only thing that helped when my computer suffered the same problems following a fall yesterday.
    I followed the steps, and, as I hoped, it was the RAM; so thankfully just a case of swapping the memory round. And the computer appears to working OK now.

      From the sounds of things, I'd guess that the BIOS chip itself is defective, but I'm just guessing here. It could be any number of factors. Only thing I can recommend is that you Breadboard it (explained in the following video:)

    RodneyDickson,
    You are a genius. You made my day and taught me something that I wanted to learn from a long time. With your easy to understand step by step process, I could revive a virtually dead motherboard. Before this exercise, the motherboard was not beeping and there was no display. A failing FAX modem PCI card and trying to turn the computer ON/OFF few times messed up the motherboard. I removed the CMOS battery and jump the CMOS as you suggested for long enough time. Then when I rebooted the computer I heard one short and one long beep. I didn't have a hard drive and mouse connected at that time. After connecting a HDD and a mouse when I started the computer, I got a single beep and I could go to the BIOS setup and see and set everything. The computer worked.
    Thanks a lot. Keep it up.

    I pulled the whole computer apart to clean it (i was told when i got it that there was a issue and didn't work to i thought what the heck) and then u put it back and thought that maybe there was a issue with other things. pulled everything out apart from the power supply and the motherboard and it did the same thing. something was making a ticking sound but i don't know. So i found your video and did the jumper thing and cmos battery just to be safe and then bam, it booted. So thank you so much :)

    Andrew Wessell Andrew Wessell Andrew Wessell If your computer powers on but for a mere second or two and then immediately powers down, It sounds like your motherboard is developing a short circuit due to contact with the metal casing. Most likely it has to do with the screws and metal mounting stands (supports) that your motherboard sits on. The cheapest way to fix this problem is to introduce cardboard washers between the screws and where they make contact to the motherboard, or you can buy plastic mounting supports at a computer shop.
    Alternatively, you can always Breadboard it: 1)place the motherboard with CPU+Fan on wood or non-shiny cardboard 2)connect all of the case connectors to the board's panel 3)with a power bar that is OFF connect the PC power cable from the power bar to the power supply and the power supply to the board 4)while NEVER touching any exposed component,power on the power bar and press the power switch on the case.If the problem still persists,one of the remaining components is probably defective.Power off the power bar before dismantling

      Try disconnecting all external input devices except for the keyboard, then try pressing the required hotkey after performing the CMOS CLEAR. If this doesn't work, try using a different type of keyboard following the CMOS CLEAR method (i.e. if you have a USB keyboard connected, try using a PS / 2 keyboard, and if you have a PS / 2 keyboard connected, try using a USB keyboard).

I guess as a last ditch attempt (if the PC isn't on warranty anymore) you could always try breadboarding the PC or rebuilding the PC in an opposite sense (see Advanced troubleshooting technique tutorial of how to possibly fix a PC that will not beep at boot )

That being said, try what is shown in the video: disconnect the power cable, remove the CMOS battery, short the CMOS jumper pins for 9 seconds then return the jumper cap to its initial position (only if you can find these jumper pins; if not, skip this step), press your PC's chassis power button switch (to discharge any remaining power circulating in the system), leave the PC unplugged and in this state overnight, then the next day return the CMOS battery to its socket, power up the PC, and if no beep, then disconnect the power cable, press your PC's chassis power button switch (to discharge any remaining power circulating in the system), remove one component, power up the PC, and if no beep then repeat (each time unplugging the PC, pressing the power switch to discharge remaining power, removing a remaining component, and then powering up, and this until the PC beeps at boot).If it never beeps, even when you are down to just motherboard, power supply & CPU+fan, one of these remaining components may be bad

    I am experiencing a strange issue . Some days back I found out that my computer was getting hot and therefore I decided to reapply the thermal paste and replace the stock cooler with cooler master hyper 121 led.
    I did replace the stock thermal paste ( removed it by 95% Iso propylene alcohol) then applied artic silver 5 compound (pea size method), and finally attached the aftermarket 121 cooler master hyper cooler. Finally checking all things at their place and seated neatly, I booted up the computer , however I did not not got the post beep sound (1 beep) - the CPU fan was running , the GPU fan was running but there was no display on the screen. My motherboard has a built in error code embedded card which showed code 77 error.
    So, I switched off everything and began to inspect by removing every component one by one , but all in vain , the problem persists. Then after a while , when I was not getting any solution , I reseated every component back again and booted up the computer still no response got code 77. Then I again switched off and tried to again boot up -I did this procedure "on and off" 2 to 3 times - and suddenly out of the blue the computer booted without any error (heard the pleasant 1 post beep sound). Then my computer ran very smooth like no problem occurred at all.
    Next morning, again the same problem - no boot , no sound , CPU fan running and getting annoying code 77 error . This time I did not opened up the hood however I did switch off then waited for 20 sec. and again boot the computer -got same error - again switched off and boot - got same error, so, I repeated this switch off and boot method for exact 7 times and about ,say, 25 minutes my computer boot without any error, and ran perfectly.
    I am not getting what actually the issue is. Please please help me to figure out the problem

    I've been stuck with this problem for a week now, and I annonce that you, the dankest man alive, are my saviour! I'm flabbergasted right now. I took off the CMOS battery, just put it back in because I couldn't find the "thingy that has three pins", I plugged everything back together, turned my PC sideways, pressed power, and it worked! Thank you very much, man!

    Your video saved my life in a way. I tried doing the same technique to fix my Computer. That I built its just over a year old. I got home one day and no screen no usb output or anything but, fans running. I Then found your video. Tried all that. Put my stuff back together and tried other power supply. Behold I thought it was the power supply. However when I put the old Power Supply back in it worked again. I think When I went to Jump the CMOS on the motherboard. I wasn't giving it enough time and or there might have been static build up or bad connection. Works now. when I followed your steps all is good now. I think its because I took out the ram and let the battery stay out while I jumped the MB CMOS. I left The battery in and computer off when I jumped it before. Thanks I'll make sure next time i Jump a MB I'll leave battery out then try booting like in your video. Thanks a bunch man. I hope its not a fishy Bi-polar Power Supply either. :D

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  Před 7 lety +4

      Thermal paste is necessary between the GPU chip and the heatsink. If your graphics card heatsink came factory installed, then there was a substitute to thermal paste between the two (generally a black coloured tape of sorts between the two). Video cards die out with time and after they have been pushed too hard: chances are yours was just due to go, that's all

    My computer would not post, just the fans spun up. It would not shut down from the from panel reset button either. After watching the video I tested all the power supply output pin voltages as described in a 24 pinout diagram. I then removed the cmos battery, did the jumper as described, removed all peripherals, USB connectors & memory sticks as described in the video. I waited about 10 minutes then put the cmos jumper back in the normal position. I started up the machine and just the fans spun up. I left the machine running for about 45 minutes (because I moved along to the next problem of my day. My attention was drawn back to my machine when it gave out a long continuous beep. I shut it down, added the cmos battery, ram and monitor and it did boot. I added the hard drives, booted it again, reset the bios (since it was modified from the original configuration) and I was good to go. Thanks Rodney for leading me in the right direction.

      The beep error code you mentioned matches nothing in the guide you referenced. From their example 'the beep pattern is 1-3-2 (1 beep, then 3 beeps, then 2 beeps)' That being said, to match their beep error code structure, you have to note the amount of beeps in three sets of beeps, and then once again refer to the guide you've provided. If you need more help with this, they have a link where you can contact them directly on the same page www.dell.com/support/contents/category/Contact-Information/Technical-Support?ref=contactus

      The freezing after use can be a multitude of things: the CPU overheating, the operating system being corrupt, the memory being bad, the hard drive having bad sectors, the power supply being faulty, etc.
      This is how you can test the memory:

      Also, Hiren's BootCD has many freeware testing softwares that may shed some light on the issue.

      disconnect the power cable, press your PC's chassis power button switch (to discharge any remaining power circulating in the system), and then with tweezers or needle-nose pliers you can rebend these pins in the proper configuration (VERY IMPORTANT: ENSURE THEY ARE NOT LEFT CROSSED AND TOUCHING EACH OTHER) and if this is impossible to do or they break off, you should have another FAN power connector on the motherboard elsewhere that you can use.

    Thanks a lot, Rodney, for such a thorough and detailed explanation !
    The situation with my PC is similar, except it boots up perfectly normal in 2/3 of attempts and then suddenly it refuses -- the power LED lights on but then the fan starts howling like a vacuum cleaner and that's it -- the box doesn't even react to my pressing the power button . So I flick the switch at the wall mains outlet, wait a couple of seconds, switch on the mains again and -- voila ! -- the booting process continues as if nothing's ever happened. This is a HP Compaq dc7900 box Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz 4Gb RAM running Ubuntu Linux, and it looks and behaves -- when it does decide to behave -- too good to chuck it to the dumpster. But the fan howl sounds too scary to continue using the beast. That's my dilemma...

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the kind words. Sadly, intermittent issues like this are often too difficult to pinpoint as far as the problem goes. In your case, I'd get it to boot proper, and then put it into sleep mode when not in use so that when needed, you can simply wake the PC without going into that howling PSU scariness. Sorry for the lackluster fix : \

    i have a problem with my pc.
    it started yesterday when i wanted to plug my Projector with pc.till that time everything was fine but when i connected
    projector, the projector screen shows all the white to yellow (screen works perfectly but all the white of screen is yellow)
    I thought it may be projector problem so i connected the cable to my monitor but the monitor too shown the same problem.
    i though connection may be loose so i changed the cable (same type but another) still got the same problem.
    then i took my 2nd monitor but still got the same problem. then i completely formatted my pc and reinstalled the windows but still the same problem.
    Then i bought new VGA cable shown the same problem.
    Now i tried every VGA cable ( i have 3 including the new one) to my friends computer. the two old cable gave me the yellow color on his pc but the 3rd one (new one) worked normally.
    so i concluded that it is neither monitor nor cable problem .... am i true ?

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  Před 7 lety +1

      Wow, is that ever a nutty problem! From the sounds of things, I was going to suggest that maybe the discrete graphics board (the 'video card' if you will) has come loose from its socket and needs to be reseated (removed and reinstalled), but given that two of the three cables are giving issues elsewhere, check the cable connector and ensure that you are not bending any pins (or breaking off any pins) upon connecting: this too can result in inaccurate colours being shown. Hope things work out.

    RodneyDickson I used tips from this video to bring my computer back to life !!! Thank you Thank you. Was pulling my hair out as to why my monitor had no signal, thinking my mobo went south. My computer had been working fine the night before. When I turned it on; no beeps, no monitor signal. As it turns out, I just needed to reset the CMOS, and got signal back. Thank you again. Now onto my other problem , resolving a "Bootmgr is missing". Seems like the more i know about computers the more I get new puzzles to solve. :p

      +RodneyDickson Yeah and to make it worse, the windows disc wouldnt boot through the dvd-rom despite setting it in bios. Ended up repairing it by making a USB flash drive windows install. For some strange reason it would only boot setting primary boot devise in bios to USB. Once windows was installed I set it back to boot from the HDD and all was well.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  Před 7 lety

      Ok, if you had a hard drive installed with an operating system on it, then your machine is having problems accessing the hard drive. If you didn't and are trying to access a bootable CD, DVD, USB or Floppy, you might need to set the proper boot order in the BIOS. Enter the BIOS and ensure the boot order is set in the order in which you wish to access, and also ensure that no other devices may be interfering with the boot process (CD, DVD, USB, or floppy unintentionally left in a drive).

    Hi, want to ask that my pc can start to cmos, no beep sound got display and show pxe e61 media text failure.
    Is it just hdd failure? Or suspect for mbd failure?
    Due to nearest pc shop is quite far so hope for a suggestion. Ty.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  Před 7 lety +1

      Sounds like your problem is directly related to your bootable drive (whether it be USB, HDD, optical, etc). If your hard drive is not defective, I'd go into the BIOS, ensure that the HDD is being properly detected by the system and is the primary boot device, then save and exit. If the operating system still will not boot, and you are sure your hard drive is functional, then your operating system installation may be corrupt.

    Thanks so very much for posting your videos. You are an excellent teacher - on video and through your written material, also. I've already learned a lot from you and appreciate the lessons!
    "You never know, maybe rebuilding the PC in the opposite sense that you took it apart will solve the problem." I think it's such things as this that has always kept me fascinated by the inner workings of 'puters. As much scientific fact as we might rely upon when dealing with them, sometimes it's the inexplicable that will take care of the problem! Being able to get a good laugh out of my objects of interest goes a long ways in holding my interest and increasing my enjoyment, also.

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  Před 8 lety

      +Shauna Russ Thank you for the kind words, and furthermore, an extra thank you for actually reading some of the text I've typed (I can't tell you how frustrating it is to receive questions from others who ask something akin to 'I have the same problem, help' and not only do they not read what I type, but they don't even try what they see in the video!) Anywho, don't mind my rant, I'm handling 1.5 years of comments in the span of a few days, so my frustration is compounded : )

    • @shaunaru
      @shaunaru Před 8 lety

      You are without a doubt a very dedicated person! 18 months worth of comments and you are responding to them - amazing!
      Well, I'm an old, gray-haired, granny, but I've been interested in computers, robots, etc. ever since I started reading Sci-Fi when I was in the 3rd grade (Mostly Asimov, until I started branching out). So, when I discovered there was a Bally game machine that actually could be programmed, if you didn't mind no hard drive (we had to store and run our programs from a basic little audio recorder) and no keyboard (there was the number key pad, similar to a hand-held calculator except there were buttons across the bottom of the keypad - red, yellow & green - I think . . . memory was damaged when I was disabled and I still miss it like crazy - ha ha! . . . So, you push Red button and the "1" digit for "A", the Yellow button and the "1" digit for "B" and the Green button and the "1" digit for "C", etc.) That's the machine that I learned programming on! Anyway, all this to say that years after that, I was responsible for teaching police officers how to use the new program we'd purchased for our first computers at the department, so I can fully sympathize with you about answering the same questions time after time after time, but that was SOP for anything - I'd get teased a lot because when people would come to ask about other procedures, my standard reply was, "It's in the manual, go look it up; I'm busy." Even though I used to use that info to tease cops with, I already knew that it was simply human nature. If a person can whine and get someone else to do what they were supposed to do or to spoon feed them info - they're going to do that. I often think it's also a delay tactic as then they get to tell others, "Well, I'm waiting for an answer from you know who!"
      And then, there are people like ourselves (you are so dedicated and your written instructions were very good - didn't need a translator or anything - so I'm guessing we have similar feelings about such things) who try to teach others and we'd be embarrassed and ashamed to behave like WSMs (whining, sniveling, malcontents) when we know the answers are there for us! I also know that there are a fair number of people out there who, for whatever reasons, really did miss the self-taught, research boat and even have problems with comprehension and there's no way I can feel badly or cross about helping them over and over.
      And, of course, this behavior is not limited to geeky stuff - one of the sites where I watch TV series has a nice comment section and they always have a link to IMDb for the particular show. So, when other viewers start asking such things as, "Who is the person who plays Juana Dough?" or "the actor playing Jojoe is really familiar - what else has he played in?" The comment area is supposed to be used only for giving comments about the actual show, so on top of being stupid questions, they are also against the rules . . . Whatcha gonna do? Find a like minded person and laugh about it is probably the best solution!
      Anywho, thanks for your kind response and please do not feel obligated to reply to this comment. You absolutely have your hands full with responses and I'd prefer you get those done and make some more videos! Thanks for sharing with us!

    • @RodneyDickson
      @RodneyDickson  Před 8 lety

      +Shauna Russ Well, what you refer to as 'dedication' I can refer to as simply me having too much free time on my hands : ) Seriously though, I really do appreciate helping people (that's why I make these videos), and during my 1.5 year hiatus, I always planned to come back to CZcams comments one day (didn't imagine that I'd get to answer all remaining comments on all 720+ videos, but slowly but surely, I got it done : ) I'm quite the sci-fi fan myself, and I was always drawn to video gaming (building computers was the conduit to getting to play my favourite games, so gaining the knowledge and experience became necessary : ) Incredible how far programming, and technology for that matter, has come. I myself never had a knack for programming sadly (I love playing the games, but get frustrated with the programming aspect). I did code some basic in high school, but it was all very 'basic' stuff (no pun intended). Heh, I love your 'it's in the manual' response: prior to taking the 1.5 year hiatus, I would lay out possible response scenarios in the Description field of each video page (you can see evidence of this even on this very page) and would systematically copy and paste each response accordingly in order to try to help others in a 'troubleshooting' frame, but since my hiatus I have decided to frequently default to this canned response (which does not apply to this video I feel) 'There are more suggestions in the Description field of this video page as well as suggestions from other viewers in the Comments section of this video page: I sadly know of no other fixes other than these, so turn to these sections for more information. Good luck' which covers all of the bases that I would have previously covered in my step-by-step approach anyway (not to mention that perhaps it will incite viewers to do a bit more reading instead of expecting to be spoon-fed the answers they want to hear). There is no pleasing everyone though: for as many people who don't get enough solutions in the video, there are those who want the answer in a short, 30 second clip, and who quite frankly complain when they actually have to watch a video and have to go through steps and scenarios (I'm thinking that more and more the grand majority of today's youth are being spoiled by access to information, not to mention that they all seem to feel entitled to it...maybe the Internet IS ruining society, but what do I know?) Regardless, it's always a pleasure to speak to someone who can carry on a pleasant conversation, and thank you for going down memory lane with me : )
