This is the classiest iconoclast song ever. He’s putting up a front, saying how he plays the sax just how he feels and gets drunk dying a perfect struggling musician’s death. I want a name when I lose, trying to put glory around my grand failure. But he admits at the end he cried when he wrote the song, showing off his inner loneliness, but still defiant-sue me if I play too long! As someone who gets feeling socially apart, it’s that conundrum of making yourself happy by being who you are, but seeing how that doesn’t always win you friends or the banal enjoyment you see others have. Sorry to get deep but steely Dan songs are rarely just goofs. He’s got a point when he writes.

That’s what was so great about growing up in the ‘70’s and early ‘80’s! Everything from bands like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Queen, Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, etc. to Steely Dan, The Steve Miller Band, Hall and Oates, Fleetwood Mac, Earth Wind and Fire, The Jackson Five…I could go on and on! We listened to and loved it all! Even most radio stations back then played a wide variety of musical genres. We were so lucky to have grown up in such a musically diverse time with such wonderful artists!

It's always so good to see someone discovering Steely Dan, such a great band and so many songs to uncover. FM, Black Cow and My Old School are must hears. Another band you might like who are Dan-like in terms of arrangements and engineering is Tears For Fears. Woman in Chains is breathtaking. So glad I discovered your channel and great to be along for the ride!

Hey Zay! Jurist jumped on board. Love the reactions man and your enthusiasm for music. I’m 62 years old and have seen Steely about 15 times in concert - to see that musicianship live is crazy. In my opinion, Black Cow and FM are “must listens”, you’ll go crazy with the smooth funk. You may recognize the beginning of Black Cow because it was sampled on a popular Rap song. FM is just “stank face” funk. Then there’s the 2 rock songs with crazy guitar solos, My Old School and Reeling in the Years, and finally the song Aja - iconic! It’s a smooth, jazzy song that just takes you on an adventure and the 2 drum solos towards the end are just crazy. There’s just too much not to play, enjoy the trip further down the Steely Dan road - I’ll be in the backseat, can’t wait!

Yeah!!! Music for grown folks. At this time this is my favorite Steely Dan. FM and Dirty Work you have to review. FM is about radio changing from AM to FM which was long playing rock song stations and public radio. There is a movie called FM. The show WKRP is based on movie. Dirty Work was first band single. Record company wanted them more marketable so the vocalist was temporary member of band. ENJOY!

There's "Dirty Work" sung by David Palmer, "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Hey Nineteen", "My Old School", "Show Biz Kids" (my personal favorite), "Bodhisattva", and "Here In The Western World" to name just a few more. Me too. I was at a restaurant in Gatlinburg, TN last week on vacation. A young lady was playing songs on the piano and singing in the restaurant. She played a bunch of McCartney songs while we ate. Right before we got the check, I went over to her tip jar between songs. I complimented her playing and asked if she knew any Dan. She smiled so big and said, "yeah, 9 songs". I said we're about to leave, she said what's your favorite, I said "Deacon Blues". She played it and I sang along and made the family wait until were done. It was awesome.

With SD you can pretty much take all of their song titles, put them into a hat a pick one out. It's sure to be a great one. Try "Black Cow", "Do It Again", "Reelin' In The Years", "Dirty Work", "Hey Nineteen", "Aja", or whatever you want next. All the characters in their songs are among SD's collection of losers, marginals, and idealists.

I became a Steely Dan fan after first hearing Can't Buy a Thrill. When this album came out in 1977, I laid on the floor of my living room listening to it on my headphone, over and over and... It's hard to have a favorite song, but I'll admit I've listened to Deacon Blues more than any other song.
