    Considered by more than a few---myself included---as the greatest guitar performance ever captured on film. One must understand that Stevie was doing this on a guitar with unusually heavy strings and high action. I've read quotes from guys who tried playing Stevie's guitar and couldn't bend those strings to save their lives. Yet Stevie is able to manhandle them and play with flawless precision. He was also a man of kindness and humility---despite all the swag he displayed on stage. There will never be another like him.

      I often set aside time to feel pity for anyone he fingered…

    • @Starriddin
      @Starriddin Před rokem +15

      His strings were so heavy they would split his fingertips. Stevie would superglue them closed and keep playing.

      I'd certainly vote this as Best Performance On Video, and THANK YOU cameramen who'd seen him do this on previous evenings. They knew how to film it, where to stand - but still - KNOWING how to do it and being there are different things. Congrats to those cameramen. SRV cut his performance-teeth in Austin, Texas since the late '70s, a town with hundreds of live-performance clubs almost every night. Full of good guitarists - most of whom were wannabe's and never-will-be's, but they all learned something more: "being good or great is one thing, being entertaining - being a showman - is something else. Take the leap. Learn more." There were backflippers, there were acrobats playing leads, doing handstands on keyboards... anything to distinguish themselves above all the others. But this performance is transcendant - he takes us thru so many tempo and volume changes, visiting so many styles of blues in one number. And we're so drawn-in by these direction-changes that the audience knows when to erupt out of sheer amazement.

    In case it hasn't been mentioned before, Stevie Ray is self-taught. Didn't read or write music. He was a natural, he had a gift and we are so lucky to have enjoyed it for what little time we had him.

  • @djinx296
    @djinx296 Před rokem +8

    Speechless...and then he puts the guitar behind his back w/o missing a beat. Then you feel like this can't be real, and you begin questioning everything you ever thought was true. I understand, I experienced it live in 1989 when I had no clue who he was, I just went because my friends were going. I don't think my jaw left my chest until we went to eat afterwards. Iconic.

  • @roguemerlin1969
    @roguemerlin1969 Před rokem +2

    SRV us considered the GOAT. He could play behind his back better than most people can with it in front. SRV couldn't read music and never played a song the same way twice. He just played what he was feeling at the time. May he rest in peace.

    @tylerdurden2460 Před rokem +3

    2 things: he not only played behind the back, he unplugged it, spun it around, plugged it back in, and NEVER MISSED A NOTE. If you're just listening without watching, you'd never know it happened. 2) while this version is more widely known, his version at Austin City Limits has better quality sound and video, and is worth checking out.

    SRV was and still is a LEGEND... His talent was totally God given and he played the guitar and sang with everything in him.... He was truly blessed and I myself as well as thousands of others saw it and felt it... Even now on DVD'S of his concerts you can still feel and see his overwhelming emotions as he plays... and CD's just listening with the volume turned up and your eyes closed you can still be overwhelmed with his talent... I know he was the best I've ever heard or watched...and I love him still to this day and always will... He's my therapist when I'm down and each note he plays takes my mind and my thoughts to another dimension..... I thank God for Stevie Ray Vaughn and his awe inspiring musical talent and stage presence.... We suffered a terrible loss at his death but God needed him with him... I totally understand... I plan on seeing them both and so many more loved ones one day in Heaven when my time on earth is done.... I'm looking forward to it.... 🙏🙏🙏 What a great, beautiful and joyous reunion!!!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🌹🌿❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🥰😎

    Everyone talks of God given talent but I just try to wrap my head around how much practice was required, how many hour dedicated to one single thing. This is why musicians on the whole were so much better than the ones of today. So many distractions to your time now than back then. The guitar was his xbox, cell phone, computer and tv and more, all rolled into one.

    Was privileged to see him play many times in small and large gigs - it was ALWAYS like this! As if God was dictating and SRV, and his beloved "Number 1" guitar, were simply letting the music flow through . . . Hard to explain. There were never breaks, errors, repeats, etc. A God gifted and beautiful soul taken home far too soon.

    Saw him in my freshman year of college. Pinnacle of existence. And transcendence. Got back to my dorm at midnight pulled out my own guitar and cranked it under Stevie's spell until a squad of RAs were bangin on the door. And then a few weeks later...dead. Crushing blow for all of music. So glad though that his genius was documented as well as it was so future generations can appreciate his mastery. All the same guitar (in its battered glory), all through tone extracted from the wood, strings, fingers and electrons with little else in between.

    How blessed are we to have the many video recordings of a true musical legend. Stevie was said he was married to his guitar and obviously he meant it. He was, as Eric Clapton said, an open channel allowing the music to flow through and out of himself completely without ever seeming to get lost by thinking too much in the moment and that it was something rare that couldn't be learned through practice or repetition and must be fundamentally inherent. I honestly love and truly miss Stevie Ray Vaughan..his eternal soul is a kindred brother to many who never met him on Earth.

    Rest in peace to that hero. I was lucky enough to see him three times live, including not long before he died and it was always mind-blowing experience. And let's not Overlook his band double trouble. Do you know how hard it is to hold down such a sparse minimal exposed vulnerable Rhythm section, meaning bass and drums, when somebody just goes off the chain like that question mark it is very difficult, but what I love about it is they were good friends and buddies not just performing together. So they had that chemistry.

    This clip changed my life about 10 years ago. I stopped listening to rap, and delved into jazz and blues, and bought my first guitar! May I suggest John Coltrane, miles Davis, Albert Collins, buddy Guy, tab Benoit, Samantha Fish, Gary Moore, Gary Clark Jr, ZZ top, led zeppelin! Enjoy!

    Bro I have seen so many people react to this video, but your reaction was the best I've ever seen. Because you didn't stop it a hundred times. You just seem to be mind blown by the musicianship. As well as you should be. Stevie was otherworldly. It's a shame we never got to see where he would have arrived. I loved watching you be amazed. Peace to you my friend

    SRV Double Trouble. He's just foolin' around in this one. Supernatural! Welcome to the fan club! Loved your reaction. Boomer generation had all the best music. Great to watch a new generation, get a load of Stevie Ray.

    maybe there was someone before recordings or who never got recorded who was better but I sincerely doubt it. That’s your goat right there. Jimi threatens the crown but Stevie’s improv just can’t be topped. Lucky me both were in my lifetime!

    I loved how you were loving it when Stevie gets all quiet with his number 1, and instead of talking about his sweat, we could just watch you REALLY see and hear what he was doing. I really loved your reaction, you’ve got what it takes. The question is, do you want to come on the journey? ❤
