Wild New Forest Vlog: Sewage discharges into New Forest rivers

  • Join Russell Wynn of Wild New Forest as he investigates the issue of sewage discharges into New Forest rivers, including footage of a live discharge event into the upper Beaulieu River during Storm Christoph, chemical sampling showing very high nutrient pollution levels in the discharged material, and brief discussion of some of the potential downstream impacts. Although these emergency discharge events (called combined sewer overflows) are licensed, there are concerns that they are increasing in frequency and that they may be negatively impacting New Forest habitats and species. Further information can also be found in this Wild New Forest blog post: www.wildnewforest.co.uk/post/...

    Other countries have separate collectors for rainwater and wastewater.

    They should build large CSO lakes to catch the overflow and then air rate the waste water so it is full of oxygen to allow algae to grow. The algae should then consume all of the nitrates and any other nutrients in the water to clean it. Afterwards once it has setteled release the cleaner waste water free from solids into the river systems. It may not be the cleanest water but it should be cleaner than it was in its raw form.

      why is it a problem? the people voted to get rid of all EU regs and Tories keep delivering.
      Let's wait when the rest will go - Mogg can't wait to implement it. The problem will be then.

    There should never be raw sewage discharged anywhere When I was in a school science class back in the early 70's, we did a lesson on water and sewage and we were told how the sewage is filtered over and over again until in the end it was almost clean before being discharged anywhere. I thought all water companies would be doing this and I'm shocked to keep hearing that this doesn't happen.

    I have noticed a sewage smell regularly near the bridge over the Lymington for over 1 year or more very foul smell. I keep meaning to contact the EA. Is there a sewer outfall there. Strong smell when you walk fast. I never remember smelling this many years back. Has anyone noticed.?

    • @wildnewforest1346
      @wildnewforest1346  Před 3 lety

      There are regular discharges of untreated sewage effluent from the wastewater treatment works operated by Southern Water at Brockenhurst during/after rainfall (called combined sewer overflows), and lots of smaller-scale discharges from private residences in the lower reaches. Worth reporting to the EA anyway and make sure they agree to call you back with a response once they have investigated!

    Horrible that this is allowed. In Australia all sewage must be properly treated thru a series of treatment ponds and also chemical treatment before it is ready to be discharged into the sea. Raw sewage is not allowed to be dumped in this way. This is awful.

  • @jordantheallroundangler85

    Absolutely disgusting! As a fisherman i find this highly disturbing! Wading through poo isn't nice when trout fishing!

    I was visiting Cornwall recently as a ger,man tourist. Unbelievable to discharge sewage nowadays. Hopefully the weather was bad so I don't had to swim. It is also not nice to imagine eating fish and chips from nearby fish. You can solve it if you want. We did it.
