      hahaha was thinking the same thing! Here the issue is they have to treat storm-water and waste water at the same facility. It would be an impossible task due to infrastructure layout.

    That's what happens when public services like water are being privatised. Decades ago, it was done with the promise of investing in making the system working in today's world AND to make water cheaper "in due time". Decades later, there was barely any investment at all, instead over 60 billion pounds were paid out to the "investors" and water got constantly more expensive. Public goods need to stay in public ownership.

    The Tories voted recently to approve water companies regular dumping of raw sewage into rivers and our seas for the next 15 - 50 years, these are NOT water companies they are enterprises to make profits for overseas owners, pay massive salaries to directors & dividends to shareholders under the guise of treatment & supply of safe water. The evidence is plain to see, when they need capital for infrastructure maintenance they borrow the money & the debt helps with their tax evasion. Enough is enough, all water companies should be taken back into public ownership - not bought back because they have fleeced us enough already, take back these companies for their environmental outrages!. I wish there were public spirited individuals out there who would locate these overflow pipes & seal them tight, then watch & laugh as everything backs up.

    What were the promises around public services privatisation?
    Better services, more efficiency, cheaper...
    The usual con, the usual lie, as we discover today that greedy shareholders made cuts around used water treatments and dropped sewage directly in rivers and sea.
    The head news was: Unprecedented apologies about the VOLONTARY pollution made for pure profit. Sorry guys; we keep our jobs, we keep our bonuses, we are just sorry, and by the way the build of the infrastructures needed will be reported on YOUR bill... let them pay, cease the profit and finance the infrastructures with their profit they can’t pay? JAIL!!! JAIL or JAIL!
    Those people should be in court, the shareholders’ dividends ceased, those people should be in jail and the companies nationalized again to become again with better services, more efficient, cheaper... they lied, they polluted for years, and now they show us the finger.
    Where were the controls from the state? Did they turn a blind eye on it? Did they knew?
    Purely disgusting.

    This country seriously needs to take a darn good hard look at itself on every level. It will be painful and disturbing , but necessary. How on Earth have we allowed ourselves to get into this mess? Why did we sit back and trust our Government ( mainly the Tories , it also New Labour ) to look after our waterways and beaches , and invest properly in our future? This National sickness has plagued us for decades and decades , and it’s not just water. We all know it , we are falling behind our neighbours and starting to look like a joke of a country. The problem is that we are fighting amongst ourselves all the time instead of working together for our collective future. These rivers run through Tory constituencies and Labour constituencies alike. Certain services and utilities like water , roads , railways , education , health should NOT be subjected to party politics and bickering. Our antiquated and pathetic electoral system just pours salt onto this division. It encourages division and short term electioneering. No single party on its own seems to be able to get a grip on any of it.

    As a hydraulic civil engineer, this is a result of our drainage systems experiencing hydraulic overload resulting in a SSO and a CSO
    The treatment plants have a set max input which in combined systems, hydraulic designers must Incorporate an appurtenance that has an interceptor with a calculated diameter and grade to permit the max input quantity and a weir above out to a line leading to the outfall location, watercourses, lakes, culverts, other stormwater drains, the sea, an occurrence known as a CSO happens.
    the situation is exacerbated due to the fact that depending on the topology, the sewer systems encounter the phreatic table (groundwater, springs) which result in infiltration into the lines through the spigots, which can not only assist in hydraulically overcoming combined sewers, but also dedicated sanitary sewers occurring in an SSO! an SSO is by far much more horrible to the public than CSOs as SSOs dont have dedicated relief appurtenances!.

      @ecaeas4439 Před 2 lety

      Interesting. I am going to be doing some of my own research on this issue, but from what I've heard thus far, the monumental occurrence of leaks across the system exacerbates the problem of sewage getting into the rivers and watercourses. Is it correct that sewage makes into the rivers by mixing with water from the leaking pipes, and the process of diluting the sewage allows it easily infiltrate into rivers?
      What actually needs to change about our system? It might not be something you can answer, but I'd be interested to get your response. Is it right that we need to move away from combined sewers, to separate systems for rain / storm water as some people have suggested? Is that even possible or economical in the time frame of trying to address the issue immediately?

      It's because most of Britain was built before the 1940s, and the drainage for roads is also the drainage for sewers. These are mixed together. To fix it, you essentially have to treat all rainwater as sewage, or build separate systems for road drainage and household sewage.
