    Doing the math makes it so much easier to understand our usage verses the time it takes to finish products. Thanks for doing this despite how awkward it must feel to have 130+ years worth of eyeshadows. Also if you end up decluttering/curating your collection I’d love to see an update.

    • @RebeccaMorgan
      @RebeccaMorgan  Před rokem +16

      I’m thinking I’d like to share the updated numbers again in the future, it would be good to check in after this year to see if my empties averages and inventory counts change! It most definitely feels awkward sharing how much I have but at the same time, I think it can be eye opening for others too when they look at their own collections as well 🥰

    @lainelee3632 Před rokem +8

    Yes this is how I evaluate how much makeup i need and then realise i only really need one per category for each area. I don't even have a blush now because I've never finished a blush or lipstick so I now only own one or two lipsticks, and use that as blush. I've saved so much money just by being aware and buying accordingly.

  • @saloniaa
    @saloniaa Před rokem +14

    There was an excel sheet before that was going around to calculate how much makeup we have. When I calculated mine I had 125 years of highlighter and 80 years of blush. I was so shocked I sat in my chair and cried how did it get so out of hand. I honestly think it's higher than these numbers because I don't wear makeup everyday, I wear it once a month. And I do not want to live that long either, its crazy what social media did to my buying habits :(

    • @RebeccaMorgan
      @RebeccaMorgan  Před rokem +5

      Yeah it is pretty unfortunate to think about how normalized large makeup stashes are because of social media. I understand how you are feeling, it can be overwhelming! What’s done is done. But we can choose the way we want to consume moving forward, and those kinds of statistics can really change your perspective and habits 🥰 I really hope you are feeling more content with your collection now

    It would be interesting if you went through every category and showed your newest and oldest products and on average, how "old" that category is. The thought of a blush palette that has been with me for 5+ years and thinking of where I was in my life 5+ years ago is definitely a reality check! Definitely makes me reconsider whenever I feel like buying anything new.

Even though I have been on a low buy/no buy for a couple of years my collection could last a couple of lifetimes if they did not go bad. Assuming i could finish an eyeshadow a year, and say, I was focusing on 4 shadows a year as a quad, it would take me roughly 200 years of wearing eyeshadow to finish all of mine 😂 and let’s not discuss blush. I will be buried with mine.
    Edit: i went and counted the blushes. Let me preface this by saying the one blush i DID manage to finish in my LIFE took me 2.5 years…. My drawers are currently holding a STAGGERING 95 pans of blush. I need to go crawl under a rock in shame. Omg.

    I probably have 200+ years of eyeshadow because I almost never finish any. This is why I just go for reaching $1 per use on my stuff, cause I’ll never finish things like eyeshadow but I can certainly use a $50 palette 50 times. And I can certainly use a Charlotte Tilbury $34 lipstick 34x. If I finish things that way, then great, and if not, then I got to a reasonable expectation of my usage without getting obsessed with finishing things. I think it’s hard not to amass much since makeup brands aren’t willing to sell samplers of their color cosmetics or tiny sizes, since those aren’t worth the customer acquisition cost. By the time you’ve made the decision to buy from them, they’d rather you spend $18 on the full size rather than the $6 1/3 of it you’ll actually use.

    • @exomake_mehorololo
      @exomake_mehorololo Před rokem +3

      I so agree on mini sizes!! I would happily buy much smaller product sizes. Also majority of make up I own I couldn't test in stores or swatch either as I live in a small town and I like indie. Really increases your chance to buy items you don't love

    If makeup didn’t expire, I would be set on eyeshadow and blush for the rest of my life. If I focused on one palette only, I could use up one palette per year. I don’t do that and I bounce around between palettes and shades. I don’t finish anything and I am ok with that process.

      @@RebeccaJadee I am focusing on my ND Glam palette this year. I have a tendency to hyper focus on one palette and neglect the rest. Well, let’s see how I am doing. I have used the ND Glam 17 times. The next two palettes have been used a whopping 5 times a piece. Idk, I sometimes play with my Glam palette at night before I shower. It gets used more than the others by default. I should start using another palette from time to time.

    I just saw a tip of scraping a bit of eyeshadow beforehand. I'm going to try that as some shadows as some get harder to get onto the brush or are pressed harder to begin with.
    Should be easy to finish up some neutrals this way.
    Also I came across the tip to mix certain colors if you would not use it on its own. She mentioned using orange and blue toghether for instance
    I also like to use a darker shadow that I find too dark with a shimmer on top to make it more wearable works for me.
    I guess experiment more with combinations as it is easy to grab for the same colours.

    I remember vividly how long it takes to get rid of an eye infection.
    So my makeup, especially eye products, lasts exactly for one or two years.

    Knowing that I'll throw away the product in one or two years is a stark reminder for me to not buy too much.

I’ve been on a no buy since but it’s really hard because I’m down to a lot of the same lip colors just in different formats. I’m down to just reds, silver glosses, bright pinks, and one purple. I will re-calculate but I’m down to 2 years worth of lippies! 🎉
    I can’t even calculate my eyeshadow collection because I’ve never finished a single eyeshadow but I have hope that this year I will finish one. Trying to look at it as even tho I bring in new shadows each year (not many, like a palette or 2) at least I move out a quad 😅.....rather than thinking I have half a century of usage left. I learned it's so much easier for me to finish up shadows across different palettes and even single shadows rather than trying to pan a whole quad. I stopped buying shimmery nail polish tho, so by using your trick I wonder how my eyeshadow usage rates will change.

    Thank you for sharing this, this puts everything into perspective for me and will help me in my low buy year. My question to you is what will you do with your makeup that you do not like as much? For example, are you still going to randomly select eyeshadow colours and push yourself to pan them while knowing that the ones that you love most are just getting older and will most likely expire? Personally I did a big declutter some time ago and now I keep all my favourite individual eyeshadows in one magnetic pallete and I have a second magnetic pallete where I keep some other ones that I'm neither loving or hating but maybe I would like to use up in the future. I might reduce their number even more in order to actually give myself the chance to use most of them up because I would still want to buy new stuff in the future, especially if it is something innovative.

      I know the feeling of having invested so much time searching for the right shades and spending the money to buy them with so much excitement. Then it sits there waiting to be loved on. I had to do a major declutter when I developed allergies. I mean even stuff in my pantry like food coloring and flavorings of extracts and perfumes and lotions had to get tossed, not just makeup. Someone had mentioned their house had mold but they didn’t discover it because it was inside of their closet where they put a cabinet. Apparently her makeup was in the cabinet and it had molded but it didn’t “look” like it did. She was having all kinds of reactions and when she discovered the mold everything in her closet got tossed. And she had been feeling ill for at least 3 years before she discovered it.

      If there are some you can't bear to part with, you could try getting a spoolie and brushing off some of your favorite highlighters into some lotion or sunscreen for a shimmery body product, which could be gorgeous for the summertime. I sometimes get insecure about my legs in the summer but I started adding in crushed old shimmery eyeshadows/highlighters and waterproof skin tints and it's been a game changer for going out for me. I am also acne prone and it's hard to part with beautiful makeup when it doesn't help me feel like my face is beautiful. And I'm obsessed with highlighting my shoulders and collarbones because...they look good and deserve the spotlight lol. Best wishes to you in your skin journey

    I love creating spreadsheets and stats for my hobbies, but I don't have enough stats on how many products I use up, mainly because I go through products rather slowly. I know that if I use an eyeshadow consistently it'll take me 4 times as long to finish it as it took for me to hit pan on it for the first time. If I use this as a metric and the eyeshadow I took the longest to hit pan on (69 months) it'll take me 17 more years to finish it. I still have fairly old eyeshadow I haven't hit pan on yet tho'. Based on my eyeshadow use-up stats finish 0.8 eyeshadows per year and with 91 shadows that translates to 109 years worth of eyeshadow.
    I've finished 0.88 lip products per year, therefore it would take 20.5 years to finish my 18 lip products (I'm pretty close to finishing some tho')
    I purchased my first and only bronzer and blush (since I started doing makeup inventories) in 2020 and I think I'll finish both this year. I'll stick to one in each category. If I want a different cheek color I use my eyeshadows.
    The only coverage product I own is a concealer and it lasted me more than 3 years, but I think I might finish it this year.

    I have a better chance of winning the lottery then ever using up my makeup. I have at minimum 100 years with. My eyeshadow collection is infinite.

    I feel like the goal should be to have no more than a 2 year supply of any type of product since I'm pretty sure any makeup product would technically be expired after 2 years

    you have to look at the gramms not the item numbers

      Totally, but I was doing this just for fun based on items 😊

    The eyeshadow number is obviously way off. You focus more on hitting pan in your projects. If you took that focus off hitting pan and placed it more on finishing pans, that number would be way higher and years would be down significantly. All those pans, you could knock a bunch of those out this year if that was your M.O.
    For instance, if you increased that number to just four, i.e., finishing less than two more eyeshadows per year by perhaps making that a goal rather than just hit pan, the number of years would drop to 76. Still significant, but your goals and projects that you follow on your channel skew that number, and with how many pans you hit in a year, I think you could do more than four per year if you didn't create so many fun looks that would take away from your focus!

      Every “estimate” in this video is based on actual averages, not based on potential future trend changes in my makeup empties. Hope that make sense to you! It was all in good fun, my consumption will change I’m sure, some things will go bad, I may change the way I focus on products. But that’s not really what this video was about 😊

      @@RebeccaMorgan it was clear the whole time what your approach was in the video! I'm just pointing out how needed the quotes around "estimate" are, because that's clearly not accurate in the case of eyeshadow, and given you made more realistic assertions noting your usage patterns as well as how full or empty products were in so many other categories and didn't mention this one, I thought it would be a good conversation point. Hope that makes sense!

      @@sweater0115 maybe one day I’ll change my eyeshadow usage habits but I love rotating through them and hitting pan on them more than trying to finish them up currently 😊

      @@RebeccaMorgan yeah, I pointed that out in my first comment. I love both types of content! I love seeing people with bigger collections get their numbers down, then I love seeing people like yourself with much more reasonable numbers actually get use out of your stuff by rotating. But that is why I wanted to bring up this point. That's how you use your shadows. With the other categories, you addressed things like level of usage and how your usage style changed. With the shadows you didn't touch on it and I think, because it's such a big number at 130+ years, that is where a conversation like that would have been really interesting! Especially because your shadow looks are so creative and inspired, colourful or neutral, it really plays into your usage and that, maybe that 2.25 number is completely out if whack given the spread of your use, but you know your collection is really getting loved even though that hard value seems so unimpressive. Like, in this case there is so much more to it.
