Sandusky Ohio here. Been having some great laughs and learning some great info watching your vids. Currently in the market for my first one. Can't wait to finally get behind the wheel.
Don't know much about Elka shocks but i love having the adjustability of high/low comp and rebound. Ive been messing around with the suspension setup on my X3. With some tweaking I got it dialed in and I love it even more than stock. Never could do much with the springy suspension of my old XP1K. Love the vids, keep them coming.
excellent! I was worried about the cost of having to replace these shocks. I'll be taking this route when the time comes, and referencing this video - Thanks!
Yup from Canada , Born and raised Northern Ontario. I got a stage 4 Elkas kit and big shock for the rear of my back country didn't come with the bumpstops so if the suspension compresses, everything goes off to the side because of path of least resistance.
Loving the vids! very entertaining lol. Watching from Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. Just purchased an Arctic Cat Wildcat Sport Limited. Loving the Elka stage 5's!
To get the seal head down you would have brought the nitrogen down to about 10 psi or so.. Then filled the nitrogen to the recommended psi after the shock was together. If you checked the nitrogen after the rebuild the way you guys did it I bet you it was really low. Bladder expands when there is an oil leak or when you take it apart like you guys did. Love your videos.. But I wanted other people to know that you should always remove nitrogen and add nitrogen when rebuilding a shock if you want the shock to perform like it did new. Nitrogen puts pressure against the oil.
I know im asking randomly but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an instagram account? I stupidly forgot the account password. I love any assistance you can offer me!
@Carl Leon thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and Im in the hacking process now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
SXSBlog.com awesome guys! Thank you for the info, I've been needing a rebuild all summer! Mine feels and looks like it leaked all the oil out of at least 2 and the other 2 just started leaking a few weeks ago! I'll be ordering the parts this week! I planned on riding it out tell winter time to send them in to get rebuilt cause I couldn't find seal anywhere!
I'm from Montreal Québec Canada, actually had Helka stage 5 on my maverick XXC had them rebuilt in there shop in Boucherville took 3 days. Elka tech that did mine said they should serviced every year.
I skipped hygear once I saw their shipping prices 😂. I ordered new seal heads directly from elka. Correct me if I’m wrong but shouldn’t the nitrogen be bled out completely before doing anything? Also anyone know how much oil is supposed to go back in and what the best method of bleeding the air out is? I can easily fill it to 175 psi regulated nitrogen after (I work at a shop where 175 psi nitrogen is used constantly for air suspension)
You guys should come to Canada, Rocky Mountain house Alberta. My videos don't do it justice, I haven't had a lot of time this summer to post more. I'll try to get something on here that shows the variety of riding better.
Honestly we dont know. I think for 99% of riding situations most new age high performance shocks are going to rock! I think the best thing about having 3 way adjustable (high/low speed compression dampening and rebound dampening adjustment) is that you can FINE tune the shocks for very certain situations.
The easy way to get those bushings out is to put a tap in the hole so you can screw a bolt in yhe hole, tap on the bolt with a punch in turn taking out the bushing.
Hey @SXSBlog.com, Long time fan, first time caller. I've seen this video before, but NOW I'm looking at shocks. What'd you think of the Elka Stage 5? Worth the money? I've had the Fox Evol 3 and RC2. They were ok, but I'm looking at Elka for a new project. Worth the price difference? Were they PLUSH like Jesus in a pair of Air Force Ones walking on a Tempur Pedic? Thanks! Peter
So the seal kit you get from Hygear are a complete ripoff. After shipping, it's about $50 just for the seals. You will not save any money doing this yourself. Disassemble the shock, clean it, drain the oil, put it in a box, and send to the factory for service. Not to take anything away from the video which is very informative and entertaining, but replacing these seals is difficult and frustrating.
Love going back to these old school videos! Beers and HP!

Oil disposal? Here in Canada, we dispose it right over a 10ft tire and pallet fire.

The tool for changing discs on my Craftsman Grinder worked perfectly for the "special" elka tool.
