Wow, it's eye-opening to see her realizing how much freedom she has now and questioning if she should have made this change years ago. I wonder if these recurring themes in stories are reflective of a broader cultural norm in Japan, where women endure silently in marriages and shoulder all household responsibilities. Is it really expected that wives handle all the housework alone while husbands never pitch in?

Maybe the wives should go get a job that earns as much and requires some heavy labor. Almost every job I've had required me to be outside(I live in. Phoenix AZ) all day and hours could last up to 16 per day(not often) without notice. I'll stay home get bored and go cheat.

These women are treated like slaves, no respect no remorse, until money is involved. such despicable people.
As most of these people are out doing what they want when they want, while the women's lives are literally taken by the selfishness of these people, you're not living your best lives, until you have gone through the hardships your enduring, life is too short for these outcomes, as soon as everything starts going south, that's when it's time to leave, not 20yrs later.

Really! She is now figuring out how much freer she is and wondering if she should have this years ago? I don’t know if all these writers get together to write about the same things or if it is the Japanese culture to suffer in their marriage and keep their mouths shut. Apparently it is the wife who should do all of the housework - properly! Husbands never help? I am not Japanese as you can tell but is this their culture in these stories and are MIL’s so bad and controlling?

It is getting so old in these stories how the In-Laws are always portrayed in being so evil, there is just as many in-laws that are kind, loving and even compassionate, mine for example treat me like I am their own child. Being someone that was an orphan and never knew what a family was an only seeing other families from the outside in. Furthermore, many husbands and wives are loving to one another. I just want once to see a story where such love and kindness are prevalent.

These are not designed to show the good ones, 99% of them at least it seems. Lately however I have happened on some stories that are uplifting & positive with good endings. However, I for one, find in reading story after story of the abuse & demeaning treatment it is helping me to work through my own 24 years of abuse by my ex. And I'm not Asian but I am a Baby Boomer with a whole heirarchical structure of its own where the man was reverred & the woman was secondary; raised as a child in an abusive family by parents who devalued me & crushed my spirit early on then I had the older sister who was madly loved & generally perfect, and I in stark contrast was not, I entered into my marriage already devaluing myself etc. I was a prime candidate for being further abused.
Listening to these stories it really brings home to me the difficulty I had in both my family of origin & by my husband & some of his older siblings. I've been in therapy on & off my whole adult life but it has only been in the last couple of years have I received significant help by Psychiatry & top notch psychotherapy & general counseling plus a medication regimen. Hang in there everyone.

Aawwww you don't understand the silent grip of a toxic relationship. An Abuser NEEDS an Abusee. Hurting their partner is their nectar. Abuse is a mind game and the abuser perfects their skill at destroying a persons self worth, their power, their belief in themselves their belief they even deserve better treatment .... the abusee feeling they need to work harder, meet the abusers stated expectations & needs if only they could measure up. In striving to show the abuser their worthiness, at last, & that the abusee deserves to receive from the abuser what the abusee readily gives to others the abused will prove to the abuser they do indeed deserve to be treated as if they have worth, & to be loved. It is about the abusee believing if they could just earn their abusers approval & love....all the things the person in a healthy relationship would just receive simply because their very being merited not being abused. The abusee, doctrinated daily to believe they are defective, lacking, & not good enough, the abusee strives to earn the abusers positive treatment, to be deemed worthy. Truly it is a sick mess, one the abusee, over time, has begun to believe in ... if she/he would just eliminate within themselves the negative elements they possess that makes them undeserving of love & simple kindnesses: appreciation, approval, the abusee works hard to improve themselves so life will be good, they will be accepted, loved & valued. No. It doesn't happen. The cycle of abuse is designed by the abuser for the abusee to only failure.
It is just sick AND cruel.
