Democrats don't want anyone watching the polls.
At counts after voting has finished, candidates rightly have scrutineers watching those counting to ensure they are doing so correctly, and questioning ambiguous ballots. That is standard practice throughout the "free world". In most countries, however, nobody is allowed in the voting centre during voting hours, other than poll workers, voters, and law enforcent if needed. This is to avoid the type of voter intimidation common in authoritarian regimes.
As a former Deputy Returning Officer in Ontario, this was pretty much the case. They never gave me trouble as I counted, and didn't even object when I determined that a ballot was spoiled (which was also pretty rare).

Look, I'm all for folks becoming poll watchers- either dem or repub. This is because when one becomes a poll watcher one actually has to know what the voting laws are and how the process works- with paper trails and security features and all the rest. I believe we haven't been hearing so much about horrible elections since 2020 is because so many became involved and saw for themselves how secure our elections really are.
I've enjoyed Ari's analyses for years, a great talent.
Can't wait to read his latest book.
