    My husband and I visited Japan for the first time in March/April. It was our first time there and we absolutely loved it. The thing we didn’t like/hated was the crowd (made 100 times worse by all the tourists..) and seeing the bad behaviours displayed by some tourists. We obviously knew it was going to be crowded especially in overpopulated cities like Tokyo and the touristy places BUT coming from a small country like NZ, the density of the crowds especially in places like Takeshita Street and Sannenzaka (to name a few) still gave me huge cultural shocks.
    We did tons of research before our trip and looked up on all the ‘what not to dos’ in Japan because we didn’t want to be “those tourists” but most importantly, it’s just a way to show that as a ‘guest/visitor’, we respect their country and the people living there to make sure we are not doing anything to cause disturbance and inconvenience to others.
    When we were there, we saw tourists from everywhere (US, Russia, Spanish speaking countries, Korea, China/Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines). Some of the behaviours that made me roll my eyes were people eating and drinking while walking in the busy markets, littering, eating and drinking in areas near temples where there are clear marked signs saying no eating or drinking, small groups of people walking from the opposite direction taking up the whole path so I had to walk on the grass, etc… and before people start assuming ‘oh they must be all Chinese’, well they were not

    I live in Japan, have for awhile. I think there are a lot of things overlooked here but I'm not gonna get into them all. I will say, in my experience and a lot of people I speak to, the main problem tends to come from Americans.
    While it's true that there are some negative biases towards Chinese people that are not historically related, they are rarely examples of entitlement and more just issues of cultural difference.
    With that said, the area I work in has seen a rapid increase of tourists skipping out on their bills. Every time it has been a foreigner, and the majority of them have been American. Fights. Women being harassed. Just shitty behavior, but most locals do not tend to generalize customers despite recent incidents.
    There has also been an uptick of Westerners in general who will come here and find a way to complain about immigration in their own country (ironically). There really is that imaginary Japan they've created in their head as some kind of heavenly ethnostate, but that's another issue.
    I believe Japan has done and does always try to, at the best of their ability, accommodate tourists (signs in multiple languages, for example) but outside of cultural norms, business owners like to be well-prepared. If they feel that they cannot provide the best service, then it becomes a problem to them.
    By no means are things perfect, but I think a lot of the outrage towards Japan stems from a lot of entitlement and condescension.

    His Japanese accent might sound a bit like a Chinese accent, but it's different from a Chinese accent. It's a type of accent where you can only tell that it's some sort of accent, and it doesn't sound like a Japanese accent. English with a strong Japanese accent has pitch accent, lacks liaison, and features consonant-vowel pairing. Ken Shimura's portrayal of an English teacher is perfect as an example of English spoken with a Japanese accent. Personally, I think this podcast is attractive enough without any accent, so maybe he doesn't need to do it.

My first trip, I mainly only saw some Americans, Australians, and Filipinos. Not that many people. Now everyone is there and it feels even more congested than it already was in the big tourist cities like Tokyo and Kyoto. I feel like in the past 5ish years, the world became more aware of and fascinated by Japanese culture. Anime became mainstream and people started to discover the amazing food and rich history through CZcams, TikTok, etc. Once Japan opened back up for tourism after the pandemic, the flood gates opened and everyone is rushing to experience everything they’ve seen online. Alot of the people causing problems are the Chinese tourists, Also the Europeans and Other Western tourists are causing problems. I rode in a ropeway in Kobe and a group of Chinese tourists were so loud, the Japanese were appalled at them, and treated me along with the 2 other white women on the ropeway very well, the appreciated how quiet we are.
    I saw a group of Nepalese tourists in Yoshinogari Park and they were pretty well behaved.
    The Kick Streamers and Bad CZcamsrs are really a menace there like Fidias and Johnny somali.

    Come on their systems are asinine, I literally walked across Kyushu a few months back. Travelling is extremely difficult with lots of unintuitive bus and train ticketing systems. Their booking of guest houses and hotels is terrible. Many small restaurants in the countryside will not serve you because they are intimidated about trying to serve non Japanese speakers. Smooth some stuff out for tourists and they will become less bothersome.

      Fueling it in what way? Even at it's height pre-pandemic, tourism revenue accounted for less than 1% of the nation's GDP. Compare that with 3% for the US/Korea and 11% for China.

    • @rainzerdesu
      @rainzerdesu Před 24 dny +1

      @@monchichipower6334 Cause you're failing to understand the statement. Japan's highest tourism revenue was before pandemic at less than 1% of their GDP. US, Korea, China has exponentially more during and post pandemic. Like Korea during the pandemic had 2.7% GDP from tourism which is more than Japan had before the pandemic. And tourism revenue contributing to GDP is more than having tourists. It's having people working in the industry like hotels and restaurants. So the idea of lack of travel during the pandemic is a meaningless statement.
