When I was about 12 or 13 (1965 or 66), I was looking through an old school book that belonged to my stepmother, and there was Dick York, un-named, modeling as a student sitting at a school desk. It was probably a section of the book that talked about studying. I was, at the time, a big fan of "Bewitched," and it intrigued me to run across a photo of him as a teen model.
It’s so sad that people have no heart when it comes to helping someone they’ve know for that many years. Time will tell on those that are mean spirited. The old saying is so true “what goes around comes around”. They will have to face the man upstairs one day.😔
Unfortunately, I don’t believe in that. Wish I could. All I ever observe in my life are bad people getting ahead and good people having bad things happen to them.
Dick York was a very sweet and intelligent man , it’s a dam shame he was kicked to the curb like that😢. I had no idea he was so ill . 🙏Rip 🙏 from one of your fans.😞
I never could understand why the people he worked with on the show Bewitched couldn't have helped him, it's obvious they all had money someone could have picked up and help that man I thought they were his friend
I knew about his crippling back issues and emphysema. I didn't know he died so destitute. That's horrible. He was a great actor. I think it's ironic that Dick Sargent had been the creators' first choice for Darrin but wasn't available at the time, so they hired Dick York. Then when he left they got Dick Sargent to replace him. RIP💔🖤 Bewitched was one of the best shows of all time!
I watched when I grew up i the Darrin after replacing with did not fit well it looked like he was annoyed Dick York did not look like that did you feel that too
@@MFARAJR1018 Yeah sometimes. Dick Sargent's Darrin did seem to be more sarcastic and cynical than Dick York's. But that's the writers doing the dialogue, not the actors, so maybe it was on purpose? Darrin had been dealing with Endora, Maurice, etc so long, you can see why he'd be sick of them, lol.
Only one Darrin for me that Dick York. Why he wasn't helped by those who knew him is sad. Iam 74 years old and still watch bewitched on dvd. Growing up in the Golden age of TV and watching all the programs in black and white was fun. Another time a sweet wholesome time. A time that has long ago vanished and very missed.
Dick was ousted after the fifth season at the behest of Elizabeth Montgomery, whom Beyond the show's set, York was said to be in love with, which made her uncomfortable because she was married to the show's producer, William Asher. They used his condition as an excuse to fire him. Montgomery also wanted to quit the show after the fifth season. However, the producers raised her pay due to the show's popularity, and she stayed on for three more seasons. To me Dick York has always been the original and only Darrin Stevens.
That's not true, despite what third-season-only producer William Froug believed in that doctored video from "Dan Whit's" channel (which seems to have a weird anti-York bent). Montgomery's own husband William Asher fought to keep York on the show up until his collapse in season 5. York's health problems really were the reason for his departure, not Montgomery.
I did not known that York did so much acting before Bewitch. What happened to he's family and friends or Elizabeth Montgomery? Dick Sargent never really took he's place in my mind. He was number one as Darin in Bewitch. RIP You was loved. ❤
Tim I'm not sure who's doing your research for you, but you might consider firing them. York was neither "broke" nor "homeless " at the time of his death. After much appreciated donations from his fans, and a few organizations, York and his wife Joan managed quite well. York's finances improved after his memoir The Seesaw Girl and Me was published, and sold quite well, giving the bedridden York enough money to live the rest of his life comfortably. Tim, do us all a favor, stop with the antics and show-boating, and give us what this channel is all about, FACTS verse.

Watched this show in Australia as a child absolutely loved viewing every night before dinner ,saddened to see how life for him turned out in his later years and so typical how Hollywood on the one hand make you a star and then disguard you at the drop of a hat when the going gets tough (shame ) T L
Wow. That is so sad. I had no idea. And there are a lot of parallels between his life and my own. When I was in my late 20s I had an accident that wrecked my back causing the same thing. Chronic pain, chronic unemployment and addiction . I was also an actor (though nowhere near as successful as him) and lost my SAG insurance because I couldn’t work. Shannon Dougherty is going through the same thing right now.
He was great actor! I also remember him with a Thriller show, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and Twilight Zone. So sad his life was marred with addiction, not only opioids but smoked like three packs of cigarettes a day that damaged his lungs. He smoked like a chimney on the set of Bewitched. Medical bills will eat up your savings real fast including (especially these days) the cost of medical insurance.
I remember watching Bewitched as an 80s kid, Dick York was zany but funny as heck. I recall reading an interview he gave near the end when he was asked if he had any advice to us youngsters. He says, "reach for the light....a Bud light!" RIP Mr York
I remember reading that he actually owned an apartment building in Michigan where he lived in one of units himself. However, he would refuse to evict people who could not afford to pay the rent. Ultimately, his generosity got him into trouble to where the building was foreclosed on and he was then evicted by the new owners.
@@harperstacey9604 kindness or stupidity? Renting apartments is a business and you'd better have the knowledge, ability readiness to do evictions or you will lose the business.
So sad for such an icon of the sitcoms. I am thankful some cable stations still play all the old sitcoms like Bewitched. I can watch and laugh and be reminded of times when the show was important to me as I was growing up. Is it me or does Dick York remind anyone of Jim Carrey? Around Dick's eyes and head really reminds me of Jim Carrey
I loved "Bewitched"! One of my favorite shows. I forgotten about the fact that he passed away over 30 years ago! I just never knew "how" he passed away. It's unfortunate that he suffered. I liked his upbeat vibe on the show! Everyone on that show delivered 👍! Rip Dick York🙏!
I loved Dick York as Darrin, his facial expressions were hilarious! So sorry his back issues were so awful for him, he deserved a better end of life. RIP Dick aka Darrin.🥺💕
I don't like it when someone who needs pain medication gets referred to as an addict. They might be dependent on a drug but if they are in that much pain they need to be dependent on the drug. Our society is too judgmental.
I met him in Michigan when he was sick. He lived in Rockford Michigan but he lived in a house at the time, not an apartment building. I remember he was on oxygen and was a real funny guy, very foul mouthed and loved to smoke weed. He didn’t seem to be broke but he was in poor physical condition probably leading to think he was broke.
@@muziklvr7776 it was around 1990 or 1991. I was just in high school and my friend’s mother was a police officer and she befriended Dick through a safety check I believe. Then one day my friend asked if I wanted to meet him and I didn’t believe that he knew him.
Umm, (Sir/Ma'am) just 1 more thing 🤔. I mean she was a very beautiful lady, and she played his husband..🤷♂️ I fell in love with her and I wasn't even an actor..🤷♂️😆
Money does funny things to people. Apparently, they didn't value their friendship as much as they did their money. My father taught me when I was a little kid. Son, never measure wealth with money. Wisest man I ever knew...
Yes, I remember when he left the show Mama told me he had severe back pain and couldn’t work anymore. I was astonished years later when Elizabeth Montgomery died three years after him, at age 62. He’d been in bad health for years yet lived a longer life than she did. - It does sound like his wife stuck with him and he did have a family so he did have that after the fame and money were gone. So, in some ways he was a lucky man.
He did not deserve what happened to him at the very end. Just shows you how hollywood uses people, and then tosses them aside lke a rag doll. He was a very good actor and did some serious roles in movies and tv shows. RIP Darren.
Dick York also guest starred in Father Knows Best! I loved that episode!! My favorite was when he was on Bewitched. He made the perfect Darrin Stephens. I'm so sad about his health decline and his passing. You'll always be loved and missed. RIP Dick York ❤🙏🏻😢
A very sad end to anybody's life😢 In truth i never thought that Dick Sargeant caught the real Darren, but thats just my take on the actor. The world of Hollywood had & indeed still has many fakes and uses of its lifestyle, to make believe how great it is.But to my mind the true mark of a good honest man is how he faces his own life as it draws to its end.We can ask Why Me? Or as Dick York did, show the better way of using the time he'd been given to help others And while we can still see a man at his craft doing a great job of making us laugh 😂 or cry😢 or sometimes just 😊

My understanding from watching this is that he was Not homeless, he just did Not have a home of his own. And that he got royalties from Bewitched. I am greatful that God looks on the heart and is merciful, loving, and kind.
He was brilliant in his portrayal of Samantha’s husband on the TV show bewitched. I had both of his lovely daughters in my class as their teacher when I was twenty-one at Colin McEwen high school in LA. 🙏~David Elan Peterson
...and yet, no one among his colleagues did anything to help this man. What about Elizabeth Montgomery? She had the money, the resources, the connections to help this man!...Did she? From what I've heard, Elizabeth Montgomery didn't like Dick York, she was happy to see him replaced. Regardless of the circumstances, I as a Christian wouldn't be able to sleep or swallow food knowing a colleague who is in dire need of help and turn the other way and ignore it. It goes to show you that there are people in the world, especially in Hollywood who couldn't care less, they are without any morals, integrity or character. Put yourself in Dick York shoes who needed help, but no one cared to help him, they couldn't care less... How could anyone in Hollywood who kew him allow this to happen? Not just him, but anyone? I feel awful about his wife and kids, like the Lord Jesus Christ said... "...do on to others as you want them to do on to you..." Luke 6:31. You want to know what is a pure, honorable, respectful, and a moral religion is? Here is the answer... "...pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted (staying away from immoral behavior, and unrighteousness ways) from the world” (James 1:27). Yes I first heard of his extreme pains on Entertainment Tonight at the time of his passing and I also heard on an episode of A&E Biography how Dick Sargent was originally up for the part of Darrin Stephens but was unavailable and so that's how Dick York got it first but then when he had to leave the role that's how Dick Sargent got it upon becoming available and why the show couldn't continue with saying Darrin was on vacation and not being true to the Witch Wife and Mortal Husband premise of The show.
It really is shameful and shocking that SAG only gave him $650 a month and nobody else from all of show business would toss him a bone in his miserable declining years! I'm 61 and still watching BeWitched..it was a great time in America. Last 15-20 yrs or more has been so depressing..America is so GONE. A darn near 3rd World Toilet bowl. That's why I watch nothing but Classic tv shows and movies. I want to go back in time my 85 yr old father grew up in. RIP Dad and Dick York. A Wonderful actor and Alizabeth Montgomery and her tv Mom.
We're happy to know that you love the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
Wow you said it though I was the only American with the notion this country is fast becoming third world. Like I always said it's not the land not the geographic location but rather the people. So moving here. Your just bringing that mentality. You know rude crude animalistic behavior.

@@frankschiavone4557 Agree with you 100%...the last three years in particular, America's "third world country status" seems to have accelerated at an astronomically fast pace...God help us!
Dick York was living with his wife in Michigan. I met him when he was a patient at the local hospital, just before he died.
I didn't know this. It breaks my heart. Thank you for making me smile watching Bewitched. I'm so sorry life was so cruel. I'll never forget your handsome smiling face. RIP Dick York. ❤
As a kid growing up in the 70s, he was one of my favorite actors!
Sad.
He needs to be remembered as a great actor.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
I loved watching the show Bewitched had no idea of Dicks struggles my condolences to his family may he rest in peace.
Wow, heartbreaking. I would have never known. He really was the right fit for Bewitched, one of my favorite shows
It’s so sad that people have no heart when it comes to helping someone they’ve know for that many years. Time will tell on those that are mean spirited. The old saying is so true “what goes around comes around”. They will have to face the man upstairs one day.😔
Used and abused.

Yea true some people are just greedy selfish as hell
Unfortunately, I don’t believe in that. Wish I could. All I ever observe in my life are bad people getting ahead and good people having bad things happen to them.
Yes, we all will reep what you sow
This just goes to show how Hollywood's compassion is only simulated for appearances.
Dick York was a huge fan favourite. His tragic story has saddened numerous fans ever😅ywhere.
Sad but true! Which episode of Bewitched appealed to you the most?
Loved bewitched and Dick York and still watch it. God rest his soul🙏
We're happy to know that you love the show and Dick. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
Dick York was a very sweet and intelligent man , it’s a dam shame he was kicked to the curb like that😢. I had no idea he was so ill . 🙏Rip 🙏 from one of your fans.😞
I always preferred Dick York over his replacement.
Fun stuff, thanks for sharing! May Dick find peace. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?

It breaks my heart to see the light gone from his eyes. He did so much but didn’t get the support he deserved. I hope his soul finds peace.
I never could understand why the people he worked with on the show Bewitched couldn't have helped him, it's obvious they all had money someone could have picked up and help that man I thought they were his friend
Reality,most people don't care,probably blamed his addiction

I was a child who loved the show Bewitched after school. I didn't know what happened to York and seeing this is heartbreaking.
So he never got royalties from Bewitched? I did know about the pain and addiction. But not the poverty.
@ga, read my comment.
and his salaies after years a hot star in Hollywood ?
Contracts were different back then, don't think he got royalties. My understanding is at the beginning of tv age they paid you for episode/season.
I did loved this series , the actors, the plot and everything in between. I am heartbroken about their tragic destiny.
@@JaniceGoen-po4rbyep the only Darrin for me too!
I wonder if she also felt "uncomfortable" when she started to have an affair with the Director. .
Wow, I had no idea of the pain he endured ❤️🕊️
I did not known that York did so much acting before Bewitch. What happened to he's family and friends or Elizabeth Montgomery? Dick Sargent never really took he's place in my mind. He was number one as Darin in Bewitch. RIP You was loved. ❤
Glad to know that you discovered something new about Bewitched. Which episode is the most memorable for you?
😢 rip. He brought me much joy as a kid. Sad.
Never knew all this. Just goes to show, you don't know what they are going through/ have been through. Be kind.
Thank you for this. Yeah it seems so many are producing misinformation especially after the person or persons who can refute it are gone. I see it all too often.
Ah, Allan, what a relief! Dick deserved the best. One thing I heard was that he was in love with Elizabeth and she wanted him out.
@@vaccavo I also heard that Elizabeth Montgomery was disgusted with Dick York for having an innocent crush on her.

Dick was a homeless advocate at the end of his life. I was running a homeless ministry out of a church at the time.
I live in Grand Rapids, only a few miles from Rockford. I remember his last interview with the local news. Very sad. RIP Dick York 🙏
Watched this show in Australia as a child absolutely loved viewing every night before dinner ,saddened to see how life for him turned out in his later years and so typical how Hollywood on the one hand make you a star and then disguard you at the drop of a hat when the going gets tough (shame ) T L
Those of us with chronic pain, I have severe fibromyalgia, understand his plight and can truly empathize with his sorrow. RIP Darron.
Sorry to hear of your chronic pain. I will keep you in my prayers tonight for strength and respite.
Darren
Rem that too!
I remember watching Bewitched as an 80s kid, Dick York was zany but funny as heck. I recall reading an interview he gave near the end when he was asked if he had any advice to us youngsters. He says, "reach for the light....a Bud light!" RIP Mr York
I knew “Joey” Joan for a few years before she passed away. She always spoke so highly of her Dicky and loved him so much.
I remember reading that he actually owned an apartment building in Michigan where he lived in one of units himself. However, he would refuse to evict people who could not afford to pay the rent. Ultimately, his generosity got him into trouble to where the building was foreclosed on and he was then evicted by the new owners.
The tenants in Dick York's apartment building took advantage of York's kindness.
@@harperstacey9604 kindness or stupidity? Renting apartments is a business and you'd better have the knowledge, ability readiness to do evictions or you will lose the business.
@@crand20033 it was both. Kindness and stupidity.

What year was this?
@@muziklvr7776 it was around 1990 or 1991. I was just in high school and my friend’s mother was a police officer and she befriended Dick through a safety check I believe. Then one day my friend asked if I wanted to meet him and I didn’t believe that he knew him.

How do you know that they did not help him out? Some people walk in silence.

My understanding from watching this is that he was Not homeless, he just did Not have a home of his own. And that he got royalties from Bewitched. He was a great actor and addiction is no joke but it does Not mean he wasn't a good person. Lot's of people struggle with pain and addiction. ...and yet, no one among his colleagues did anything to help this man. It really is shameful and shocking that SAG only gave him $650 a month and nobody else from all of show business would toss him a bone in his miserable declining years!
