The bespoke adult novelty industry is going to love this, and their client base are going to adore the layer lines. Jokes aside, this is an incredible accomplishment, great job build team, I can't wait to see how this grows and evolves over time.
don't forget the marijuana accessory industry. Had a conversation with a guy who ran a head shop who said he'd kill to have exactly this machine for printing silicone pipes and inserts.
Eh, layer lines are actually pretty awful for the adult novelty industry. Those small nooks and crannies are breeding grounds for bacteria. Same reason why FDM prints aren't food safe. Layer lines may feel good for hot minute, but the ensuing yeast infection will not.

@@benknrobbers tell him he can print pieces out of PETG. It is foodsafe and high temp. I printed a bubbler I designed. If I ever upload it I will put link here.
@@TheDeathskull37 petg in itself is food safe but the additives put in by filament manufacturers are not, and the layer lines are impossible to completely clean between

I’m guessing the headline is to get views because this is not the first desktop silicone 3D printer I’ve seen. I’ve seen and spoken to a gentleman at several Rapid TCT 3D printing shows that had a nice little machine making medical grade parts. The silicone was LSR grade material. He was purchased by a bigger company (German company IIRC). This machine is using 2-component systems which looks pretty tricky as he explains, so kudos for getting a working prototype. 👍🏼

I used to work on what's called a PolyJet machine. it drove me absolutely crazy because the parts were always rubber and super cool, but thats if there wasnt a mis mix or layer shift super hard.
If we could get these layers even smaller and increase definition, I bet this will be the tech that puts that older one to bed. Hella cool machine.
I think the PolyJet tech is the future for functional prints. It won't happen until StrataSys's patent expires though.
Well, you already can get good definition with regular printers designed to print soft TPU, so unless there is something you specifically need silicone for …

This is a beautiful machine! I'd love to see this tech put onto another system with hot-swappable carriages, like the upcoming Prusa XL for example. it would go so well with soluble supports.

You have to redesign the octopus to have air channels in the tentacles, and connected to 8 syringes long tubes, the can puppeteer the octopus with a team of puppeteers...
A lot of work put that would look really cool...
Hmm you'll need to use some muscle/tendon tech so the physicals can actually grab objects, like the hot wire that can shrink, or servos...
Printing silicone is gonna change 3D printing! You can do soft and hard prints, it's chemically and thermally stable, it's incredibly tough. Can't wait to have a silicone printer!
Hmmm. I think i would still just print a mold with regular fff and then you can cast any material you like.

While it would add cost and complexity, an IDEX version with an FFF tool to print supports would allow for more complex structures. I presume any meaningful bridging is out of the question with this process, so removeable supports would open up a lot of otherwise inaccessible forms.
I think it would be even better to (also?) sell this as a kit without a printer:
Just an external "extruder" box (including the compressor and related electronics), and the "hotend" part -- and allow consumers to install this on existing machines as if it were any other bowden extruder + hotend.
This would be an awesome toolchanger part for an E3D toolchanger machine or a Prusa XL.
Especially with soluble materials

what a cool machine! About 90% of the parts I design for 3d printing are molds for casting complex silicone parts. i think that I have a hard time imagining of how I would use a machine like this, personally. Many of the demo parts here could be made easily, and with considerably more accuracy, with molds printed in PLA. I don't want to dunk on the machine though, that's some fantastic engineering here.
I feel these things will only improve however, keep in mind these are still early stages of design. I see your point tho, I think bringing down the time to finish a silicone piece is what’s also being done here, so rapid prototyping that can’t be achieved as easily or quickly with more “traditional” molds. 😊
@@TheHadi545 Oh for sure. I can imagine doing all sorts of intriguing things with infill patterns in silicone with a printer, or even embedding other materials into the silicone, or having control over the blend to control softness of the part in a very sophisticated way. Silicone is such a remarkable material. For rapid prototyping though, I can print a 2 or 3 part mold for that octopus object in PLA in a few hours that I can then cast silicone into by the end of the day. It does require some knowledge of mold design and familiarity with silicone mixing, but it ends up being a very quick thing to do when you know those things. Example: someone posted an anatomical model of a body organ on reddit a few months ago and I made a silicone copy of it by the next day. I don't think the 3-part mold design I did took any more than 30 minutes and i'm no expert/professional, just a rando making stuff in my spare time.
I had another thought about this. It occurs to me that you can go the other direction with this material to do a 3d printer. Silicone can be rendered liquid, to be painted as with an airbrush. It should be possible to print silicone using a technology that does spray depositing to get extreme detail, like in a polyjet printer. You could surely print highly detailed medical parts this way. I've never heard of this being done before, maybe someone will put the time in to develop it more fully.
@@davib8963 very cool, love the ideas of using such a printer. Infill composition mix and layout etc.. I got some silicon mold to try out, but it does not come very cheap. What material would you pour most? Whats interesting?
@@TheHadi545 material for casting into silicone molds, so many things to try. many, many interesting polyurethane resins, foams, plaster cements.

Iy never fails to amazing what we keep comming up with and getting out there. So much of this stuff, even today, is seen as magic by soooo many people that don't even know we dose so much commanly now that was just a dream a few years ago.

That seems like a ton of research jobs done! But in terms of comercializing, looks like there is still a long way ahead. We actually got a local manufacturer here in Taiwan that sells medical grade silicone 3D printers (that;s what they claim). It's called San Draw.

I've been wanting to be able to print with silicone, either directly producing silicone moulds or printing dog toys. I wonder if you could create a hollow interior by using an inflated latex balloon as support structure.
Similar to my 3d bioprinter Iam developing in my PhD study. Cool! Shame we didn't get to see the mixing toolhead (active or passive?) Since I need a passive mixing tool head for mixing colagen with stem cells and medium.

Really curious what that custom PCB does for the pumps. I would expect klipper with an octopus to run pretty much anything you'd want, without the need for anything custom. Maybe a MOSFET
Some day they will combine all this stuff and we'll have printers printing literally anything, no matter what variety of materials they are made out of. Like in sci fi movies when they print like a gun, or a meal, or anything regardless of material. That's going to be a long ways out though and likely require several material cartridges and several various extruders in each machine.

Would fiber-filled phenolic resins work in your printer?
Are you gonna be printing 'Bakelite' next?
Novolac epoxies, alkali activated inorganic zeolites, eutectic alloys, amalgams, ceramics, glass.
Some of the parts are gonna print 'green' and might need post-processing or kiln-time, but printing really durable parts would be nice.
'Active chemistry' in the Hot-end is gonna re-shape how we think about printing.

I can see a silicone printer excel for reproducing automotive seals for out of production cars. Used ones in good condition for some models are hundreds of dollars each.

Joel you must have a look at Proper Printing he recently made a working FFF resin printer... and I mean FFF style printing with resin using 2 lasers to cure the resin as you print from it.. Still not perfect but he is getting pretty close with it.
would love to see a SLA version of this, maybe using a novel targeted heating matrix, using hixels (heat pixels) patent pending.

I have build my own custom made 3D concrete/mortar printer from Ender3 and custom made printhead. Also created proper mortar for that.

🤔 Not sure if this is really the world's first desktop silicone printer.
AFAIK there is an Inkjet 3D printer by Keyence that prints silicone too. It's called Agilista. But I don't know when it was released.
Your partially right, the one made by Keyence only prints silicone of around 80% silicone in the material, with additives to make it cure in UV light. So its not quite silicone and with a huge different in mechanical properties as well.
There are some RTV silicone printers out there and from Innovatiq a injection molding grade silicone printer.
If I'm being honest while this is pretty cool tech it doesn't feel like dealing with all those complications is worth it compared to creating a mould for casting on a normal printer, which lets you eliminate layer lines with some effort and also produce multiple parts. But maybe I'm wrong, I'm not a silicone expert.

If they can successfully get pliable soft silicone to print, all the "adult toy" makers are instantly out of business.
